Once we reached the safety of our condo I sat Matie on a couch and folded my arms looking at her with disapproval.
"Now you understand what I meant when I said you should wait for your Mate? You saw he wasn't happy about what Ossy said. "
"You can't possibly think he will reject me?" - she asked with fear written all over her face.
"I don't think so, but it doesn't change the fact that he won't be happy about you screwing guys from almost every Pack under Council's reign."
"So what, you think your brother was saint all of this time and hasn't slept around?" - she asked defensively, sounding like a kid.
"I don't know, I would never ask him that, but even if he did, he was definitely more discreet about it than you."
She sighed and looked away from me. Yeah, we made fun of her conquests many times, never really thinking what it may bring in the future. But now with Freddy's happiness on the line, her past licentiousness became personal for me.
" So what am I supposed to do?" - she asked softer, not like a feisty girl she is - "Maybe it's best to wait for his birthday?"
"Really Matie?! You made a mess and now you are planning to run away from the consequences?! Need I remind you, that he's my brother?" - I'll admit it, I was mad. Ok, I was f*****g pissed off. And that stupid idea of waiting another fourteen months for his 18 birthday, that's just beyond ridiculous. Matie and I never really fought with each other, we teased one another and even made fun of the other, but this time things might end differently.
"I can give you a week, but the sooner you tell him the better." - I finally announced, and she glared at me.
"And what are you going to do then?"
"I'm gonna tell him myself."
Her glare hardened even more, betrayal clear on her face, but I wasn't having it. As much as I don't want to take any sides, she should have thought about it sooner, because the minute she told me about him being her Mate I was already involved.
"Fine!" - she hissed after a while and started walking to her room.
"Great!" - I shouted after her.
"Wonderful!" - she yelled back.
"Fantastic!"
"Oh, shut up, Morgan, and better help me prepare for this evening." - hearing that I knew I won.
I helped Matie choose her outfit for the night, using my inside knowledge of what my brother thought was sexy. Yeah, I know it was kind of a cheater's move but it was all for a good cause. And as every girl I ever saw around Freddy was more on the natural beauty side we had a tough time finding something not too sluty in Matie's closet.
We ended up with a low cut, skinny jeans and pink shirt showing just a little bit of her cleavage. That was the best We could find. I advised her to use only eyeliner and mascara in her makeup and leave her dark waves loose. She suddenly looked five years younger and really pretty like a totally new girl. But she was eyeing her reflection with a dosage of scepticism.
"I don't know, Val. I look like I've just woken up. Just plain." - I rolled my eyes but our eyes met through the mirror - "I saw that!"
"So?" - I challenge her smirking - "But seriously trust me, he will like it better."
"I don't know, maybe I should wear heels? At least my ass would look better."
"Heels? To the roof? Are you f*****g insane?! Besides he's your Mate, he will see you without makeup at some point. So let's show him the worst you can be so the poor guy knows what he's getting into" - I snickered and she narrowed her eyes at me, but smiled either way.
"You're sometimes a real b***h, you know that?"
"Ha, so I was told. Now let's go, it's almost 10 and they won't get in there without you." - I said applying my lipstick.
We saw only a few students on our way to the clock tower and that was a good sign as the clinking sound coming from my bag could bring too much attention to us and we surely didn't want to make this party any bigger.
Almost all of our friends waited for us already, but I couldn't see my Beta and his Girl. That was strange because they are never late.
"Where's Rico and his better half?"
"He said they won't be coming. I think he and Izzi got a date or something." - Freddy announced scratching the back of his neck.
"Seriously?! They spend the whole summer together and he won't even spare us one evening?" - Ossy asked, folding his arms with disapproval. He was always very fond of Rico, maybe even a bit jealous about how close we are, as his future Beta is five years younger than he is.
"Give him a break, they may have spent the whole summer together but you know how auntie Nina is, she wouldn't let them share the room when they are in Dragon's Night." - I tried to defend my Beta.
"Really? But they are both over 18, why the hell is she like that?" - wide-eyed Ossy asked.
"No idea, but even uncle Hes can't do anything about that, so we all kinda accepted it."
"Enough of the drama, let's get this party started. But please no jumping off the roof or granpappy would get really mad this time." - Matie stopped our discussion and started opening doors behind which were the staircases on the roof.
We wanted to visit that place ever since we found those doors but it took a while before Matilda located the keys. We could of course break down the doors but it would probably blow up the possibility of coming here ever again. Once we were all on the stairs Matie locked the doors and we went up. Stairs ended by another set of doors behind which was a small gallery, going all around the tower ending with a steep roof.
The spot wasn't much, but that wasn't the most important part. The view was. From the top of the clock tower we could see absolutely everything in the radius of a few miles in every direction. It was marvelous, even by night and I can only imagine how it would look in the daylight.
"The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire, we don't need…" - Ossy started singing and doing some weird, happy dance.
"This is so great!" - said Max in awe. - "I'm even more glad that I met you guys."
"Yup, we are a pretty awesome group to hang out with. Now let's sit and taste that special booze Val brought. What is your Mom calling it again?" - Ossy asked, looking at me.
"Memory eraser. Apparently one of our warriors makes it in his basement. At first I had some concerns but my parents had been drinking it for years and no one got blind, so it should be fine."
"Why would someone go blind?" - Max asked clueless.
"One of the effects of alcohol poisoning." - said Vigo shortly with his inherent superiority.
"Pff, we Aussies don't know the meaning of alcohol poisoning." - Max retorted smugly.
"We'll see about that. Give us one bottle, Val." - Vigo asked with a smirk.
"Are you sure? Mom said that less than half a bottle is enough to put my dad out cold for a few hours and I think he can hold his alcohol better than any of you." - I asked with concern.
"Oh Cuz, are you worried about me or our new friend?" - Vigo teased me.
"Actually both, I'm not going to carry any of your drunken asses downstairs. So be smart, cause if you'll pass out I'm gonna leave you here for the night."
"Aye-Aye Captain!" - Vigo said with a mocking salute. I rolled my eyes and handed him a bottle, taking another one for the rest of us.
The two of them sat a bit further from us and started working on the bottle immediately. It was some kind of boyish challenge I think, but as they were also engaged in their conversation mostly about Vigo's powers and Max's life in Australia I suppose they will be alright.
The remaining five of us sat down on the ground facing a night mountain landscape. It was peaceful and quiet, I almost felt serene. Almost, cause my mind kept drifting off to Matie and Freddy and a little bit to thoughts if I'll find my own Mate this year. I really hope I will.
Ossy was goofing around cracking one joke after another making me get cramps from laughter, when my eyes landed on Matilda. She was smiling but she still looked tense. I tilted my head pointing to Freddy, discreetly so that none of the guys wouldn't notice and she understood what I meant as she nodded and turned to him.
"Hey Freddy, can we talk?" - she asked him, sounding a bit insecure, not like herself. Wow, her nerves are really eating her up.
"Sure, what's up?"
"I meant in private." - she added.
"Oh, yeah let's go." - he stood up and reached his hand to help her out. Charming gesture, like everything Freddy does. I'm so happy for them and I really hope none of them would f**k this up. They went a bit away from us and my eyes travelled after them. I must admit I was a bit nervous about what would happen.
"They are Mates, right?" - it was Gus who asked me that. I didn't answer, that wasn't my secret to tell, but my flabbergasted expression must've been all the confirmation he needed.
"What?! Really?" - Ossy started asking.
"Haven't you noticed how her behavior changed when he showed up at our table?" - Gus reminded him.
"Well yeah, but I was just convinced she was pissed at my not so subtle comment." - Ossy said with a nervous chuckle - "But hey, good for them. Composed guy like Freddy might be exactly what Matie needs."
"Let's just hope everything will end up good, otherwise Mother Hen over here might go all berserk." - Gus joked pointing at me. Was I this obvious? I smirked to myself, apparently my friends knew me better than I did myself.
"Don't worry, we already had THE talk. Matie knows what would happen if she screw with my brother." - I said nonshalantly. My eyes drifted to Matie and Freddy once again. My brother's back were facing us, so I couldn't see his reaction, while she was playing nervously with her fingers. It was funny to watch, almost endearing actually.
"You know that Vigo sensed his today too?" - Gus's words made me turn to him.
"What?! Why wouldn't he said anything? Who is she? And why the hell am I always the last to know?! That one is my Cousin and he is my Roommate yet no one says anything to me. Don't you people trust me at all?!" - Ossy asked even more shocked than before.
"No idea, he didn't even confirm when I asked him, but I know him too well to not notice."
So it was really happening. Our small group is getting bigger by the day. So no pressure, but now is my turn.
