The Beta sighed. Training provided no real challenge to him anymore unless Alpha Benjamin actually fought him. He was the strongest warrior barring the alpha of course, which was why he'd been given the title in the first place. But lately he'd been feeling down in the dumps. At 25 years old he still had yet to meet his mate and it didn't help seeing those who had, in love and making googly eyes at each other. He wanted that as well. A woman to cherish, to protect and a family of his own, pups that were made with love. What his parents had before they passed in a rogue attack five years ago.
Alpha Benjamin took one look at his depressed beta and knew something was up. He also knew what it was. He'd seen the way Cody stared at the couples in the pack, the longing and the wanting clear to see to everyone who felt sorry for him. He'd make an excellent husband and father, everyone in the pack knew that but it was also evident his mate was not in the Shining Silver pack either.
"Cody" Alpha Benjamin called his name softly, breaking his Beta out of his thoughts "would you like to visit Alpha Gregory of the Crimson Tide pack and hand him this letter personally? Maybe spend a day or so away from the pack and as a distraction from your thoughts?"
So even Alpha Benjamin had noticed how down he was lately. Great thought Cody, his own Alpha was worried about him when it should be the other way round. Then again it had never bothered Benjamin that he hadn't found his own mate yet, citing the moon goddess would grant him one, he just had to wait. But Cody wasn't that patient.
Cody ran a hand through his golden locks and eyed his Alpha thoughtfully. He didn't really have to go take a letter to Alpha Gregory, he suspected it was just a ruse by Benjamin but he was right that it would be a good distraction.
Let's get out of here for a bit, it will do us both some good his wolf Apollo said and Cody decided to heck with it. Alpha Gregory was great company, a hoot to be exact. A Scotsman who visited America and decided he loved it so much he formed his own pack near Benjamin's own and had instantly sought out his neighbours. Not only that but he had a wicked sense of humour and was quite unlike any other Alpha he'd met.
"Alright" Cody said reluctantly although the prospect of leaving for a day or two for a bit of a break was slowly growing on him as well as the company of a hilarious Scotsman.
"Great" Alpha Benjamin said pleased, green eyes lighting up as he began to write what Cody suspected was a false letter but let him carry on the ruse regardless.
He handed the letter to Cody who pocketed it. "Are you going by wolf or...."
"I'll pack some clothes and carry a backpack. Besides Apollo would never allow me to walk by foot you know that" he chuckled "besides a run would do me some good and cheer me up."
His blue eyes regarded Alpha Benjamin for a moment "thanks for this" he said briefly and Alpha Benjamin pretended to look confused "for what? You're doing me a service" he protested and Cody nodded, stifling a grin and headed out the door, intending to pack some clothes before shifting and leaving for the Crimson Tide pack.
Alpha Benjamin leaned back in his chair. Of course the letter was a fake but he had to do something to snap his Beta out of his constant sadness. Maybe he would be lucky enough to find his mate at the Crimson Tide pack and come back a happier man? But he knew Cody wouldn't, he'd visited the pack enough times that if his mate had been there he would have found her by now. He sighed. He really hoped this worked because Cody wasn't just Benjamin's Alpha he was also his best friend and the one he turned to for advice. He really wanted his friend back and was willing to do whatever it took to make him happy.
Apollo was ecstatic as Cody packed the basics to take. The letter was placed securely inside as he zipped the bag up and hoisted it on his shoulder.
Alpha Gregory is awesome he enthused and gave Cody an image of him wagging his tail like a puppy in his excitement, Cody chortling as he made his way downstairs and outside. Remember the time he got us drunk and then played that prank on us? We never did find out how he managed to put all those mouse traps around us while we passed out without hearing it.
That actually hurt when we woke up Cody reminded him.
Yeah but it was funny afterwards and we got our own back.
They reached the outskirts of the forest and eyed the trees, sniffing the air and giving their goodbyes to patrol who had been mind-linked by the Alpha and informed of his leaving and whereabouts. There was no smell of rogues nearby, not that he'd expected to smell one but it was better to be safe than sorry thought Cody. After the death of his parent's he'd started being particularly cautious before leaving for anywhere and it had proved a good idea on more than one occasion. He wasn't about to change his own ritual now.
Let's get going already Apollo said a little impatient now, images of a big burly Alpha Gregory and the copious amounts of alcohol they were sure to be consuming already. It took a lot to get a werewolf drunk but Alpha Gregory kept the largest stash known to man at the pack house. Cody sometimes privately wondered if he was an alcoholic but was far too polite to voice it. Either way the man knew how to have a good time without leaving his pack unprotected.
Cody took a deep breath and put the backpack on the ground, shifting with ease into his large grey and white wolf. "Let's go" he growled to Apollo who was more than happy to oblige.
