Chapter 1
Zena's POV I blinked profusely as I struggled to keep my sleepy eyes open, the incessant blare of my alarm piercing through the haze of morning drowsiness. With a heavy groan, I reached out, blindly searching for my phone in the dim light of dawn, desperate to silence the relentless noise that shattered the tranquillity of my room. "Zena!" The sharp call of my name jolted me upright, a surge of adrenaline coursing through my veins as I scanned the room for signs of danger. Yet, all I found was Kelly, my ever-energetic roommate, standing in the doorway with a mischievous grin plastered across her face. "What's wrong? Is everything okay?" I asked, my voice tinged with concern as I searched her expression for any hint of distress. Kelly chuckled, her amusement evident as she leaned against the door frame with casual disregard. "Oh, nothing's wrong. I just love seeing you like this," she replied, her tone laced with playful teasing. Relief flooded through me as I realized there was no imminent threat, only Kelly's usual antics. Rolling my eyes, I flopped back onto the bed, the remnants of adrenaline slowly dissipating as I succumbed to the pull of exhaustion. "Not today, Satan," I muttered under my breath, my words muffled by the soft fabric of my pillow as I closed my eyes in a futile attempt to block out the world. But even in the darkness behind my eyelids, I could still hear the insistent beep of my alarm, a relentless reminder of the responsibilities awaiting me beyond the comfort of my bed. With a resigned sigh, I pushed myself upright once more, determined to face the day head-on, no matter how much I longed for just a few more moments of peace. "Don't you think it's time to get up?" Kelly's voice cut through the silence, her tone tinged with exasperation as she eyed me with a mixture of amusement and annoyance. I groaned in response, the weight of fatigue pressing down on me like a leaden blanket. "I'm the police chief now, don't I deserve a bit of extra shut-eye?" I grumbled, rubbing my eyes wearily as I attempted to stave off the encroaching exhaustion. Kelly arched an eyebrow, her expression a playful blend of scepticism and amusement. "Just because you're Chief now doesn't mean you can afford to be late for work," she retorted, her tone laced with gentle reproach. I knew she was right, of course. As much as I hated to admit it, my new position came with a heightened sense of responsibility, one that left little room for indulgence or procrastination. With a resigned sigh, I pushed myself out of bed, steeling myself for the day ahead. "Fine, you win," I conceded defeat, shooting Kelly a half-hearted glare as I dragged myself towards the bathroom. "Of course, I'm always right," Kelly quipped, a smug grin playing across her lips as she followed me out of the room. Despite her teasing demeanour, I knew Kelly had my best interests at heart. Ever since I'd moved here six years ago, she'd been my closest friend and confidante, a constant source of support and companionship in a city that often felt overwhelming and lonely. As I stepped into the shower, the warm water cascading over my skin, I couldn't help but reflect on the journey that had brought me here. Leaving my sister behind had been one of the hardest decisions of my life, yet somehow, I'd managed to carve out a place for myself in this unfamiliar city, thanks in no small part to Kelly's unwavering friendship. By the time I emerged from the bathroom, I got dressed, Kelly had already laid out breakfast on the kitchen table, a small but thoughtful gesture that warmed my heart. "Thanks, Kel," I murmured, sinking into a chair with a grateful sigh as I reached for a steaming cup of coffee. Kelly waved off my thanks with a dismissive flick of her wrist. "Don't mention it. Now eat up, you've got a big day ahead of you," she replied, her voice laced with genuine concern. I nodded in agreement, the weight of responsibility settling on my shoulders again. As I shovelled food into my mouth with uncharacteristic haste, I couldn't help but wonder what the day would bring. After hastily finishing my breakfast, I grabbed my bag and headed towards the door, Kelly trailing behind me with a playful smirk on her lips. "Aren't you going to work?" I asked, puzzled by her lack of urgency. "Nah, not feeling it today. Plus, my dad won't even notice I'm gone," Kelly replied casually, a hint of bitterness creeping into her voice. I hesitated, torn between the desire to linger and the knowledge that I couldn't afford to be late. "You sure you don't want to go in today? It might do you good," I suggested, hoping to persuade her otherwise. Kelly shrugged, a wistful smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Maybe next time. Now go on, before you're late," she urged, giving me a gentle push towards the door. With a final glance over my shoulder, I reluctantly stepped out into the hallway, the weight of Kelly's unspoken worries lingering in the air long after I'd gone. As I made my way to the station, my thoughts turned to Noah, my boyfriend. With a glance at my phone, I dialled his number, eager to hear his voice and share the details of my morning. "Hey, sweetheart," I greeted him as he picked up, a surge of warmth flooding through me at the sound of his familiar voice. "Hey, I was just about to call you. Missed you. How was your night?" Noah asked, his concern palpable even through the static of the phone line. "Slept like a baby, perks of being the boss," I replied with a chuckle. "You earned it, babe. You've worked hard for this," Noah reassured me, his words a soothing balm to my frayed nerves. Before long, Noah suggested we celebrate with dinner, an idea I eagerly accepted. As we made plans, I couldn't help but feel a surge of gratitude for the life I'd built here, surrounded by people who cared for me and supported me unconditionally. "It's been six years since I moved here," I reflected, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips. "And despite the challenges, I wouldn't change a thing." As I ended the call with Noah and pulled into the station's parking lot, a sense of contentment washed over me. Despite the inevitable challenges that lay ahead, I knew that with Kelly and Noah's unwavering support, I could face whatever the day threw at me. As I stepped out of the car and headed towards the bustling precinct, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for the adventures that awaited me.
