My eyes were crushed closed as I laid in the hospital bed. All around me I could hear voices, lots of voices, only they didn't make any sense. They were all whispering. Just whispering. I brought my hand up to my ears and did my best to block out everything but it didn't work.
"Daddy!" I whined. "Make it stop."
The coolness of his hands were felt on my forehead and then the humming of my lullaby began.
"Just relax Renesmee your mother and I are here."
An unfamiliar cough shook me and I jolted. My eyes flew open in shock and I hissed defensively.
"Are you okay Renesmee? I didn't mean to scare you." It was Tyler.
I blinked. Tyler was still here. Wait. He was always here now that I remembered it. I blushed and looked up at my father expecting him to be upset about hanging out with a boy.
"He's a good kid." He murmered low enough so he couldn't hear.
I nodded my head. "He's a good friend." I thought back.
My father smiled and then turned to look at Tyler who tensed up.
"Thank you for what you did for our daughter. She is everything to us."
"No problem Mr. Cullen."
"Call me Edward."
Then Tylers phone began ringing and he quickly answered it. Here came the shouting again. I watched Tyler raise to his feet and step outside the door.
"Dad I'm just at the hospital okay. My friend got sick so I am just making sure she is okay." I heard the jumbled shouting again. "I know its not my responsiblity but I actually care okay. I'll see you when I get home." he must've hung up because there was silence -except the whispers in my head. Then he stepped back inside.
I watched as he took a seat in the chair he had just previously sat in.
My father turned to look at him. "Is everything all right?"
Tyler nodded. "Family problems." He mumbled under his breath before blushing.
My father turned back around and continued humming my lullaby.
"Tyler you don't have to stay here. I'm fine." I told him.
"I don't want to go."
"Honestly, my mother and father are here."
Tyler shrugged. "I'll stay. It's okay."
"Do you need a ride home? We can take you." My mother said as she entered the room. She looked over at my father. "They are finishing up with some papers and then they are going to discharge her."
Tyler's face seemed to grow pained. "Uh I don't know." his voice seemed edgy. What was wrong with him? Was it me?
"Have you called your father Bella?" My father said. "Tell him we might be a little late for dinner."
My eyes flickered up to the clock on the wall. It was only five-thirty in the evening. I thought it was later then that.
"Actually my dad's cruiser has a flat in it and he can't get it fixed until tomorrow so the dinner is cancled." My mother said as she crossed the room and took a seat opposite my father.
Over the next ten minutes my RN came in and gave me my discharge papers. Then we were on our way out the door. I sighed once I breathed in the cool crisp air.
"I'll go and pull up the car." My father said before walking off.
"Wait right here okay Renesmee I need to talk to your father." My mother said before she jogged -human speed- to my fathers side and matched his stride. They disappeared around the corner.
I turned to Tyler and smiled. "Thank you for being there for me. I know I probably seemed like a crazy person today."
He shook his head. "It's alright. You were sick that's all."
We stood in silence for several moments.
"TYLER!" I heard a man shout from across the street.
I saw Tylers eyes grow wide. "Oh no." He gasped before taking my hand and pulling me back. "Come on we need to go now."
I pulled my hand from his grip. What was going on? Who was this man and why was Tyler afraid of him?
I watched the man wait for the traffic across the street to seize before he ran towards us. As his face was illuminated by the bright light of the street lamp I felt my heart speed up. It was Tylers dad.
Drew Hawthorne was coming up quickly and he looked angry. I thought for a second that he was coming towards me but he nudged me out of the way and grabbed Tyler by his shoulder before pushing him up against the wall.
"I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU TO COME HOME BOY!" He shouted, his face inches from Tylers.
"Dad I was busy." Tyler whimpered as he cowered against his fathers touch.
Drew brought his hand up and smacked Tyler's head causing it to bounce against the brick wall behind him. I gasped in shock. He was hurting Tyler.
"DON'T YOU TALK BACK TO ME. YOU KNOW I DIDN'T HAVE TO KEEP YOU BUT I DID. YOU WILL RESPECT ME AND-" He grabbed Tylers chin and pulled his face forward so he was forced to look into his eyes. "-LOOK AT ME WHEN I'M TALKING TO YOU."
"Get off me or I'm going to-"
"GOING TO WHAT!" He smacked Tyler against the head. "ARE YOU GOING TO CALL THE POLICE ON ME?" Drew took a step back and the delivered a right hook against Tylers face.
I watched slowly as Tyler fell to the ground, cupping his hand on his face. Then Drew began kicking him.
I ran forward and grabbed onto Drews arms and began pulling him away.
"Leave him alone he is my friend!" I shouted.
Drew slipped from my grip and pushed me. I stumbled back and fell to the ground. He looked at me and scoffed before he advanced on Tyler again. I crawled as quickly as I could and took a stance before Tyler. My arms were out defensively and my teeth were barred as my breath was coming out so fiercely, it took all my strength and self control to not hiss at him.
"Get out of the way." Drew said to me.
"No!" I growled.
"Get out of the way!" He said again.
I shook my head slowly, not breaking my eye contact.
He reached forward and statched me up. I reached out and grabbed his forearm before squeezing tightly. Then there was a gut-wrenching crack and Drew released me as he began howling in pain.
"Don't touch me again." I hissed.
A car pulled up at the emergency drop off drive through and my father and mother got out. They were quickly at my side and seconds later so were the police.
"Renesmee." My father said as my mother took me into her arms.
Two police officers began asking questions to try and figure out what was happening. Tyler explained his father coming onto the scene and assualting him and then he went on about me trying to protect me and his father trying to harm me. I added modestly about protecting myself and breaking his arm.
"So you are one of those types." The woman police said as she began talking to Drew to get his side of the story. "If your son wanted to he could press charges and you could go away for a very long time."
"Tyler." I whispered. "What are you going to do?"
Tyler looked at his father who shook his head, a sinister glint was in his eyes.
"No charges." He said after a few seconds.
The woman police nodded her head. "Put your hands behind your back sir." he did as she said and then the police read him his miranda rights.
"I thought you weren't taking him to jail?" Tyler said worridly.
"He will be out in two days. Call your mother to come and pick you up." They put Drew in the back seat of the cruiser.
"My mother died when I was kid." He whispered.
"Do you have any friends who can take you home?" the police then asked him.
My mother stepped forward. "We can take him home officer."
The police nodded his head and we were ushered into the car by my father. I slid into the backseat beside Tyler who was shaking. Then we were off.
Ten minutes later we arrived in a shifty looking neighborhood. The houses were uncared for and broken down. When we stopped outside Tyler's house I looked out the window in disbelief. The house was small and shack-like. It's front windows were boarded up and the paint was faded and chipped.
"So I guess I'll see you whenever." Tyler murmered as he opened up the car door. "Mr. and Mrs. Cullen thank you for taking me... to my house." he then closed the door and headed slowly up the pathway.
"Mom we can't just leave him here." I said desperately. "He's my friend."
My father growled. "Not again Renesmee. We don't need to interferre anymore then we have already. This is why we don't get involved. It draws too much attention to us."
I slammed back into my seat and crossed my arms.
"Edward." My mother whispered as she placed her hand on his forearm.
They stared quietly at one another before my father groaned.
"It's not the same as Jennifer, she was a vampire he is a human."
"I WON'T TELL I PROMISE!" I protested. "He won't be safe here. He is my friend."
"Only until we have to leave again Renesmee. Then he will be in the past." My father replied.
"When we have to leave again he will be out on his own. Right now he is just a child." My mother responded.
I smiled to myself. I could always count on my mother to pull a maternal defense.
After another ten minutes of talking about this my father had given in.
I waited happily as my father and mother walked up the path and knocked on the door. When Tyler answered he looked shocked to see that we were still here. I watched them talk to him for several long minutes before Tyler disappeared back into the house.
My parents rejoined me in the car and we sat and waited. Apparently he was packing a few things.
Three minutes and forty-seven seconds later Tyler came out of the house. When he got into the car beside me I smiled.
I was happy, estatic. My first and only friend was going to be living with us for a few days. It would be nice to have my friend around me now that I had one.
After several seconds of attempted conversation we rode in silence. I could tell from Tyler's thoughts that he was still in shock. Moreso he was embarrassed that he didn't really have the best parent let alone a actual home to go to.
"Where are we going?" Tyler asked as we pulled into a private parking garage right at the harbor.
"Home of course." I giggled as I got out of the car and grabbed my bag.
I waited for him while my parents headed down the dock and onto the boat. The boat my family owned was a small yatch. It could sleep nine people comfortably, had a full kitchen, two bathrooms and a upper deck that could hold thirty or so.
As we headed towards the boat Tyler gawked. His thoughts were in awe about the boat. He had never been on one and had always fantasized about the one he would get when he was older.
"So you weren't joking about taking a boat home were you?" He asked me as we climbed onto the boat.
"No I was serious." I chuckled.
We quickly took a seat near the front of the yatch and watched as my father began driving away from the harbor.
For being such a big boat I was shocked at the speed. It cut through the waves effortlessly and in less the twenty minutes we were heading through the hidden path that was our private water driveway.
Tyler was still quiet. He seemed to relax a bit since the incident and his thoughts were cheerful. He was enjoying the ride.
I couldn't wait to get home and show him our house. I was excited to show him my life. Just not the vampire part. That would remain a secret.
