13 Emilie must have seen familiar landmarks because she stopped tapping at the temple of her glasses and sat forward, squatting on her toes with splayed fingers on the floor of the truck for balance. If the driver braked hard, Scout would be on her own. But Emilie kept her balance better than Scout thought possible, even when the truck took a turn to start down a curving ramp. Emilie edged closer to the open hatch of the truck. Now that they had left the main road, there were no vehicles behind them. Scout was getting an “it’s now or never” vibe and put her feet under her so that, like Emilie, she was squatting and not sitting. “Get ready,” Emilie said to Scout.
