Prologue
Valerie's POV
"Here is a million dollars. Get out of my bed and pay for your mother's hospital. That was the only reason you wanted to marry my son. You wanted money for your sick mother. Please forget about Oliver. He's anyway not in love with you. He is in love with someone else and only pitied you." Dean Stark said as he looked at me disgustingly. I know I deserve it. He threw a card with a pin at me. It was not the only humiliation I went through that day.
Oliver and I were high school sweethearts. I thought Oliver loved me. However, I was wrong. He used me to make Belinda Sutherland jealous. I worked as a server in a local restaurant and looked after my sick mother. When I got home, I went to the hospital to go and see my mother. The doctor told me that the hospital could no longer keep my mother there as she needed an operation that would cost around one million dollars. I felt heartbroken as I did not have that kind of money.
Hannah Stark never liked me, and she smiled wickedly when she told me Oliver was not home as he spent the night at Belinda's apartment. I wanted him to help me. After all, the hospital did belong to his family, and I wanted him to help me arrange to pay them off and for them to keep my mother there. However, hearing that he was with Belinda hurt my heart.
Oliver is not very attractive, unlike his father, but I love him. I thought Oliver was a good person. The only thing appealing about Oliver was his money. Belinda, the only daughter of the Sutherland family, was spoiled as her parents were wealthy, but her father was on the verge of losing his business. Poor business decisions and even worse business deals had the Sutherland family on the knees. We met at school. I was very clever and got a bursary from one of the best schools in town. We had a lot in common: We were all clever and came from broken houses, as Oliver, Belinda, and my parents were divorced. However, I was never invited to their homes, and they never visited me at my house in the poorer part of town.
Still, I went to Belinda's apartment to see if Hannah Stark was telling the truth. Belinda, dressed in only a rope, opened the door as I knocked on the door.
"Oliver, honey, your pitiful girlfriend is here. I bet she is here to beg for money to save her mommy's life!" Belinda said catty.
"Tell her to go away. We are done! I am with the woman I love and no longer need her." Oliver shouted from the bathroom. I wanted to beg him to help me, but Belinda laughed and closed the door.
I was desperate. I wanted to save my mother. I knew Dean Stark was in town, and I had no option but to ask him for help. I would beg him or do anything for him to keep my mother alive. I also know he was in town because Oliver's mother called him, afraid that Oliver would marry me out of pity. Heartbroken and with no other options to save my mother's life, I went to see Dean Stark. I knew he would see me because he wanted to get rid of me. Belinda was sleeping with Oliver to save her father's business. She needed help and did not care who she was sleeping with to get help for her family. Of course, Dean would help them because it was what Hannah Stark and Oliver wanted.
Dean Stark is not a man who sleeps around. However, I was desperate and offered him my virginity to pay for my mother's hospital.
At first, he did not want to and offered me the money to leave Oliver alone. However, I insisted on sleeping with him because I did not want his money for free. All I had was my body. I was desperate and willing to do anything, so I sold my virginity to him. However, when I got to the hospital, it was too late. My mother has died.
At her funeral, I promised to make the Shark family pay. I had a million dollars. However, I no longer wanted the money, so I returned the card to Dean Stark. That was seven years ago. I inherited a bunch of money from my estranged father when he died. I did not know him, but he had no one else to leave his money to. He had no children or any other family. He has been in Africa since he left my mother and me. He was wealthy and owned many shares in gold mines all over Africa.
Today, I am the biggest competitor to the Stark family. Bell Enterprises is Dean Stark's only competition, and I am busy overtaking him. Men like to do business with a young, dynamic woman like me, and I am not afraid to use my female trump card to get ahead of him. I have taken away most of his government contracts for building.
Yes, I am in the construction business as Dean Stark, and I don't only build buildings. I also designed them as I got my architecture degree with my father's money this year. They are all going to pay for what they did to me seven years ago. Of course, I did not fire the architecture that helped me through the years. I am now one of their team.
I am back in my hometown, Los Angeles. Dean Stark has moved his head offices here because he worries about his new competition. I used my mother's maiden name, Bell, as I did not want them to know who I was and did not want to use Morris. I am now known as Valerie Bell.
"Mommy, I am hungry." Dean, my six-year-old son, says behind me.
Yes, I called him after his father, Dean Shark. I love him, and unlike Oliver, little Dean takes after his father. He is a handsome little boy. When he was born, I thought about using him to get even more revenge on his father, but my little boy stole my heart, and I would do anything to protect him against the Stark Family.
I ordered us pizza and smiled at him. My revenge starts today. I waited seven years to get my revenge plan in order. I can wait a few more minutes to eat with my little prince.
