When I arrived at Lawrence’s room, I found the bathroom door closed and heard running water. Good, he must be feeling better if he was washing up. I walked to the window, where I admired the view. This morning, the sun had come out and illuminated everything from the smallest curve of the leaves to the rounded bald tops of the mountains. I could see why the gargoyles had settled in this place. They’d like the exposed heights to sun themselves and look over the majesty beyond. The events of the morning and Eliza’s threat/warning kept me from admiring the view too much. I had to remember that the tall hills hid deep shadows and foul deeds, and as someone had cautioned me, a web would always try to trap me in its strands and destroy me.
