CHAPTER TWO
My mother was adamant that I needed to find my mate, a Luna, for our pack. It wasn’t something that I saw the point of. I was strong and able to manage anything on my own. My father had taught me well. He died in a horrible hunting accident only one year ago. I did not want a mate, even before my father had passed away. I only agreed to come to this stupid ball to keep my mother happy. It was the first that she had smiled in a long time. Standing there admiring me in my suit and tie, she kept telling me how much I reminded her of my father, and she was confident that he would be proud of me. I knew he would be, too, but I preferred to spend my time riding my motorcycle and enjoying my life. Why did I need to settle down so quickly? I had plenty of time for that. I was nineteen years old, and I had my whole life ahead of me.
And so here I was.
Elite was a spacious place hidden in the middle of nowhere with top security, and they were powerful and richer than most. I felt a little out of place as my driver slowly pulled up outside the elite mansion, where we were greeted by a long line of what I could only assume to be servants. I caught sight of the Luna Maggie and Alpha Zander beaming down at me from the top of the steps. I readjusted my tie and sighed. I promised myself I would stay for a little while and then leave. I couldn’t be bothered to remain amongst these stuck-up people all evening. Anything to make my mother happy. My phone pinged, and I quickly peered down to see a message from my mother wishing me luck for the evening and another from my best mate, Dwayne. I grinned and shook my head in amusement. Turning my attention back to where I was, I placed my phone in my pocket and walked up the steps, being sure to say hello to everyone. It didn’t matter to me if they were of a high rank or a low rank because my parents had taught me that everyone deserved respect in this world.
“Good evening, Sir Marcus. Good to have you here. Are you alone?” Alpha Zander stepped forward to shake my hand as I reached the top of the steps at last.
“Thank you, alpha Zander, I most certainly am. My mother sends her apologies. She is still not in a good place after the death of my father.” I explained, feeling like I needed to put that out there. Luna Maggy’s face fell as she placed a hand on my shoulder and gave me a look of sympathy. “We are so sorry to hear about George. He was a good one.” Alpha Zander said with a respectful nod. “Please come in. We are glad to have you with us tonight, and we will ensure you are well looked after. This is the daughter of our beta. Elisha and Caroline. They have been very excited to meet you.” I followed their gaze to the two young she-wolves standing before me, but I wasn’t interested in them. Sure, they were pretty, but they looked more like spoilt brats who thought they were entitled. I did not have time for that.
“Thank you for inviting me. I will go through, shall I?” I pointed to the doorway, and they stepped aside, gesturing for me to enter.
“He is handsome. I think he will like me more than you.” I heard one of the girls say to the other, causing me to roll my eyes and only convince myself more that it was a waste of time coming here. Girls like them would never be Luna material, and certainly not for me.
As the evening went on, I was dragged into conversations with various pack members, all trying to get to know me better. I found it exhausting and irritating. However, I kept my composure and maintained a polite demeanour, not wanting to offend anyone. I politely declined any offers to dance, claiming I had a foot injury that prevented me from doing so. It wasn’t entirely a lie; I didn’t feel like dancing with anyone here. I preferred to be alone.
Eventually, I wandered onto the balcony, taking in the cool night air. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to clear my mind of all the noise and chatter inside. I heard footsteps approaching, and I turned to see a familiar face – Dwayne, my best mate.
“Hey, mate, how’s it going?” he greeted me with a grin, clapping me on the back.
“Hey, Dwayne. It’s been a long night,” I replied, leaning against the railing.
“You look like you’re ready to bolt,” he chuckled, knowing me all too well.
“You have no idea,” I said with a smirk. “I can’t wait to get out of here.”
“Well, you know I’m always up for an adventure. Want to sneak out and grab some drinks?” he suggested with a mischievous glint in his eye.
I couldn’t help but smile at the idea. “You read my mind, mate. Let’s do it.”
As I turned my head, I caught sight of those troublesome Beta sisters and felt my nostrils flare in disgust. How could the alpha of this pack allow such brats to wander around like they owned the place? The mere idea of such a thing made me feel sick to my stomach. My mother would be furious if I had bought such a female home to be Luna of my pack. This made me even more certain that I was better off without a mate anyway. However, I had given my mother a promise that I would give this daft party a go. I could not break that promise to my beloved mother. So here goes nothing, I suppose!
“Welcome Sir, would you like a drink?” one of the Elite servants greeted me with a tray of drinks. I gave him a nod and took a drink. The tall glass felt good in my hand as I slowly swished the contents around and considered my next move. I took a moment to take in my surroundings.
The music was loud, the people were chattering away, and the lights were dimmed, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It would have been a great party if it weren’t for the fact that I felt completely out of place.
As I scanned the room, I noticed a figure standing alone in the corner, gazing out at the night sky. She looked lost in her own thoughts, and for a moment, I felt a strange pull towards her. I couldn’t quite explain it, but something about her intrigued me. I decided to make my way over and introduce myself.
But before I could get to her, she turned and I noticed she was carrying a tray in her hands and being extra careful with it. I watched as the two beta sisters were close by and was disgusted by their actions. The girl I felt drawn to crashed to the floor sending the drinks all over the beta sister.
