Later that evening, the tranquility of Sadie’s new life is abruptly shattered by an unexpected visitor. The doorbell rings, and when Sadie opens the door, she is stunned to see Jake standing there. Overwhelmed with fear, she quickly closes the door and retreats to her room, desperately trying to calm her racing heart.
Her grandma, noticing the commotion, answers the door and, despite her initial reluctance, invites Jake inside. Sadie, hidden in her room, overhears their conversation. She is unnerved as she listens to them speak as if they are old acquaintances, her anxiety mounting with every word.
The tension escalates when Jake enters Sadie’s room unannounced. Startled and alarmed, Sadie demands, “Who let you in here?” Jake, exuding an air of dominance, sits on her bed and casually produces a new phone, placing it in front of her.
As Sadie stares at the phone, conflicted about whether to accept it, Jake coldly says, “I don’t want to hurt you, so stop trying to hurt yourself and be mine.” Anger flares within Sadie. She rejects the phone with disgust, telling Jake, “I don’t want anything from you. Get out of my room and stay out of my life!”
Jake’s demeanor shifts as he stands up, seizing Sadie’s chin with a firm grip. His eyes lock onto hers, and he menaces, “You came here to start a new life, but I could ruin it instantly. Remember your imprisoned father and your mother’s failed business. All it takes is one word from me.”
Trembling, Sadie asks, “How do you know all this?” Jake smirks, his grip tightening. “You think your dad is innocent, don’t you?” he taunts, laughing. He drops the phone onto her bed with a dismissive gesture. “It’s all yours,” he says, his voice dripping with cruelty, before leaving her room with a demeaning aura and his laughter echoing as he exits.
Sadie is left in a state of fear and confusion, staring at the phone and grappling with the implications of Jake’s threats. Her grandma, noticing Sadie’s distress, enters the room. With a stern expression, she advises, “Sadie, you need to be careful. Don’t anger Jake. He has his ways, and you wouldn’t want to push him too far. Just do as he says.”
A wave of betrayal washes over Sadie. The realization that her grandma might be siding with Jake or at least acquiescing to his demands leaves her heart sinking. She masks her true feelings, feigning agreement. “Okay, Grandma. I understand,” she says with a forced smile, hiding her inner turmoil.
Later that night, as Sadie lies in bed unable to sleep, Jake’s chilling words replay in her mind. The doubts about her father’s innocence and the secrets possibly hidden from her gnaw at her. Her thoughts race as she considers whether her father was truly innocent or if there were truths she had been kept from knowing.
Sadie’s fear of Jake’s power and her confusion about his intentions weigh heavily on her. She becomes increasingly curious about who Jake really is and what other secrets he might be hiding about her family. In the darkness, she reflects on what she knows and pieces together the fragments of her life and Jake’s threats.
Determined to uncover the truth, Sadie resolves to confront the reality of her father’s past and Jake’s motives. Despite her fear and uncertainty, she is driven by a need to understand her situation better and seek answers.
