I walked down the stairs towards the kitchen, it was still really early and the only ones that would be up is the warriors, They start their training at 5:15 every morning, then they go out and do their training and come back in at around 6:30. Breakfast starts at 7:15am and the other omegas come into the kitchen at 5:30am, it’s rare that I’m not up early, so I make a start on the breakfast.
I start by taking the bits out the fridge; bacon, sausage, eggs, mushrooms and butter and place them on the side. I then move to the cabinets and grab the other items. For a change, I decided to make some muffins too, I always have time anyway. I turn on the oven and get the mixing unit ready for use, I place the flour, eggs, milk and sugar into the large mixing bowl. I turn the dial to number 6 and fetched the muffin tins out the utensil cabinet.
The scent hit me again. Faint but still apparent. It was almost like fresh pine with a hint of cinnamon, almost Christmassy.
Star arose in my head.
“Where is that smell from? It’s so sweet. My mouth is watering here.” She said. I could see her in my mind her tail wagging and licking her lips.
“Oh Star. What has gotten into you?” I replied to her shaking my head. I took a quick look around to see if I could see anyone. I glanced at the time again 5:15, “I best get a shift on if I want to get plenty of muffins done.” I said to myself. I pulled all 6 trays out the pantry and walked back to the counter.
I turned off the mixer and lifted the head out so I could take the bowl out. The mixture looked perfectly mixed and I scooped out enough to fill 36 muffin cases, I realised I would need to mix another batch in order to fill all the trays. I placed all the same ingredients into the mixer again but this time I fancied adding something. I walked over to the spice cabinet and grabbed the cinnamon spice. I added a small amount and started the mixer going. I put the oven on and placed the first 3 trays in and got the next 3 trays ready for the mixture.
After I had put the second batch in the oven to cook I started washing all the items I had used and clearing away the ingredients too. I took the first batch out and placed them on the wire racks to cool. The other omegas had started to come into the kitchen to prepare the main breakfast.
“What is that divine smell.” Chloe asked as she entered the kitchen. She was the head cook and had always liked and complimented my baking. She particularly liked my pancakes and muffins. I had one ready for her and a mug of coffee, when she looked over and saw me holding them she smiled her friendly smile. I was always welcome where she was.
I took the cinnamon muffins out the oven just in time for the warriors to invade through the kitchen heading to training, they were a little late this morning. They all took a deep sniff of the air as they passed and Arron even tried to take a muffin off the wire racks. This earned him a slap on the wrist by Chloe.
“Get your mitts off Mr Wood!” You know you are in trouble when Chloe uses your last name. He grinned a toothy smile and ran out the door rapidly.
“God that young Beta is going to be a handful when they all take over!” She said shaking her head and turning back to face her station. This action made her hair swing slightly. She always had it tied back and then plaited. In fact I can’t ever recall a day she had it loose.
“When did they get back? I didn’t think that the young alpha, Beta and gamma were back until next weekend?” I asked. I know I wasn’t high up the ranks but we were normally informed of things like that as we always cooked and cleaned so we like to know the numbers we are catering for.
“Oh they came back late last night dear, Apparently there were problems at the Alpha school so it was decided that all the young Alphas and gangs would go home.” Chloe replied, not even looking up from her work station. She was busy mixing up eggs for the scrambled eggs.
“I heard that rouges attacked the school.” Clair stated.
“I heard it was because of vampires.” Sophie said.
“Well less of the gossip girls, I am quite sure we will be informed if it is required.” Chloe snapped firmly. “Please will you continue with the breakfast girls” she added. Chloe didn’t mind the talking as long as the work was done. If we were late with breakfast she would be punished. I made a start on the mushrooms and bacon. We would normally cater for about 60 people breakfast, lunch and dinner. This pack housed over 500 people but we only cater for who live in the main pack house, including the inmates warriors, and they could eat. The rest of the pack lived out in their own houses with their own family’s.
We all got on with our jobs and as things were being finished off some of the omegas had started to take the food out to the food bar. Everyone collected what they wanted for breakfast rather than being served, just as we were taking some of the final plates out to the dining room the warriors had started to back from training. We still had to take the eggs and toast to the food bar and the muffins would be taken out too. The Alpha and Luna came into the dining room as I walked out with the last of the muffins in my hands. There was a total of 70 muffins. I was sure I had counted 72 originally and gave Chloe one but another had vanished. I bet it was Arron. He was a practical joker kind of Beta. I wish I could be the real me here not hidden.”you and me both” star Added in. “life could be much more fun for us if we weren’t passing off as lowly Omegas.” She added. Spitting the last few words.
“Star, you know why we have to hide our identity’s. Our pack was wiped out except us and Jake.” I told her. I know she didn’t like being an omega but she made out it was hell. It wasn’t that bad. Yeah I wasn’t living like an Alpha but it was better than being rouge or even worse dead.
“Those smell amazing Lauren. Where on earth did you learn to bake like that?” Luna asked me.
“I just read all the baking books in the school you let me attend.” I replied with a smile.
“You need to teach some of the others then, their baking is nothing like yours.” She said in return. With that comment she took a plate and began getting herself some food. I took my leave and headed back to the kitchen to tidy up and eat my own breakfast with the other omegas.
After we had all eaten and the main breakfast rush was done in the dining room it was time to clear the pots away. Myself and two other young girls were washing the pots as 3 others went into the dining room to collect them This job took around two hours till everyone had been down and eaten. There were still a few stragglers but the remaining food would stay on the heated bar till around 10am, after which time we cleared away the last of the food and pots. Anything after that would have to be taken to the kitchen and cleaned around lunch by the lunch time staff.
I had lunch off most days but would need to be back in the kitchen to help with dinner. That shift started at 4:30pm and normally lasted till 8pm. Most of the time I headed up to my room for a few hours. I would read one of the books I have from the library or go out into the territory for a walk. Today I decided to go to the little stream that I like to sit by and draw. It was a peaceful spot and not many knew of its location. I only discovered it by accident a few years ago.
