CHAPTER FOUR
RAINA’S POV
I stood before the mirror, my reflection a stark reminder of the unfortunate turn my life had taken. The gown I wore seemed to mock me with its elegance, a cruel reminder of the life I was leaving behind. My eyes, once filled with hope and dreams, now reflected only despair and resignation. How had everything gone so wrong? Just moments ago, I had been on the verge of realizing my dreams, of being crowned Luna of the pack. But now, all of that lay in ruins, shattered by the revelation of Alpha Declan's claim.
As I sat there, lost in a sea of despair, the gentle knock on my door startled me out of my reverie. I hesitated for a moment before rising to answer, my heart heavy with dread.
I opened the door, I was met with the imposing figure of Alpha Declan, his expression unreadable as he stood before me.
His presence alone sent a shiver down my spine, reminding me of the daunting reality that awaited me beyond the confines of my room.
"It's time, Raina," he said, his voice low and commanding. "We must leave now."
I felt a lump in my throat as those words left his mouth. It was happening too fast and the reality left me feeling like I was trapped in a lucid dream.
With a heavy sigh, I nodded silently, unable to find the words to express the turmoil raging within me.
As I gathered my belongings, each item felt like a burden, a painful reminder of the life I was leaving behind. I glanced around my room one last time, taking in the familiar surroundings with a pang of nostalgia.
Alpha Declan watched me with an intensity that made my skin crawl, his eyes betraying nothing as he waited impatiently for me to finish. I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that washed over me in his presence, a sense of foreboding that left me trembling with apprehension.
With a heavy heart, I followed Alpha Declan out of the room and into the unknown, my footsteps echoing hollowly in the empty hallway.
As we made our way through the pack house, I couldn't help but steal one last glance back at the place I had once called home, a silent farewell to the life I was leaving behind. A carriage was already awaiting us in front of the packhouse.
I poked my head into the cabin before stepping into it. I had taken note of it earlier that there was no driver so Alpha Declan would probably be the one to ride the carriage.
My heart sank when I saw him step into the cabin with me.
“The carriage is enchanted, it'd drive itself,” he said, probably noticing the confused expression on my face.
I nodded and stared out of the window.
I have only heard tales about the Lycan pack but I have actually never had any encounter with any of them before. Lycans are way too powerful so we do our best to avoid the rogue ones. I don't know how far the journey is going to be but I know it's going to be a long one. I made a silent prayer that he doesn't try to strike up a conversation with me.
“There is a bottle of wine just across you in case you are thirsty,” He said, his deep voice reverberating through the carriage.
“I'm fine,” I responded in a harsh tone.
He didn't say anything afterwards.
I stared out of the window, numerous thoughts running through my mind. I wondered about Ethel and how he was going to be mated to another lucky girl.
“Anything wrong?” I heard Declan say, for the second time.
I gritted my teeth, hatred flashed in my eyes for him. The sound of his voice annoyed me. My life took a miserable turn because of him. If only he hadn't shown up.
“I said I'm fine,” I growled.
He chuckled in response. My head snapped at his nonchalant attitude.
“What is so funny?” I fired at him.
“You look so cute when you're angry,” he said with a flicker of admiration in his eyes.
My heart flipped at the comment and I frowned almost immediately. I was not supposed to be moved by his words. This man basically ruined my life in one night.
“Well I wouldn't look so cute when my claws are in your face,” I said in a threatening tone.
He laughed at my threats. I felt a bit embarrassed at his reaction. I knew how empty my threats sounded to him but I was mad and I couldn't stop myself.
“I would love to see you try, Mate,” he grinned evilly.
My heart skipped a beat as he said that word. Mate. That is what I was to him, his mate. My wolf howled happily within me and I couldn't help the smile that crept on my face.
Stop, I cautioned myself. Don't let him get to you. He's the enemy, remember?
I looked away and ignored him for the rest of the trip. We arrived at his pack earlier than I'd expected. The serene air filled me with warmth even through the cold night.
He helped me down from the carriage even though I didn't need it. I drew my hands away from him immediately I stepped down but the feel of his strength made an impression on me.
His castle was bigger than Ethel's and it made my blood boil with resentment seeing the satisfied smile on his face as we walked in. The staff and members of the royal family welcomed us warmly, all a ploy by him to get me to drop my guard but I wasn't going to let it work.
Alpha Declan showed me to my room and stood at the door for a moment staring at me. The look of desire on his magical blue eyes made my skin burn. I turned away immediately to stop him from realizing how much his allure was affecting me.
“So are you just going to stare at me like some artwork or a trophy?” I asked, throwing my hands in the air dramatically.
“I can't take my eyes off you,” he said softly. His voice tickled my flesh making me flinch.
“Not like you want me to stop staring either,” he added and smirked.
I frowned in an attempt to cover up my blush. I tilted my head forward a bit and stared into his eyes. Thankfully, his aura wasn't hovering around him this time so I felt less intimidated by him. He was handsome if I was being honest but that didn't matter. He was the enemy.
“Your desire towards me disgusts me,” I said, rolling my eyes at him.
He chuckled. “I'd love to hear you repeat that sentence under a more pleasurable situation,” he smirked.
I shook my head and sucked my teeth. Realizing there is no other way to get the pervert to stop looking at me. He didn't look like he was going to step away from the door any moment.
“Alpha Declan,” I heard a voice call out behind him.
He turned around. “What’s the matter? Can't you see I'm in the middle of something?” He asked in an irritated tone.
“I'm so sorry, Alpha, but there is something that requires your urgent attention,” a man's voice said.
“It can wait. I'm busy with my mate,” he said and turned to face me, dismissing the man.
“You should go, I don't need your help anyway,” I said, sarcasm dripping in my voice. “You're being a nuisance standing there staring at me like that."
“I am not leaving you alone. Shut up and quit trying to convince me otherwise.” He growled.
“Suit yourself." I sighed, fed up with his nonsense. He was the most stubborn and annoying man I'd ever known and I haven't known him for more than a day.
He turned as the voice called out to him in an apologetic tone. He growled, irritated at the request.
“I'll be back,” he said and stepped out of the room.
Finally, I sighed, glad that he was gone. I walked to the doorway to shut the door when a well-pedicured foot got in the way.
“You must be the mate,” I heard a soft voice say from outside the door.
I opened the door a crack to see a lady standing with her arms crossed. She was dressed elegantly with jewelries adorning her.
She looked at me with a flicker of disgust in her eyes.
What's with her? She barely knows me so why is she looking at me that way?
I furrowed my brows.
