"What?" I barked into the phone as I picked up.
"It's Max," he finally answered after a moment of silence, his voice shaking.
I frowned, wondering why he was calling me and why he sounded so terrible. My hackles immediately went up, something was clearly wrong.
"What's going on Max?" I demanded. "Spit it out."
Sara sat up and looked at me with a worried expression; she shuffled closer to me so that she could maybe hear the other end of the phone call. I squeezed her hand comfortingly as I waited for Max to tell me what was going on.
"It's Eli," Max said, his voice breaking at the end of his sentence. "They got to him. The Frankie brothers… they killed Eli."
