First Day Jitters

2901 Words
Abigail's POV My weekend was a fabulous one. Linda took me out dancing on Saturday night and I had tons of fun, it had been years since I drank like that. I had a lot to be grateful for and frankly I was celebrating a new job Opportunity. I mean a lot of people might not understand this but this was a huge deal for me. I am not even sure why they hired me but I was glad that they did. I suppose my record speaks for itself. I haven't lost a case in years and that's a big deal in my field. I really thought that criminal law was the way for me but after spending a year working for the government and another two years working in the DA's office, I was done with it. I decided to change fields the day I walked into the DA' office and found a box load of files waiting for me. It was a huge deal for me because I thought then that I had stepped up but I soon learned that I had switched one crappy job for another, so I decided to study while I was working. I then studied commercial law and even though I did great at that, I still didn't have any experience in that field. Linda was more than willing to talk to her father so that he can hire me at his company but I didn't want any hand outs. I don't think I would have liked working for her father anyways. Despite the fact that he has known me for years and the fact that I'm his daughter's best friend, he still hits on me. I probably would have filed for s****l harrassment on the first day. Mama was so happy that she even cried on the phone. She has been my pillar for so long, the last thing she wanted was for me to turn out like her so she did all she can to make sure that I get myself a good education, one that would afford me a better life. It's funny that I now live in the same city as my grandparents and I have never met them. Mama said that they didn't want us and for a long time I didn't understand why. I mean they where her family. She then told me that they kicked her out because she fell pregnant with me. This means that they know about me and that they have never bothered themselves to look for me. I see how sad Mama gets everytime she sees them on the papers or on the TV. My grandmother runs several charities. At the top of that is the charity for teenage mothers and babies, isn't it ironic that she extend that same charity, love and support she gives to strangers to her own daughter and granddaughter? I wonder what they would say if they saw us now. After I had to grow up quickly as well, I realised that my mother sacrificed a lot to be with me. If she had given me up like they wanted then she would be with her family right now. She wouldn't be living in that old house. I mean she might have been a doctor like she wanted. She sacrificed her dreams so that I live mine, nothing is going to trump that. My father is a totally different issue all together. He left my mother when she was pregnant with me and has never bothered to look for me. If there's one thing I liked about working at the DA's office was the information I could get so I looked for him, I didn't tell my mother because I didn't know how she was going to feel about it. That man broke her heart and I fear that she hasn't healed. No one knows that pain more than me. Greyson just ghosted me. He left me with a promise that we will keep in touch, that our relationship wouldn't change just because we weren't in the same university anymore. To be honest, I didn't plan to fall in love with him. I mean he was my first crush, my first boyfriend and my first everything after that. I didn't even see us going that far, at best I thought that it would just be a fling that would end soon. I thought that he would soon get bored and find someone else but he didn't, he didn't treat me like the other girls he had dated. He actually made me fall in love with him and then he just left me like I was nothing. I knew then that Mama was right that men were evil but that didn't stop me from finding a new boyfriend all thanks to Linda. It had been a couple of years after our breakup and Linda set me up with a guy she knew. We dated for a few months, he was a great guy and he was sweet and romantic, I really wanted to love him, I tried so hard but it didn't happen, I knew that I had to break up with him because leading him on was unfair to the both of us. I was denying him the time to find the right woman, a woman who would be able to give him back the love he was giving to me. Linda was disappointed but she understood why I had to do it. I wouldn't have been happy with him. Then about a year ago I met another guy. He too was great and unlike Theodore, I actually liked this one, too bad that he had to move to Italy on a promotion. He asked me to come with him but I couldn't, I had my own career to think of. We still talk and he still hasn't found anyone just yet. I have an open invitation to visit his new place, I just need to find the right time to do it. I guess I am unlucky in relationships and that's why I have decided that I want to be single and focus on my career. Which is why I woke up early this morning. I don't want to be late on my first day. Yesterday I woke up with a hangover so I spent the better of Sunday in bed getting some rest. I went to my closet and took out a baby blue suit and a white shirt. I took out my black Jimmy Choo stilettos and a white lace bra and matching thongs. I have been dying to wear this suit ever since Linda gave it to me as a gift. She calls it a "boss suit." I took a quick shower, I got dressed and I put on a bit of makeup. I tried my hair into a neat bun. I went to the mirror and took a look at myself. I was impressed. The shirt was tucked in and the jacket was open, the pants were wide and hugging me on my curves. I guess Linda was right, this was really a boss suit, perfect for that huge office I will be getting. I am so excited I could cry. I took a deep breathe and went into my living room. I took the signed contract and put it in my bag. I took my laptop, my car keys and left my apartment. I walked to the lift with my head held high. When I got in the lift I found Tristan. He was our very own hunk in our apartment building and a very good friend of mine, I mean he was handsome, and rich, I know that he is rich because he owns the whole top floor, that's his apartment. He has his own private lift, which makes me wonder why he like to use this one. "Good morning..." I said with a smile as I got in the lift. "Good morning, how are you doing today?" he asked me. "Great, you?" I asked him. "I am okay, you look different today, new hairstyle?" he asked me. "Not really..." I said. "Whatever it is, you look great." he said. "Must be the suit." I said. "Yes the suit is nice but that's not it, you have a certain glow." he said. "Hmmm." I said. "going to get coffee?" he asked me. "Yes, you?" I asked him. "You know I can't start my day without it..." he said. This is true. The reason that we are talking like we are friends is because we are kind of best friends, we met at the coffee shop downstairs when I first moved here. He was late and I was at the front of the line. He asked me to buy coffee for him and that's how we started talking, we are now more than coffee buddies. I heard that there's a rumour that we are a thing but I would never date Tristan. He is a player. He has told me about the many women he has dated. He said that he didn't believe in commitment and monogamy doesn't make sense to him. He is definitely not the serious relationship kind of guy. The lift got us to the ground floor and we walked to the coffee shop together. I took a seat and he went to get us coffee. He came back a few minutes late and gave me my coffee. "Well Tristan, you know I enjoy our morning chats but I have to run." I said. "Run? Abigail you are like an hour earlier than your usual time, I think we can talk for a few minutes, I need advice on something." He said. "No can't do, I don't want to be late on my first day on the job." I said. "You have a new job?" he asked me with a surprised face. "Yes I do, I have to run." I said. "Fine but you are coming over for dinner tonight, no debate, you have a new job and we have to celebrate." He said. "Fine then, I'll see you later." I said as I walked out the door. I got myself a cab and I was on my way to work. I would have taken my car but I was afraid that it would stick out like a sore thumb. I am sure that everyone will notice my old car. I got there very early. There was a few cars parked outside. The building looked taller than the last time I saw it. I took a deep breathe and I walked into the building like the confident lawyer that I was. Unlike the last time I got here, this there was two young ladies at the reception. I walked to them confidently and I let myself known who I was. I mean this was now my place of work, I had to familiarise myself with the staff. "Oh I am glad to meet you, my name is Leah, I am your new PA, come let me show you to your office. Oh I'll take this. " She said as she took my purse and laptop bag. I knew I was getting a position but a PA? Wow! These people don't mess around, this means that I will be kept on my toes, I have to bring in my A game all the time. I guess I'm finally swimming with the big fish. "Oh I am going to need your cellphone so that I can sync in your diary... is there any specific dates that should be set aside, I mean things like birthdays, anniversaries, wedding and so forth..." She continued talking. I have never heard someone talk this much. "Leah, I need you to slow down okay, relax and take a breather, you are all over the place." I said. "I'm sorry Mrs Brown, I am or rather I was the office runner, this job is a promotion and I don't want to mess up on the first day." she said sounding like she was about to faint. " Miss Brown... Leah you need to do one thing at a time, I'll give you my phone when we get to the office right now I need you to calm okay?" I said and she nodded her head. " Good girl." I said. The lift stopped and we got out, this was not the floor I was in the last time but it looked great. There wasn't a lot of people, I suppose because it was still early. "This is your office... Mr Jones said that you can change the furniture if you please... " Leah said as we got in. I don't think I wanted to change anything in here. The office was big, it had a huge glass wall that gave me a beautiful view of the city. The furniture was also beautiful. There was a glass office desk and two chairs. Then there was a four seater white leather couch with red cushions. There was another glass table, this time a smaller one. Then there was a book shelf and a door next to it. "What's behind that door? " I asked her. "Oh that's your private bathroom, you have got the best office on this floor." she said with a smile. "I certainly do..." I said with a smile. "Now before we start with anything, Is Mr Jones in his office? " I asked her. "He is always here, him and his business partner, I think that they're vampires." She said and we both laughed. Leah has a great sense of humour, I am going to love working here. I went into my laptop bag and I took out my contract. I gave it to Leah. "First order of business, I need you to take this to Mr Jones." I said. "Right on it." She said. " Oh and I am going to need you to get some coffee." I said. "How do you like your coffee?" she asked. "Well an Expresso would be nice..." I said. "Good thing we have a Starbucks coffee shop in the building." she said. "We do?" I asked her with a surprised face. "Yes, there's a whole floor with just different restaurants." She said. "Alright then..." I said as she left. This was absolutely different than what I was used to. I now know why every lawyer wants to work at this place. I mean they have a freakin Starbucks coffee shop in the building. I wonder what else they have. I walked around the new office, I went to the bathroom to check it out and I was impressed. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be in an office like this someday. I am so happy I could cry. "Hello... Miss Brown." A male voice called out, I went out of the bathroom and closed the door. "Yes that's me..." I said. "Well this is for you, I need you to sign for it." He said and put the box he had on the table. "Okay..." I said and signed for the box. I opened it and inside I found a note and a lot of gifts. I was getting a new Apple iPhone, a new MacBook Pro, a new Apple laptop and car Keys, they had a Mercedes Benz logo. Leah came back but she was not alone, she had Mr Jones with him. "Oh I see that you have received our welcome gifts." Mr Jones said. "Expensive Welcome gifts, I feel very welcomed thank you." I said with a smile. "Don't thank me yet, wait until you have pulled an all nighter on the job." He said and we both laughed. "Well I wanted to be the first to welcome you to the company, you will meet some of the staff later on and in the end of two weeks you will meet the rest of the board at the our monthly meeting." He said "Looking forward to it." I said with a smile. "Okay, first order of business is this..." He said and gave me a file. "Mrs Clayton has been with us for a few years now, she owns a chain of restaurants, she is currently being sued for a slip and fall. One of her customers claims that she fell in the bathroom and broke her leg, She's suing for half a million dollars. We cannot afford to lose this case, you will meet her tomorrow, I wanted you to get a head start, there's a box in my office with everything you will need to know about the client, I will also send you an email about the history of the restaurant in question." He said. "Thank you, I'll be on it right away." I said. "great, ladies if you'll excuse me, I have to run, I have an early meeting with a friend, see you later." He said and exited my office. I get to work on my first day and I couldn't be more happier about it. I am one step closer to fulfilling my dreams. The Lord has been good to me. "Leah would you please go and get that box for me, I want to get started." I said and took a seat. "Right on it, your Expresso is on it's way..." she said.
