Olivia looked at him in surprise.
This was the first time that he had spoken to her since they had left Green Gables.
And it was not what she had expected him to say.
He was obviously waiting for an answer and after a moment she managed to say in a very low voice,
“You – know I wish you – happiness.”
“It is a very big thing to desire,” the Earl commented.
Olivia drank a little of her champagne, thinking that it would give her courage.
“You have – so much – to make you happy,” she said.
“I presume by that you mean material possessions,” he answered.
Again it was something that Olivia had not expected him to say.
Because she felt so nervous, she put her glass down on one of the side tables.
She walked to the window and outside the garden in the sunshine was breathtaking.
