Chapter ThreeThe Earl woke from what had been a restless sleep to awareness that it was his Wedding day. He thought that the sky should be dark and there should be fog over the land, instead of which the sun was shining and the birds were singing. He climbed out of bed slowly, feeling as if his legs would not carry him and went across the room to the window. Already Cosnat had four men working in the garden and he himself had taken on a new lease of life and the Earl understood how much it had hurt him to see the garden overgrown with weeds and broken panes of glass in the greenhouses. The Kitchen Garden, he learnt, had produced less and less that was edible, but then now Cosnat seemed almost like a young man as he ordered his assistants about.
