Chapter 6: Blindsided (2)

“You’re a kind man… you’ve never killed anyone before, right?” Dante sighed heavily as he asked that question. There was a near ominous sounding voice to him. As if he himself had already done much worse things. Maybe that was part of the reason that he never judged others too harshly.
“Yes, I’ve never…” Akira confirmed.
“Then should I share some advice with you?” Dante suggested.
“What kind?” Akira questioned while leaning forward on the table top.
“There is more than one way to ‘kill’ someone… And it doesn’t have to be physical, you can also ‘end’ him in a different manner if that suits your fancy more.” Dante explained, the sheer ease in which he spoke, made it seem much more dark in nature.
“H-how?” Akira stuttered.
“Your boss, there must be a reason he killed you, right? You know something about him that he doesn’t want the world to know about, and that’s why he ended you.” Dante didn’t take long to explain.
“Yes… that’s… exactly it… but how did you know?” Akira had never told the man anything about the reason he was killed. He had held back as he didn’t completely trust anyone in this world.
“Even though you didn’t tell me, I believe there are few reasons that one would resort to such tactics as ending another’s life to silence them…” Dante explained.
“That’s really smart, I wouldn’t have figured it out as easily as you did…” Akira said as he leaned back into his chair. He still wasn’t convinced.
“Hah… don’t think lowly of yourself, you’re very talented in many areas… Now listen I’ll help you out with that man… If you have enough faith in me I can ruin his life completely so that he would wish he was dead…” Dante offered his services without much issue.
‘…ruin Noah completely?’ Somehow inside Akira’s mind those words didn’t sound as appealing as they might have sounded just before when he was blood thirsty for revenge. Why was it just now that he didn’t want to hurt the man in any way? It was difficult to tell to say the least. “No… that’s not…” He hesitated.
“I understand, you don’t want to hurt him still… not in such a brutal manner…” Dante was surprisingly complacent with the other’s reply. Just like every time before that, he respected the other’s decision.
“At least not until he’s regained his spark…” Akira suddenly spoke up again, a strange look came over his face as he said that.
“Spark?” Dante asked.
“Yes… he’s always been much more than an ordinary company owner… they fear him but they also genuinely respect him… because he has something that most people don’t have… That spark… I couldn’t bring myself to end him because it was missing… it made me feel like he wasn’t the same person I wanted to get back at…” Akira explained as he took a deep breath. That was something that he’d been thinking for the past few days, just now finally managing to put it all into words perfectly.
“I think I understand you that much better now… I’ll make accommodations for you when you decide to take the next step. For now do as you think is right and help him get back on his feet.” Dante simply explained, even though the voice changer, you could hear a smile creeping up on the man’s face.
“Yes, thank you!” Akira was quick to smile as well. He was cheerful once more.
“You’re always so polite with me… I wish all people were like you.” Dante chuckled to himself.
“It’s because you saved me… Dante…” Akira said while glancing at the screen. From the very first time they met, the entity known as ‘Dante’ was always this laptop. It wasn’t a person although it felt like he was. Akira didn’t know anything besides the man’s name. That was the extent of the information he had on him. And he was somewhat satisfied with that.
“I would do it again if I have to. So don’t be scared of that man, alright?” Dante spoke up, again that sort of reassurance was something the other man wasn’t used to.
“Yes.” Akira nodded his head in understanding.
“Well, it’s been a joy but I don’t think I can stay for much longer, the police are trying to track me again.” Dante remarked in this sort of matter of fact voice. He didn’t sound too worried about it either.
“What?” Akira’s eyes instantly grew in shock. He was about to stand up from the table and suggest they move.
“Sorry maybe I said too much… but don’t worry, this isn’t a big deal. The police are much too lazy to actually hire experts for jobs like these. So surely I have little to worry about.” Dante once more calmed him down with such ease that it was surprising.
“If there’s anything I can help you with!” Akira suggested.
“Not at all! Just focus on your own goals… everything else you can leave to me…” Dante said as the connection ended prematurely. The tall man that stood behind the laptop closed it carefully and took it in his hands. He headed out of the café’s private room without a second glance at the man.
Akira sat back down in his seat, he drank the remainder of his coffee. ‘Again Dante is protecting me without wishing for anything in return… I can’t help but feel like I should be suspicious of him as well and yet… the amount of gratitude I have for him will never waver…’ He thought to himself while glancing at the empty space where the laptop was previously standing.
‘He forced the liquid out of my system, made sure my stomach was completely wiped of the drug I was fed and helped me all throughout the last few years, gave me a new identity… everything…’ Akira recalled old memories from years ago, the incident left him with an unbearable fear of drinking things that were prepared by other people. And yet when he was near Dante it seemed he was alright with it. He looked down at the empty cup and sighed.
‘No matter how you look at it there’s no way it’s all in good faith and good will… there must be that much more to it…’ Akira was convinced this was a high effort way to manipulate him.
‘However if I were to seek the answers to these questions of mine I’m afraid I will only end up angering him…’ He didn’t wish for such an outcome and instead chose a more peaceful route instead.
‘I don’t really need to know any of that… and at the end of the day… it’s not for me to understand if he doesn’t want to tell me… Regardless of his reasons I will comply with him, whatever it is… I have to continue living… I have to get back at Noah…’ Akira’s eyes lit up again.
“I have to…” Akira felt the words were somewhat stuck in the back of his throat. His low voice that barely spoke the first three words felt somewhat lost.
‘What do I really want?’ He wondered to himself as he stood up and headed out the door. There was no need for him to understand right now, time would tell…
