Alright, first question: Never have I ever had a huge disagreement with my man,” Brian said.
I sighed in relief. Easy.
“Never,” I said, giving a small, nervous laugh.
Brian nodded, as though he was expecting my answer. “Never have I ever lied to my groom-to-be.”
I raised an eyebrow. Hmm, tricky, but okay. “Never,” I answered again.
The crowd started getting louder, though. “The questions are too easy! We need something juicier!”
Brian’s grin widened like a Cheshire cat. “Alright, alright, the crowd has spoken!”
I felt my stomach do a flip. This was going downhill fast.
“Never have I ever… had s*x with my groom!” Brian shouted with a wicked gleam in his eye.
I froze. What the hell?! My cheeks turned bright red. I wasn’t about to talk about my s*x life in a pub full of people, but I couldn’t just skip this one, could I?
I looked at the girls desperately for help, but they were already cackling.
“C-can I pass?” I stammered, feeling the heat rise in my cheeks.
There were loud boos from the crowd, but I stood my ground. I’m not going to do this.
“Sure, you can pass,” Brian said, voice smooth and teasing, “but that’s gonna cost you!”
“And what’s the penalty?” he asked the crowd.
“Tequila shots!” someone yelled.
“Three tequila shots!” another person shouted.
Brian nodded. “Three it is!”
I groaned inwardly. Of course it’s tequila. Of course it is.
“Without lemon!” the crowd shouted in unison.
A waiter appeared with the tray of shots, and I could already feel the burn in my throat before I even touched them.
“Bottoms up!” Brian cheered, and the crowd roared. My friends were the loudest, egging me on.
I quickly downed the three shots, feeling the heat surge through me. I was definitely feeling buzzed now, but I still had to get through the game.
“Alright, the next round of questions!” Brian continued, almost too happy about my misery. “This time, we’re getting questions from your friends!”
By the end of that round, I was pretty much drunk, and my so-called friends had asked me about everything from threesomes to the last time I’d gotten intimate with Jonathan. I wanted to crawl into a hole. I was so done with them.
“Alright, ladies and gentlemen, we’ve officially wasted our bride-to-be!” Brian laughed. “Any last takers? Who wants to ask a question from the crowd?”
A girl in a mini skirt and crop top stood up, and the crowd quieted to hear her.
“I’ve got a question,” she said, sounding a little nervous. “I’ve been dating this guy for four years, and I want him to meet my parents, but he’s always making excuses. I love him, and I don’t want to give up on him. How did you get your groom to meet your parents?”
I paused, that was a tough one.
I took the mic, feeling like I might pass out from the tequila, but I pushed through. “To be honest, my groom has never met my parents.”
The crowd gasped in unison.
“But let me explain,” I continued, trying to keep my voice steady. “We met on a cruise over a year ago. It was amazing, but we didn’t exchange numbers. I thought that was it. Then, one day, he reached out to me on i********:. Said he’d been looking for me since that cruise, and he didn’t have much to go on—just my name and the fact that I was at a work expo.”
I smiled, recalling that moment. “When he found me, I was impressed. We started dating after that, but in the six months since, we’ve tried to meet each other’s families, but our schedules never aligned. So, I told him, ‘It’s fine, don’t worry about it. My family understands.’ We don’t let that kind of stuff stress us out.”
The crowd was listening now, quiet and intrigued.
“You see, sometimes you just have to make your own choices. No one should feel pressured, not even over something as big as meeting the parents. If you’re in love, you’ll find a way. The perfect timing for them to meet, will present itself, at least, that's what i told him.”
I felt a little proud of myself as the crowd nodded in agreement. I wasn’t going to let old traditions stress me out.
The girl asked, “So when will the right time be, if you’re getting married tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow,” I smiled. “At the wedding. My parents will meet him then, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
The crowd applauded, and I couldn’t help but feel relieved that I’d just gotten through the most serious question of the night.
The girl gave me a thumbs up. “Your groom’s lucky to have you.”
“Maybe,” I said, laughing to myself. I wasn’t sure what made me luckier, but I was sure we were both lucky to have found each other.
