Chapter 5

Zena's POV Emotions churned within me as I stood before the captured right hand of El Fuego. The sight of Mr. Lopez stirred a whirlwind of conflicting feelings—relief, anticipation, and a lingering sense of apprehension. It was a victory, undeniably, to have him in our custody, yet beneath the surface lay the sobering recognition that our journey was far from over. Happiness teased at the edges of my consciousness, an unattainable shade, overshadowed by the harsh reality that success in our line of work was often fleeting, a mere respite in the ceaseless battle against crime and corruption. Ceila's inquiry pierced through the heavy atmosphere of the interrogation room, her voice a stark contrast to the silence that enveloped us. "Boss, what's the plan? How do we extract information from him now?" "It's late. Let him spend the night in holding. Tomorrow, we'll have a little chat with Mr. López here," I replied, my tone betraying none of the turmoil swirling within. Stepping out of the interrogation room, a weight seemed to lift from my shoulders, but it was only momentarily. Could this be the breakthrough we had been waiting for, the key to dismantling El Fuego's criminal empire once and for all? Hope flickered within me, a fragile beacon amidst the darkness that threatened to consume us all. The journey back to my office was a blur, my thoughts consumed by the task that lay ahead. Packing my belongings with a sense of purpose, I couldn't shake the feeling of foreboding that lingered at the edge of my consciousness. Tomorrow's interrogation loomed large in my mind, a daunting reminder of the challenges that awaited us. Retreating to the sanctuary of my apartment, weariness washed over me like a tidal wave. Despite the exhaustion that threatened to engulf me, sleep remained elusive, my mind racing with countless possibilities and uncertainties. Upon entering my apartment, Kelly's bright smile greeted me like a ray of sunshine, momentarily dispelling the shadows that clung to my weary soul. "Why are you here, Zena? Shouldn't you be with my brother, celebrating your engagement?" she teased her playful banter, a welcome distraction from the weight of my responsibilities. "I was, but I had to go to work," I replied, the weariness in my voice belying the facade of composure I struggled to maintain. "Why aren't you with him now?" Kelly persisted, her curiosity insatiable as ever. "Kelly, please. I just need some rest," I sighed, the exhaustion of the day threatening to overwhelm me. "You could have done that in your fiancé's apartment, not here," Kelly teased, her words laced with playful banter as she observed my presence in our shared space. Undeterred by my weariness, Kelly continued, her curiosity piqued by my return. "So, how was work? Anything new?" she inquired, her gaze on me. My response was met with wide-eyed disbelief, Kelly's concern palpable as she processed the gravity of my situation. "Are you serious? Because if you're joking about losing your job, it's messed up," she exclaimed, her voice tinged with genuine worry. I nodded solemnly, the weight of the mayor's ultimatum heavy upon me once more. "I wish I was, Kelly. But it's the truth. My career hangs in the balance," I confessed, the words heavy on my tongue. A moment of silence passed between us, punctuated only by the soft hum of the air conditioning. "Zena, goodness, you should have told me," Kelly lamented, her disappointment evident in the furrow of her brow. "I know, Kelly. And I'm sorry," I apologized, regret colouring my words as I met her gaze. Her expression softened a hint of understanding in her eyes. "I've been an ass about you working too much lately, haven't I?" she admitted, a frown marring her features. I shook my head, a small smile playing at the corners of my lips. "It's okay, Kelly. You couldn't have known," I reassured her, grateful for her forgiveness. Her curiosity, however, remained unabated, her questions a testament to her unwavering support. "So, have you cracked the big case?" she asked, her eyes alight with anticipation. I shook my head, a flicker of disappointment crossing my features. "Not yet. But I have a lead that might prove fruitful," I admitted, the glimmer of hope reigniting within me. Kelly's response was swift and unwavering, her faith in me a beacon in the darkness. "Wonderful. I trust you, Zena. You'll handle this, and you'll keep your job. And if you don't, I'll just have my father talk to the mayor on your behalf," she declared, her confidence infectious. "Thank you, Kelly. I appreciate it," I replied, gratitude swelling within me at her unwavering support. But as much as I appreciated her company, exhaustion weighed heavily upon me, my bed beckoning like a siren's call. "I have to go and rest now. My bed is calling," I confessed, the weariness evident in my voice. Kelly's insistence, however, persisted, her eagerness undimmed by my exhaustion. "Come on, Zena. Can't you stay up for just a little bit? We can go through a few wedding catalogues," she suggested a hint of excitement in her voice. I shook my head, a pang of regret tugging at my heartstrings. "No, Kelly. I would love to, but I have a long day tomorrow," I declined, my exhaustion winning out over her enthusiasm. --- My alarm didn't need to wake me up; I was already awake before it rang. I hurriedly got dressed and made my way out of my room. Kelly wasn't up yet, which was strange because she was usually an early riser. I grabbed a quick breakfast and headed to the station. "Morning, Chief," Ceila's familiar voice greeted me, offering a cup of much-needed coffee. "How's our star jailer today, Ceila?" I inquired, masking my unease with casual conversation. Ceila's response was cryptic, "I don't know, but I guess you'll have to see for yourself, Chief," she said. A smirk played on my lips. "I'd love to see him now," I replied, and Ceila nodded in understanding. Entering my office, I dropped my bag with a thud, the weight of the impending interrogation pressing heavily upon me. Soon, I found myself in the interrogation room, locking eyes with Manuel López, the right hand of El Fuego. "Manuel López, it's been a while," I greeted, attempting to maintain composure despite the tension crackling in the air. His silence was deafening. "You know why you're here, right?" I pressed, but still, he remained stoic. "Tell me everything I need to know, Mr. López. Where is your boss?" I demanded, frustration simmering beneath the surface as his lips remained sealed shut, unyielding to my inquiries. With each futile attempt to extract information, my frustration mounted, coalescing into a visceral anger. Then, unexpectedly, his voice sliced through the silence like a knife. "You're too pretty for all this," he sneered, his words dripping with disdain. "Why don't you let me show you a better way? You could make some serious cash, not the scraps they throw your way here," he smirked. Blinded by rage, I unleashed a fury I didn't know I possessed, slamming his face against the unyielding surface of the table. "I've had enough of this," I seethed, my voice trembling with anger. "So, you have a choice: the easy way or the hard way?" I demanded, punctuating my words with a forceful blow to his face.
