Lyra's POV
The sound of glass shattering filled my ears as a slap landed on my face. "You're good for nothing, a waste of space." A masculine voice thundered, and tears filled my eyes. "I asked for a margarita, not this nonsense you brought in front of me."
I fell on my knees as quickly as I could to apologize to him. Alpha Connor had the worst temper, and he found a way to make it his daily mission to vent his anger on me on a daily basis.
"I am so sorry, my alpha. I… I will clean it up."
"You are nothing but a useless being; get out of my sight." He barked, and I hurriedly rushed out of the room, closing the door behind me before sliding down to the floor with a sigh.
Alpha Connor and his Luna Maia have been my guardians since I was a little child, and for no reason at all, they just hated me.
Tears rolled down my eyes as I forced myself up and walked back to the kitchen to remake what he requested. As I walked into the kitchen, I heard some maids giggling and whispering as they went on with their chores.
"The mating ceremony is this weekend. I can't wait to see who my mate is." The first girl said to another, and then it hit me that it was time for the mating ceremony.
The mating ceremony happens every two years, and it was done the last two years before I got my wolf, and now I haven't even found my mate despite the year gap. Who would even want a weak omega like me in the first place?
A sigh escaped my lips as I did my chores. I returned to my room and started looking for what to wear for the ceremony. At least if I found my mate, my mate could be my ticket out of this hell of a house once and for all.
"Lyra." I heard a loud shriek from downstairs, and I rushed down to Casey's room, where she was standing in the pile of clothes with her face red with rage.
"You called for me."
"I told you to prepare my dress for the mating ceremony for me to choose from. Am I supposed to do that by myself? You cannot be in my uncle's house and do nothing while you are being fed and housed for free." Casey shouted, and I tried my best not to react in any way that would make her add more to the current misery she was giving me.
"I am very sorry, ma'am. I will get your dresses sorted out and pick the suitable ones." I bowed my head, and she scoffed.
"I do not wear the same clothes twice, you mutt. You go to the mall and get me a set of new dresses, and please do not dress hideously." She rolled her eyes and walked past me, pushing me out of the way like she didn't see me there.
Casey was the spoiled and rotten niece of Alpha Connor, and she had made it her life's mission to make my life hell like her uncle was already doing with his Luna. I knew I only had a few days left before I finally got freed from the life of hell they were putting me through.
I did as she asked, and the day continued with her trying to choke me with work until the day of the mating ceremony.
"Do not tell me you are going to the mating ceremony." Casey scoffed as she walked down the stairs to meet Alpha Connor and Maia, where they were standing, waiting for her.
They were to be hosting the mating ceremony, but they decided to make it open to the public outside the palace, which I knew was only for a particular reason. Alpha Connor was a very partial man who divided class, so he wouldn't want omegas and other low-ranked wolves coming into his palace.
"She is part of the pack, so I guess she should go to the ceremony." He replied, and the driver drove us all to the hall. For the first time, I didn't feel like I was trapped in a whole large palace, having to do all the chores along with some other maids.
Everyone in the hall seemed to be happily conversing with each other, and I just stood near a corner, scanning the whole room.
"Do you think our mate is here?" My wolf asked in her low and thin voice.
"I hope so. I can't wait to meet him; maybe he will. If I get my mate, there is no way I won't leave that palace." I replied to my wolf as I picked up a glass of juice to drink, as I watched everyone start to mingle.
Suddenly, a strong scent of fragrant wood and roses hit my nostrils. It was intoxicating, and at the same time, it was heart-melting. My heart hammered against my chest as I set my eyes on a chestnut-haired man who looked like a Greek god.
I could feel butterflies in my tummy as he turned to look at me, and I blushed a little. The look on his face was one of confusion, another expression I couldn't explain. He walked towards me and stood a few inches away from me.
I recognized him; he was one of those powerful alphas who had been attending the mating ceremony for years now.
"Mate." His wolf called out in sync with mine, and my heart erupted with joy.
I don't know how he was feeling on the inside, but deep down, I hoped a powerfully looking man like him would not reject me. "You're Lyra." He said, and I nodded gently and nervously.
"How do you know my name?" I asked, slightly surprised.
Slowly, his expression changed to that of irritation.
"After all these years of waiting, and I am given a weak omega? I reject you, Lyra."
