The Earls of Rayburne were acknowledged as one of the oldest and most distinguished families in the country. The Earl thought cynically that Lord Frazer was a hard man but still pretty astute. He wished to conceal from people in the County and his friends, if he had any, that this was an exceptional situation. It was not something of which either he or the bridegroom would be particularly proud. The Vicar fidgeted for a moment. Then, making the excuse that he wanted to fetch his Prayer Book, he hurried away into the Vestry. The Earl knew that he was embarrassed at what he thought was a very hole-in-the-corner Wedding.
