One Of Them
Hanna
Checking in the hotel was simple as always, Lucy and I shared a room together as it was only for a day. The room was alright, clean and tidy like I expected it to be. However, the view from the glass window was frightening and scary. The room they had given us was on the fifteenth floor. I could see the entire town from up here.
There weren't many buildings in Baskerville, only a couple of them. Most of the ground was covered in houses and small shops. The street was packed with people even thought it was the middle of the night. The weather and the time didn't affect the people of Baskerville.
"I'm going to change and sleep," Lucy said as she walked into the washroom.
"Alright, I'm just going to head down to the lobby and check out this place." I said with curiosity lacing in my tone.
Lucy raised her eyebrow and glared at me, "Are you sure you want to go alone? I would've come along with you but I feel sleepy and it's pretty late."
"No, it's alright!" I exclaimed before grabbing my handbag. "It will be just a couple minutes and I'll be back. It might be late but the entire town is awake so I'll be fine." My lips curved into a smile as I walked out of the room.
I closed the wooden door behind me and fixed my clothing. Wrapping the scarf tightly around my neck, I hoped onto the elevator and headed down to the lobby.
The reflection in the mirror exposed me. The flush on my cheekbones was like the flush of sunset on snow. My dark hair was messed up, slightly tangled and curled. My hazel eyes were wide-awake, the eye bags said otherwise though.
Once the elevator stopped, I walked out and noticed the hotel lobby. It was fancy like every other hotel.
The town was old, cars were rushing by in the mist of night, people were shoveling the snow off from the ground, the fire was crackling and the smoke of cigar and tobacco being burned could be smelled from a distance. My nose scrunched at the scent of cigarettes — that was disgusting.
Every muscle in my body was tensed with what all I was going to come across. I wasn't terrified, or scared — maybe a little bit, but moreover, I was curious and eager to find out the truth.
Stepping away from the streets, I entered a supermarket right beside the hotel. A strange tingling sensation gripped my body as I surveyed the supermarket. The lights of the supermarket were flickering. There weren't many people inside, just a couple of them filling up their baskets and going back home quietly. My eyebrows rose in amusement as I saw no woman around the entire town — or at least the path from where I was coming. I still hadn't noticed one.
I picked up a candy bar and a bottle of beer before heading towards the cashier. The old man gave me a strange look before checking the items.
"Not really common to see a woman around here; especially at this time of the night." The old man murmured under his breath. My lips parted in surprise.
"Why is that?" I asked, my eyebrow arched in confusion.
"Rules, love, women aren't allowed to leave after sunset." He replied.
"Oh," I whispered with surprise. "Really? Who made that rule?"
The man blinked, "You are new here?" He asked.
"Yes, I'm just here for a day, looking for someone." I replied.
There was no one waiting behind me so I decided to chat a bit longer with the old man. Maybe he knew something.
"And who's that?" He asked while raising an eyebrow.
"Why would I tell who I'm looking for?"
"We all know each other so I might know whoever you're looking for," he replied.
"Master, people call him that, I'm unsure of his real name but I guess its...Angelo." I said.
The old man in front of me froze. His eyes were icy and unresponsive. I looked around my surroundings to make sure there wasn't anything unusual around me.
"How do you know him?" The man asked after a moment of silence.
I licked my dry lips before replying, "I just know..." this man knew him. "Do you know who he is? Where is he? What he does? Where he lives?" I bombarded the old man with questions.
The man quickly placed my items inside a bag and handed them over to me. "Would you like me to inform the Master that you're looking for him?" He asked.
"No!" I exclaimed. That was the last thing I wanted to happen. "I just wanted to know about him but never mind, thank you for your time." I quickly rushed away from the supermarket.
The Master did exist. I was kidnapped. I didn't need any other proof. My parents were lying and I was sure of that. Without interacting with anyone else, I went inside my hotel and back into my room.
Lucy was deep asleep by the time I reached my room. I let her sleep in peace while I drank my beer. It was after so long. My parent forbade me from drinking anything alcoholic but I couldn't stop myself from tasting beer. It wasn't everyday, just occasionally, whenever I was too worried or paranoid — which I was now.
The time passed by quickly. The sun came up in a few hours and the moon vanished away into the bright sky.
I was able to get a few hours of sleep but that was all. Lucy woke up as well and we both freshened ourselves before leaving for breakfast.
"So, tell me what happened last night?" She asked.
"I went to the supermarket nearby and there was this old man. Out of curiosity, I asked him about the man named Master and he froze — like literally. He asked what I had to do with him and he was willing to let the Master know that I was looking for him." I explained.
"Who's the master?" Lucy asked.
"The one who kidnapped me, people called him the Master. He was the one who told me that my Dad killed his sister." I explained once again.
"Oh," Lucy nodded her head while remembering our conversation earlier. "I know someone, Felix, he works around here. Let me give him a call to meet us up here and we can ask him about the Master. If people know about him, then he'd too." She added as she picked up her cellphone.
A couple clicks after, she received a notification from the man named Felix. "Great!" She exclaimed with excitement. "He'll come in an hour,"
"Really?" I bursted out.
"Yes, now all your theories and beliefs can come to a rest."
While we waited for him, we ordered breakfast and coffee by a cafe inside the hotel. The hotel lobby was packed with people checking in and checking out.
The pancakes that were served to us were delicious and mouth-watering.
"Did you drank beer last night? I found a couple cans in the trash." Lucy asked while eating her breakfast.
I swallowed the thick chunk of food down my throat before replying. "Yes, I was stressed out."
"Oh, okay!"
After a minute or so, a man in a white coat approached us. "Lucy?" He narrowed his eyes down at her. She immediately got up and hugged him.
"It's been so long, how are you? How's everything?" She asked.
"I'm doing great, thank you. Why are you here though?" The man named Felix asked.
"For my friend, she wanted to know a few things and you're the only person who we know in this town." Lucy said.
Felix grabbed a seat and sat down beside us. After a small introduction, Felix came to the point.
"So, what's this all about?" He asked.
His ruggedly handsome face was was vaguely familiar. He had thick black hair that glistened under the streaks of sunlight. He had a wild-shouldered, rangy body.
"This is my friend, Hanna, we used to study together." Lucy said while pointing her hands on me.
"Nice to meet you," I said with a smile.
"You too,"
"She has some questions. Do you have idea about a man named Master or at least that's what his people call him." Lucy asked.
And just like yesterday, the man in front of me froze but he was able to snap out of it quickly. His curved lips lined straight as he glared at me.
"Yes, I do know. Why are you asking?" He asked me, ignoring Lucy's presence.
"Who is he?" I asked.
"He's the Master," he answered with an impersonal nod. "Baskerville is his hometown. He doesn't resides here though. He lives in Venice, Italy but often visits here. Why are you asking again? Have you had an encounter with him?"
"I was kidnapped a couple weeks ago," I stated. My eyes dashed across the room before I continued. "The men that kidnapped me were familiar, my Dad knew them. That's when I met the Master. I was kept in a warehouse around here for days and then returned back to my home. When I woke up, my parents denied that I was kidnapped."
"You're mistaken. The Master doesn't kidnaps women or girls," Felix stated.
I couldn't be mistaken.
"I'm not wrong, he did hold me inside that warehouse for days." I said.
Felix turned around to Lucy and got up. "You have been mistaken, it's probably someone else."
I grabbed his wrist and stopped him, "I know he did, you know it too."
He bent his head slightly forward and said, "I told you, the Master doesn't harm women."
"But he did..." I trailed off.
"Then it must have been someone else. I'm sorry, I can't help you in this." He said.
I raised my chin and gave a cold stare at his direction.
"His name is Angelo,"
