Mate

Diana’s POV It’s been hours but we kept on running even though we could feel the tiredness seeping through our bones. I didn’t know if Jack and the Crimson pack were chasing us but I knew that we had put considerable distance between us but they could be right on our heels, and the desire never to get caught only spurred us on. “How haven’t we broken down yet, mother?” I feel tired but I can’t seem to bring myself to slow down. I asked her, unsure about what was going on. “I don’t know,” She replied. She was equally perplexed as well. “I don’t feel as easily tired as I used to back then, I’m getting stronger and faster. What if it’s because we left and severed our bonds to the pack? There’s no other explanation for this burst of energy.” I nodded and continued running, pushing myself to the limit. I was scared of what Jack would do if he ever found us so I had to run. “I can’t run any further, my limbs are sore and I’m thirsty,” My mother said, suddenly coming to a stop. I couldn’t help but agree, she wasn’t as strong as she was. “There’s a stream not so far away from here, I can hear the running waters,” I said to her. “We would get there in no time, it’s a few miles out.” We continued journeying till we eventually reached the stream. Then we sat down to drink water and rest before we continued our journey. “We’re not safe here. We need to leave here now, what if rouges come to attack us? We would be in danger and I don’t either one of us is strong enough to fight at the moment.” I was worried about stopping for a long time in an unfamiliar environment. We would be greatly exposed and outnumbered if they attacked in a pack. “You’re right. We can’t stay here any longer.” My mother agreed with me as she stood up and we began running again, not knowing where they were headed or what they would encounter ahead but they were heading towards the moon as it led them onward. The night got darker despite the moon shining brightly above us as we ran and we had all begun to feel tired. I could hear my mother’s labored breathing, she was finding it difficult to keep up and I felt pity for her. We continued for a few more minutes before we came across a clearing. “We need to stop and rest here for the night,” My mother began. “I don’t think we can go any further, my wolf might collapse on us and I might as well join her.” I agreed instantly. “My wolf is so tired. We can’t continue to punish her. We can continue in a few hours, I need to rest as well before I break down.” We dropped our stuff and didn’t bother to shift back into human form, in in case of the possibility of an attack. We were out in the open, it was best to remain in attack mode if need be. Tired, we fell under a tree and decided to call it a night and resume in a few hours. We were about to fall asleep when we heard the bushes rustle and I could feel my wolf’s excitement begin to build much to my annoyance. What the hell could be exciting about the possibility of getting attacked by whatever was behind those bushes, my wolf was in no shape to fight whatsoever and neither was I. Get a grip of yourself, Nyx. I growled. We could be under attack and I need you to focus. You have to protect all of us at all costs. The rustling grew more noisy as it came even closer to where we lay. I stood up immediately, my eyes fixed on the bushes as they shook violently from side to side. “What the hell is behind there, mum?” I was starting to get worried. “I have no idea, Diana.” My mother confessed. Out of the bushes, six huge wolves jumped out and surrounded us in a half circle. There was no way to escape, we were surrounded. They weren’t rogues, I could figure that out immediately. They looked different, there was an air of authority around them. They looked like trained pack warriors and they were twice our size. They looked at us ferociously as they snarled. “What are we going to do?” I asked my mother, practically clueless. “We can’t possibly outrun them by any stretch of our imagination. We need to come up with something fast.” “I don’t know what to do, they look like they’re out to kill and we’re at an obvious disadvantage.” My mother replied, moving back slowly, trying to shield me from them, and right then, my wolf caught the scent of something that sent her into a frenzy. It was the most alluring scent I had ever experienced. It serenaded me instantly, filling me up with its heavenly smell. I tried to decipher the smell, it smelt woody, like pinecones with a drop of lavender. I didn’t know how to properly describe it accurately. I was simply lost in it and it was just so unique. A huge black wolf jumped out from behind the bushes and landed in front of us, lodging himself between us and the warriors. He was the biggest wolf I’ve ever seen, he made the other wolves feel so small compared to its size. The wolf looked so majestic and surreal at the same time as his black fur shone brightly under the bright moonlight. Slowly, the wolf turned its gaze towards us, and I found myself staring into its gleaming black eyes for that moment, it seemed like the world stopped for a moment as I lost in the emotions coursing through my body at that moment, the silence seemed to stretch on for seconds and then my mother said something I never expected to ever hear again. Mate.
