Chapter 7: Date (2)

“You’re going to catch a cold…” Gabriel said as he took off his jacket and placed it on the woman’s shoulders. He held the cigar in his mouth but still didn’t start smoking it.
“And you aren’t?” Elizabeth giggled. “Don’t give me your coat, I’m fine.” She said as she tried to refuse it but the man already put it on her.
“I’m not the one wearing a dress, so I’m a bit better off in this weather.” Gabriel remarked as he took hold of the cigar one again.
“Haha… You’re right about that…” Elizabeth giggled. ‘Him in a dress… now that would be a sight to see…’ She thought to herself as she giggled some more.
“About him… he’s very fine… I guess…” Gabriel held back on saying anything overly critical about the other man.
“What are you talking about? He’s a total loser… an arrogant snob that can’t see further from that big nose of his…” Elizabeth remarked as she threw her cigar on the ground and crushed it under her hells to make sure it was put out.
“I thought you liked him, you were listening to him so much.” Gabriel was surprised at the woman’s sudden words.
“Yeah I listened to him as to not be rude… Which was a mistake since that prick wouldn’t shut up. He thinks he’s so very great for selling insurance to people.” Elizabeth said as she took hold of the man’s hand and took the half burnt cigar from him. “I’m going to finish smoking it, you don’t need to pretend like you smoke either.” She smiled at him.
“Ah… I just made up smoking to get out, I don’t really do…” Gabriel remarked as he watched the woman smoke his cigar which he had only once put in his mouth. And somehow he still felt odd at the thought that the woman’s lips were touching the same place his lips were.
“I noticed… Thanks for saying it though, I wouldn’t have been able to stand him talking much longer.” Elizabeth said as she calmly let out the smoke from her lips.
“This date turned out bad, didn’t it?” Gabriel remarked as he watched the woman’s side profile, somehow it was difficult for him to look away.
“Yeah, but it’s best like this… I don’t imagine what it would be like if I actually fell for a guy like that.” Elizabeth said as she looked up at the night sky, the stars that filled it had an almost insignificant glow and the moon was hidden behind clouds that further dimmed its light.
“Do you think Jennifer will call me back?” Gabriel asked as he leaned to the wall next to the woman.
“Do you want her to?” Elizabeth asked as she turned to look at the man next to her.
“I’m hoping she won’t…” Gabriel crossed his arms.
“Haha… thought so… Don’t worry about that, after you told her you were a handyman she shot me an angry message saying you were broke.” Elizabeth said then held her cigar in her mouth while she took out her phone.
“Brutal… true though…” Gabriel remarked as he saw the messages the women had exchanged. “Do you get along with her? You didn’t seem to talk that much…”
“We’re not really close, she was just the only single friend I could think off… Sorry to do this to you…” Elizabeth said with a genuinely apologetic voice. “But I’m glad you came here… I feel like you’re quite better company than that Lois buddy there…”
“You’re far better company than Jennifer as well…” Gabriel admitted. ‘Honestly I wish we two were on a date instead…’ He thought to himself as he looked down at the ground, the cigar the woman had previously stepped on, now had a faint flicker as if still holding onto the light it previously had. Gabriel stepped on it again to make sure it was off.
“How about we go have dinner and enjoy ourselfes as much as we can? I don’t think there’s any need to impress those two there…” Elizabeth suggested as she threw the other cigar she had on the ground and lit it off.
“Sure… but… You really have to stop this bad habit of yours, littering is no good.” Gabriel remarked as he leaned forward and took the two cigar buds then threw them in the nearest trash can.
“Ah… sorry…” Elizabeth never really paid attention to things like that but somehow now that Gabriel had mentioned it, it stuck in her mind. ‘I guess it really is a bad habit…’
“Let’s go back.” Gabriel smiled as he opened the door to the restaurant once more and welcomed the woman in.
“You know… you really are a gentleman, you gave me your jacket, you opened the door for me as well, you pulled the chair out…” Elizabeth thought all of those things were very by the book so she never really required any of her past boyfriends to do them. But it was still a nice change of pace to have someone do such small but very meaningful things for her.
“Ah… my father always told me how important it was to do nice things for the people we like. It’s a bit of a childish way to say it but I still think back on those words a lot...” Gabriel said as they went back to the table.
“It’s really sweet… He taught you well.” Elizabeth said with a smile that was not characteristic for her usually stern and business only manner.
They were seated once again and the conversation continued, just this time Elizabeth and Gabriel were the ones completely dominating the conversation topics….
