Chapter 5: The wallet is mine

642 Words
The next morning, Sadie carefully packed the wallet and ID card into her bag, planning to turn them in at the local police station. On the way, she decided to stop at a new café, hoping the coffee would help clear her mind and provide a brief escape from her troubles. Inside the bustling café, Sadie found a seat by the window and began sipping her coffee. The café was filled with the clatter of dishes and the hum of conversation when a young man burst through the door, scanning the room with visible urgency. He held a flyer with a picture of the wallet, causing Sadie’s heart to race. Could this be the owner? Summoning her courage, Sadie approached him. “Excuse me, I think I might have something that belongs to you,” she said, holding out the wallet. The young man, introducing himself as Jake, took the wallet and examined it. His face, initially relieved, soon displayed a hint of disdain. “I’m Jake,” he said with a cold tone. “Thank you for returning it, but you need to explain how it ended up in your bag.” Sadie was taken aback. “I don’t know how it got there. I found it in my bag yesterday.” Jake’s expression hardened. “I find that difficult to believe. I’m going to have to involve the authorities.” Before Sadie could protest, Jake made a call. Within minutes, police arrived at the café. Despite Sadie’s attempts to explain and defend herself, Jake’s authoritative demeanor and considerable influence ensured that her claims were dismissed. He insisted she was involved in theft, leading to her being questioned and briefly detained. As Sadie sat in the holding cell, a deep sense of betrayal and helplessness washed over her. The realization that Jake’s wealth and power had skewed the situation against her was overwhelming. The cell felt cold and unforgiving, a stark contrast to the warmth of the café just hours before. Later that evening, Serena arrived at the station, having heard about Sadie’s plight. She quickly began discussing the situation with the police, presenting evidence that proved Sadie’s innocence. Serena’s persistence and the evidence she provided managed to convince the authorities to release Sadie. The police, after further investigation, acknowledged that the theft charges were baseless. Once freed, Serena offered a comforting presence as they left the station. “I’m so sorry this happened. Jake’s wealth and arrogance gave him too much power, and he used it to manipulate the situation.” Sadie’s anger flared with a new intensity. “I can’t believe it. Jake is the same person who posted that humiliating video of me. He’s been actively trying to ruin my life.” Serena’s eyes narrowed with determination. “We can’t let him get away with this. He needs to face consequences for his actions. We should find a way to make him understand the impact of his cruelty.” Sadie’s face brightened with resolve. “What if we make his life as uncomfortable as he made mine? We could start by targeting his reputation and making him feel the same kind of embarrassment and frustration he inflicted on me.” The two friends began to strategize their revenge, discussing various ways to disrupt Jake’s social standing and personal life. They considered tactics like exposing his flaws to his peers, creating situations that would embarrass him publicly, and using their knowledge of his habits and connections to their advantage. They were careful to avoid any actions that could lead to legal trouble but were determined to make Jake regret his actions. As they plotted, Sadie felt a renewed sense of empowerment. The betrayal had ignited a fire within her, and with Serena’s support, she was prepared to reclaim control over her life and seek justice on her own term.
