Chapter 4The dinner was indeed a good, plain meal of hearty stew and homemade bread, and Sébastien slowly relaxed following his unease outside Mathieu’s inn. By the time they finished eating and were on their way back, a good couple of hours had passed and it was already dark. Sébastien walked alongside Henri, paying little attention to the direction they took, but wishing Henri had opted to hire a lamp-bearer. He was tired and really didn’t want to have to watch every darkened corner in case of robbers and pickpockets. As they neared their destination, it seemed Sébastien’s misgivings were unfounded. No one had accosted them, and according to Henri they were nearly back at the inn. Then everything changed as several men rushed them from the shadows. Their attackers were big, brutish me
