CHAPTER THREE
“Careful, you stupid cow.” Caroline shrieked as the tray of drinks I had been carrying fell into the air and soaked her dress. It was as if time was in slow motion. I could not believe what had happened, and I felt my cheeks burn bed with humiliation and all eyes boring into me. Whispers and looks of disgust.
“Caroline, I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to. I will clean it up at once.” I fell to my knees and started to dab the wetness and pick up shards of glass with my bare fingers.
“Look what she did; she did it on purpose,” Elisha exclaimed, causing more of a scene than was necessary. I felt awful, and I knew it was not my fault since I was sure that Elisha had tripped me up, knowing I would fall into Caroline. I was going to be punished for that when everyone had gone. I wanted to cry and run away, but I couldn’t do anything other than apologise profusely for the mess.
“Caroline, I’m sure it was only an accident.” Luna Maggy sighed, rushing over to help us. I kept my eyes on the floor, knowing it was all just an act. The alpha and the luna wanted everyone to believe we were some perfect pack family and treated fairly. That’s why we were allowed to shower and wear our best clothes.
“I am so sorry,” I repeated for the millionth time. Luna Maggy threw me a look that at once silenced me. “Go and fetch more drinks, Beatrice.” She whispered, and I instantly rushed off to the kitchen.
“Excuse me, what was that all about?” I heard a deep voice boom from across the room as I were about to enter with more drinks. My eyes fell on the most handsome man I had ever seen. He was tall, muscular and dressed in a black suit and white shirt with a black and white striped tie. His piercing blue eyes cut through me and sent shivers down my spine in a way I had never experienced before.
“Nothing to worry about, Sir Marcus. It's just a little accident. Our omega was not watching where she was going.” Luna Maggy said firmly.
So, his name was Marcus. I could not take my eyes off him; I felt drawn to him but forced myself to look away and get on with my job since I knew that I was already in a lot of trouble. Caroline sulked when she saw me and stomped off with her sister running after her.
“I think you should go and help my daughter change into another outfit.” Beta Gina glared at me as I placed the tray of drinks carefully onto the table. “There are a lot of eyes watching us tonight, and I don’t think you should be out here.” She continued to say.
“Of course, I will go straight away.” I bowed and headed off to help Caroline. I was nervous to face her out of the guests' prying eyes.
“What do you want, you stupid b***h. Are you crazy?” Elisha yelled when she opened the door to see me standing there.
“I was told to come and help Caroline. I am sorry.” I mumbled, trying not to irritate her. She glared at me before pulling my hair and dragging me into the bedroom. As she was about to shut the door, a loud growl echoed behind us, and I was pulled into the arms of a stranger. Caroline and Elisha gasped in disbelief as they stepped back.
“Sir Marcus,” Caroline said.
“I saw what you did to this young female. You tripped her and caused this on purpose. What are you? Crazy? Is this how this pack works? To abuse their pack like this?” He shouted.
“What is going on?” Alpha Zander came running into the bedroom with a look of horror as the realisation dawned on him.
“Is this how you run your pack? Abusing your lower-ranking members?” Marcus was seething with anger as he held me close to him. His heartbeat had a calming effect on me. I did not want him to let me go.
I was in shock. This mysterious man, Marcus, had come to my defence without even knowing me. His presence was intimidating and comforting at the same time. I felt a sense of protection and safety that I had never experienced before. But I knew that his actions would bring consequences, especially standing up to the alpha and Luna of the pack.
Alpha Zander and Luna Maggy looked stunned at Marcus's accusation. They were at a loss for words, not knowing how to respond to this unexpected turn of events. The tension in the room was palpable as Alpha Zander finally spoke up, trying to diffuse the situation.
"Marcus, I assure you that we do not condone any form of abuse in our pack. This was just a misunderstanding," Alpha Zander tried to explain, but Marcus was not having it.
"I saw what happened with my own eyes. This young woman was mistreated, and I will not stand idly by and watch it happen. I may not be a part of your pack, but I will not tolerate such behaviour," Marcus stated firmly, his gaze unwavering.
Luna Maggy stepped forward, trying to regain control of the situation. "Please, Marcus, we will handle this internally. There is no need for outsiders to interfere," she pleaded, her voice tinged with fear.
But Marcus stood his ground, his presence commanding respect. "I will not leave until I am satisfied that justice is served," he declared, his voice leaving no room for argument.
Alpha Zander exchanged a look with Luna Maggy before nodding reluctantly. "Very well, Marcus. We will investigate this matter further. Beatrice, you are dismissed for the evening. Marcus, I would appreciate it if you would join us for a discussion in the main hall," Alpha Zander said, his tone indicating that he had no other choice.
And just like that, I found myself standing next to Marcus, feeling a mix of gratitude and confusion. Who was this man, and why did he feel compelled to protect someone he didn't even know? As we returned to the main hall, I couldn't help but wonder what the night had in store for me. Marcus was a mystery, but one thing was sure – he had changed the course of this evening in ways I could have never imagined.
“Alpha Zander, please, it wasn't like that.” Elisha tried to talk her way out of it, but he gave her a look I had never seen him do before. I remained silent as Marcus kept hold of me.
“With all due respect, I think I will be leaving, and she will be coming with me,” Marcus said, and his words sent a shiver of excitement down my spine.
