"We're playing pool for a few rounds," Kane waved a dismissive hand towards his mother and father, avoiding the narrowed gaze of Ally who motioned for him to leave with them. "I'm staying a bit longer," it was his shot, and he stepped around the pool table, eyeing all the billiard ball before finally finding his best shot. If he could make the cue ball curve, the 7 and the 2 could both be shot in the same pocket. It would be a difficult shot, but he knew he could make it. Well, he would have if the others didn't keep distracting him.
At the last second, Ally pushed his arm and the tip slipped, causing the ball to roll for a few seconds before it came to a stop. Jay placed a palm over his mouth, noticing a sudden burst of flames forming behind Kane's gaze, and his shoulders instantly broadened as he grabbed the white cue ball from the table and placed it back where it was, "You're so annoying."
"We have to go—"
"I literally told you guys I'm staying," he snapped, eyeing the table again and attempting to reassess the shot, "Mom and Mike are fine with it."
"Honestly, I kind of want to stay too—I haven't played pool in a while," Tessa stripped Mike's arm away and stepped towards Kane, "we use to play all the time when we had one in our home."
"You can stay, I don't mind," Mike smiled, shoving his hands in his front pockets, "I can come pick you up later."
"It'll be fun," Tessa tapped Kane's back, "like old times."
"Mom don't act like you want this work," Kane said with a smirk, handing the chalk to Jay who snickered, "I'd body you if you versed me right now." He missed his shot, and although he was angry at Ally for messing it up for him, he was kind of excited that his mother was staying with him.
"Oh shut up, I used to beat you every time," she shoved him, accidentally causing Kane to bump into Jay.
Jay stumbled sideways, and Kane's reflex made him reach around his waist to make sure he was not going to fall. "You alright?" he asked, making sure Jay was balanced before pulling apart from him.
Jay instantly returned his focus on the game—if he had continued to look at Kane, he would have for sure began to blush. He could already feel his legs lose its strength from his nerves rushing wildly, feeling a tingling sensation where Kane had grabbed him. "I'm fine," and he wasn't surprised that he missed his next shot; his mind had not been focused on the game at all, but on wanting to have Kane grab him again.
When he returned the chalk to Kane, their fingers brushed together, but Kane hadn't been paying attention since he was chatting with his family.
"Mom can text you when we need a ride," Kane said to his step-father.
Mike nodded his head, "I might be sleeping so call Ally."
"Will do," Tessa smiled, and Ally and her father soon turned around and began walking towards the exit.
While they were leaving, Mike glanced backwards, seeing the three of them laughing as Tessa attempted to steal the cue stick from Kane, who stopped her with a long smile. Mike's eyes instantly lost its friendliness, and he quietly asked Ally, "That boy...it's him, isn't it?"
Ally pushed open the door, and they both walked outside. "Yea...Kane started hanging around him."
"Oh no..." Mike sent a trembling hand through his hair, "Ally, that's not good. It might come back to light and—"
"I'll handle it Dad," Ally assured, although she was biting the end of her thumb nail, "I'll make sure to break their friendship as soon as I can."
In the bar, Tessa finally had her turn, and it was her against Kane first, Jay standing by Kane's side and getting a swift of his soft cologne every time he walked by. Every single of Kane's amazing shots, he would turn to Jay and wink, mouthing, "You like that?"
Jay hoped Kane couldn't hear all the thoughts that were rushing in his head, and he placed his palms over his cheeks for a moment, trying to hide the blushing until it died down. When the game was over, Tessa leaned her head backwards in defeat, rolling her eyes and shoving the cue stick towards Jay, "You're lucky, I missed that last shot so you had your turn."
"Excuses," Kane laughed, opening a few buttons from his shirt dress. Both of them had extended their cue sticks towards Jay, and Jay no longer knew which one to pick. Kane explained, "He hasn't played you yet mom, you guys can have at it."
"That's okay—"
"Jay, stop. You'll probably beat her, she sucks," Kane mocked, to which his mother grimaced.
"I'll show you my old lady skills, come on boy," she grabbed Jay's arm and pulled him upwards, forcing him to take Kane's cue stick and play her one round. In the end, although it was intensely close, Tessa was victorious, and Jay was in disbelief, eyeing Kane and Tessa jump in each other's arms and cheer.
Jay had never seen anybody as good as them two.
"Where did you guys learn how to play?"
Tessa pointed to Kane, "His Dad won the pool table Olympics three times in a row. He had a bunch of national rankings too, that's how I got into it. Then I taught Kane, but then he went on and started playing competitions and stuff so he became better than me."
"Wait," Jay raised an eyebrow, "Who's your father?"
"Eric Trésor."
Instantly, Jay's face fell blank, and he eyed both their smiles, feeling his heart start to clench. He followed pool as if it was his job, of course he had heard of the infamous Eric Trésor. He was popular in the pool game since he won so many awards.
He had also wept like a baby when he heard the news of his passing. His eyebrows began quivering as he quietly said, "I'm so sorry for your loss."
"That's okay," Kane wrapped an arm around his mother's shoulders, a long smile from ear to ear, "just made us stronger than ever, right mom?"
She chuckled, tapping his chest and added, "Right."
They continued to play, all three going through games after games, others joining in to take part and Kane stepped aside, seeing his mother beating a bunch of men who kept thinking they could beat her. He eyed her protectively, making sure she was alright, and Jay was standing beside him, taking a few swings from the glass of water he had requested from the bar.
"Your mother's a sweetheart," Jay said, eyeing the way she laughed with her opponent before taking her next shot.
Kane shrugged his shoulders, "She can be a devil when she needs to be. I'm kidding, she's literally an angel."
"It must've been tough when your father passed."
"He passed before I was born," he admitted, leaning closer to Jay, "so it didn't affect me as much as it crushed her. Still tough to realize I never will get...a father relationship...you know?"
"You have your step-father."
"Yea," Kane turned to face him, "but that's not really the same. He's not my real dad—he can decide to leave whenever he wants, but he's really cool though so that's the closest thing I'll get."
Jay tightened his lip, unable to stop wondering if how Kane's body would feel wrapped around his own. As if Kane had read his mind, Kane reached around his shoulder, "At least I have friends like yourself to keep me afloat, huh?" He was joking, but Jay felt his body begin throbbing, wishing Kane left his arm over his shoulder just for a few seconds longer. Unfortunately, he pulled apart almost as soon as he had placed an arm around, and Kane noticed Jay's eyes shift, his face suddenly beaming a slight pink.
He raised an eyebrow, "You alright? You seem like your about to faint—"
"Yea," Jay felt flustered, pulling the collar of his shirt away from around his neck, "it's just...kind of hot in here, and I'm starting to sweat so. It's getting crowded too."
"We should probably head back then," he waved to his mom, and when Tessa noticed him, she handed the cue stick to a random person before approaching them.
She also eyed Jay, "Oh my...you look like you have a fever, are you alright?"
"He said it's too crowded and too hot, we should text Ally to come pick us up."
"Sure," Tessa rapidly pulled her phone out of her pocket, and sent a text. Then, she worriedly placed a palm on Jay's forehead, "You are kind of warm...do you want us to give you a ride home?"
"That's okay."
They all headed outside, saying their goodbyes to Jay and Tessa wrapping him into an endearing hug before letting him leave. It was only when she was sure he was out of sight and hearing, that she nudged Kane and said, "That boy has a crush on you."
Kane violently turned his head towards his mother, raising an eyebrow in shock, "You think so?"
"I know so."
"What makes you say that?"
"I don't know," she shrugged her shoulders, "motherly instinct."
"You're definitely wrong, besides I've been piping girls since I was twelve, no chance of stopping now—"
"Why do you..." she rapidly grabbed his ear and pinched as hard as she could, twisting it slightly to make sure it hurt him, "...always talk about girls like that? Stop saying these things."
Kane laughed, wincing at the same time as he cried, "I'm sorry mom! I'm sorry, haha, it hurts! Stop!"
