Edward paced around the room unable to sleep the whole night. It was 4 in the morning when Emma woke and went to the kitchen to get some water. As she walked; she heard shuffling in the study making her frown.
What is he doing at this hour?
Hesitating, she knocked on the door to check on him. There was no reply so she pushed the door ajar and peeked inside. Edward stood facing the wide glass window showing the beautiful night sky with the garden in front. It was illuminated giving a pleasant feeling,
Despite of it, Edward stood there in deep thoughts. His hands held back making him appear taller than he was. If he keeps worrying at this speed; he is going to be old quite soon.
Shaking her head, she announced her presence pulling him out of his thoughts.
“Good morning Edward!” she beamed.
Edward was surprised to see her here. More when she greeted him with a ‘good morning’ so he checked his wrist watch and surprisingly, it indeed was morning.
“Oh! a very good morning to you too.” He smiled but it didn’t reach his eyes.
He watched the young brunette who was just 25 and standing with her hands on the doorway. Her oval face with heart shaped lips and big blue eyes were shining. Her perfect hour-glass figure made her not less than a model. She was beautiful in every terms; looks, behavior and manner. She could try anything she wants yet she was here… babysitting?
Why?
He never gave it a thought before unless now after what happened last night. It happened for the second time and now he is worried if she is alone with Tasha; it could’ve gone wrong.
“Emma, can we talk?” He asked as she felt nervous.
“Sure” she tried to be confident but couldn’t help freaking out.
It happens to her. Whenever someone says ‘Can we talk’ she gets edgy.
Reflecting upon in the past days; she wondered has she made some mistake. Is he trying to fire me?
She was really nervous but decided to wait for him to continue. Taking a seat across his desk, she waited for him to continue. He sat there with head held up, regarding where he should start with.
“What do you know about Tasha?” He decided to be direct.
What? That wasn’t what I expected.
Emma felt relaxed and studied him before answering.
“Tasha isn't an ordinary child and requires special care and attention for her growth. She has grown 5 years in just one year and she has some sort of… superpowers?” It sounded more like a question to her ears.
Edward was interested in her description.
“She gets hot and kindles a fire when angered and the opposite when she cries. She is warm and has a beating heart yet she turns… weird at times as that of living dead- devoid of any emotions, cold temperature and dead plain eyes. She is lovely and lively at one moment and radiates cold mist when she becomes someone else. It is as if she is living between two worlds- the ice and the fire… like a vampire and what? Hell-boy…?” She rambled giving out everything she has learnt about the innocent baby.
He leaned forward curiously; doesn’t know how much she knows but is happy that she pays attention.
“She does some unimaginable things… and then… she means a lot to you!” Her eyes finally met his.
His eyebrows rose appreciating her work and she shied away from the intense gaze he had.
“I’m gratified to hear that but now is the time you must know about her because indirectly; it is linked to you too.” He made a serious face as he narrated her past, their relation, her relations and the way they reached here.
She was left into tears before he ended and he was the same as her. He could still remember that pain and hurt he felt on the 27th Jan a year ago.
“I know it doesn’t make sense but every bit of it is true. Now, when she is growing she has become more powerful than before and without the protection and magic she had earlier; she is becoming fatal.” He exhaled before eyeing her.
“It isn't hidden that she can attack you or anyone else. She even tried that but if she didn’t. That doesn’t mean she won’t ever and I don’t want anything to happen to you. I ain't selfish to let you harm in order to take her care.” He gave her a meaningful look.
In her heart, she was dancing. To hear him confess he cares for her, it was all she needed. She ain't sure what it is but she was attracted to him and to the innocent kid who calls her mama at times. She never felt this happiness before; regardless of being aware that she doesn’t want a kid or marry right now, she is unable to contain that happiness when she calls her mama.
She would’ve have long gone but didn’t have a heart to leave this guy who was stressed out over the infant who turned five miraculously and the kid who had no one to take care of. She loves watching her rub those doe-eyes and grin while mumbling ‘good morning’ and become petulant whining for her milk. Who can leave such a cute baby?
Not her!
“I want you to understand the risk involved now and later. Her father isn't any Tom, d**k and Harry and so her. She alone is a big threat to the whole world. So, please give it a thought before deciding to continue. You’re smart, beautiful and young; you needn’t waste your life on us.” He asked her politely.
He hopes she does give it a thought but his last sentence angered her.
Why does he think I am wasting my life? Doesn’t he get it that I actually have a family here.
Her lips quivered in anger and sadness. She lost her family in a mysterious way when she was seventeen and she has faced the trouble of growing up alone. She was away living in a hostel to get better education when she saw the news of a creature attacking their town, wiping it out entirely. For few months she had nightmares about it but later worked hard to earn some and complete her education. She doesn’t want the same thing to happen with this girl.
She knows a girl definitely needs another especially at time of her puberty. She had her mother and she is worried about this girl. She doesn’t want to leave even if that means endangering her life.
“No! I ain't going anywhere.” She declared with authority.
“Atleast think—” Edward was stunned with her confidence but cannot let her take any decision hastily.
“I’ve already told you Edward. I ain't leaving Tasha alone and you… you both need someone who could care for you. I know you may not require anyone but she is a girl; there are things which another female can teach better than a male.” She gave her final word before leaving but was astonished to see a sleeping beauty walking in.
Clutching her teddy in one hand while rubbing her little eyes with the other; Tasha came dragging inside and walked towards Emma without even opening her eyes.
She has recognized that coconut scent as that of her mama. Tasha hugged her legs mumbling ‘good morning mama’ in her sleepy state.
Emma was beaming proudly and squatted to the floor kissing her hair before embracing her. Edward was mesmerized to see their bond. It was divine!
They aren’t related yet Emma was ready to ignore her danger to be around her and he smiled at their pure relationship. The twinkling in Emma’s voice whenever Tasha called her mama didn’t go unnoticed by Edward and it made him respect her all the more.
He stood from his chair and rushed to pick up his princess. Turning around to face Emma, he nodded his head in agreement.
“Okay then, you’ll learn to defend yourself. As long as you can protect yourself, I won’t mind.” He informed her while nuzzling his little princess in her neck.
Emma was delighted to hear this and nodded her head frantically making Edward giggle at her excitement. It reminded him of Tasha. She was the same age and now his attention went on the 5 year old who was giggling because he tickled her still clinging to him.
The air turned cold and the time stopped. They were astonished and watched as the leaves and water stilled giving a picturesque look. The windows fogged ready to form a layer of ice confusing them both. Edward was quick to know what was happening.
He gave Tasha to Emma asking her to hide her soon. He can just pray that things go as per him. He was fidgeting wrecking his brain on anything that can help him against the person who has arrived.
Making sure the lights were turned off, he waited by his side for anyone that dared come.
