19 Her own breathing sounded too loud in Scout’s ears. All of the other sounds in the public house around her were still there but were muted, like her head was underwater. She couldn’t move, not even to brush aside the tickle of tears streaming down her face. To think she had enough fingers to count back the days to a point where she had never seen a dead body. And not enough fingers to count all the ones she’d seen since. She had never even properly met Hal, and it sounded like whatever he did for his bosses was at least partially unsavory, but Seeta moaning his name over and over again was more than Scout could bear.
