Lies! Lies! Lies!

I drove down the winding driveway with the headlights out. Since Kyle linked me and told me a crazy Alpha was looking for me. I tried to remember which way the driver turned in as I came to the road. Once I remembered I turned left. As I sped down the road, I clicked on my lights. I had to be doing about fifteen miles over the speed limit, but I needed to distance myself from there and fast. I drove about thirty minutes before pulling off into a gas station in a small town to buy a pack of Marlboros. I only smoke when I am nervous. The last time I smoked was when my father went missing for a few days. He was out chasing some rogues away and didn’t return right away. My mother went crazy with grief. Turns out he ended up following them out of State and after the second day he linked my mom. I had smoked an entire pack of cigarettes. That was six months ago. To be honest, many wolves smoked cigarettes, in that we do not differ from humans. We had bad habits just like them.  The first thing I noticed as I walked in the door is they had fountain drinks, and my eyes filled with bliss. I loved soda from the fountain; it just tasted better than in the bottle or can. I filled up a large cup with Mountain Dew and made my way towards the counter. “I will take a pack of Marlboro lights please,” I said as I handed the clerk my id. I was used to being carded, but the clerk looked like she didn’t even care. I picked out an orange little bic lighter and placed it on the counter. The clerk rang up my stuff without a single word. I paid for my stuff and walked out the door. So much for the Southern hospitality, I thought. The clerk barely spoke to me. Once I got back to the car, I called  Kyle since I had Melly’s phone. I wanted to make sure she had a ride. I could mind-link him, but I wanted the actual conversation. It would keep my mind off things while I connected the GPS. I wanted to find a back way home, just in case. “Hey Kyle, it’s me, Izzy, I need to make sure Melly has a ride home,” I said when Kyle answered. “Yep, we got it under control. Get as far away as possible; Mr. Big bad Alpha has left and is trying to find your scent.” Kyle said. Shit, I didn’t even know how long this spray stuff worked for.  I couldn’t believe my Mate was a damn Alpha. They didn’t give up easily. They also had money and many wolves at their disposal. “Kyle I need to speak with Melly. How long ago did he leave?” I asked as I took a drag of my cigarette. “About fifteen minutes ago, but Izzy you should mind link Melly, she found her mate, and I don’t know where she is, and her mate is his Beta,” Fuck! I thought as I hit the steering wheel. That complicated things a bit. Who was I kidding it complicated things a lot. “Thanks, Kyle I got to go but I will call back later,” I said before hanging up. I hurriedly searched for an alternate route on the GPS, then pulled out. Fifteen minutes behind wasn’t all that far, especially since I stopped for my damn cigarettes. I mind linked Melly once I was well on my way. “Melly, how long does this stuff last?” I asked. “Only a few hours, but you need to drive fast because he is looking for you. Don’t go back to my house, I am with the beta. I am sorry Izzy he is my mate. Don’t worry though, he doesn’t even know I know you.” She answered back hurriedly. “Ok, Melly I will link up later” I would just have to spray some more of it on me when I got closer to home. It’s not like he can follow my scent, anyway. My scent was back in the bathroom. As long as I could keep far away until I could spray more I would be fine. I was finally back in my town. I looked at the clock; it was only 11 pm. My parents wouldn’t expect me home for a few more hours. I called Rachel to see what she was doing. I pulled into the Steak N Shake and parked the car. Rachel answered after about 3 rings. “Hey Rach, what are you up to tonight?” I asked. “Is that you, Izzy, I didn’t recognize the number?” Rachel asked me. “Oh yea sorry, I left my phone at home,” I said. “Well, we are at Brian’s; remember he is throwing that party tonight. You should come over.” She said. “I am in a big puffy gown,” I glanced down at my dress. “Oh, what the hell, I will be right over,” I added. I am sure they would tease me, but it would all be in good fun. Brian lived about five minutes from the Steak N Shake. I sprayed the magic stuff on me as best as I could and headed towards Brian’s. The party was booming. I could hear the music from the street. Brian threw great parties since his neighbors worked the night shift. They didn’t care too much. He lived on the outskirts of our small little town, and the houses were further apart than in the city. So he didn’t have very many neighbors. Teenagers were standing around everywhere. I could see a slight commotion on the side of his house. As I walked up to see what was going on I’m surprised by what I see. There sat Brain on top of his tractor singing “She Thinks My Tractors Sexy.” I rolled my eyes. That song was so old. I didn’t listen to much Country music, but I knew the song. “Anyone would think the tractor was sexy, I mean look at it. Now the driver...” I said teasingly. “Izzy! I thought you had some fancy ball to go to with your parents.” Brian jumped down off the tractor and walked towards me grinning from ear to ear. Most people didn’t know, but Brian was my first kiss. We were in kindergarten when it happened. After he kissed me he ran off screaming “Ew girls” He was the one who kissed me first. I never forgot it, and he always teased me about it. “Yeah well, I snuck out. I couldn’t miss your party now, could I?” I asked him teasingly. “Let’s go inside and put that ball gown to use.” He grabbed my hand and pulled me along. On the way in everyone asked me about my dress, but Brian only answered them saying" Cinderella fled the ball to find her real Prince Charming" It always got laughs when he said it. Ironically, he wasn’t far from the truth. “So My Dear Cinderella may I have this dance?” He asked as Adele’s song, ‘Make You Feel My Love,’ came on. I felt like a real princess swirling around in my dress. I guess it wouldn’t go to waste either. As we swayed back and forth, I laid my head on his shoulder. I liked Brian, even though we teased each other, he was always there for me.  Brian was your typical bad boy, I guess you could say. He didn’t break the law really, but he did exactly what he wanted and when he wanted. He had blond hair that hung loose to his shoulders. His eyes were Ice Blue, and as he held me to him I could feel his rock hard abs against me. The downside to Brian, and it was the primary reason I never considered dating him, He’s a ladies man. He isn’t a player, but the women fell all over him. He never really stayed with them for too long either. “Have you been smoking again?” Brian whispered in my ear as he turned me around on his living room floor. “I had a few,” I answered him back. The song ended, and I pulled away, but he held my hand in his. A girl I had seen him with lately came up and stared at him like she wanted to cut his manhood off. I almost laughed. “What’s wrong?” he asked, ignoring the girl. “Nothing’s wrong Brian, Can’t a girl just enjoy a cigarette without being questioned, Geez, it’s not like I was smoking weed or something,” I said as I tried to pull away again. “Come on Izzy, you rarely ever smoke cigarettes unless something is wrong. I know you and you’re lying.” Brian said. “Is something wrong?” Rachel said as she walked up to us. Thank God. I’m saved. Brian and Rachel never got along, ever since she put hair dye in his shampoo last year.  She got upset when he was kissing some girl at his party. Brian had been dating Charlotte, one of our good friends. When Charlotte went heartbroken crying to Rachel, well she exacted her revenge. I tried to tell Charlotte he wasn’t the settling down type, but she didn’t care. I thought it was funny when Brian came to school with puke green hair, though. “Rachel, this is between us, do you mind? We were having a private conversation.” Brian crossed his hands over each other, ready for a stare-down with her. “Actually Brian, it’s not so private, you have company anyway.” Rachel said as she pulled me away. We walked towards the kitchen when she grabbed a beer. “You want one?” “No,” I said. I didn’t drink too much, and since I was driving home, I didn’t think it was a good idea. I heard moaning noises and turned around to see what it was. There, standing up against the fridge was some girl half-naked practically getting it on. “Don’t you have some decency? This is a kitchen, you know where people eat.” I spat at them before pulling Rachel out the back door. “So what was Brian’s problem?” She asked before taking a sip of her beer. We were sitting on the swings in his backyard. Brian’s backyard had an old swing set his father built when he was younger. It was still sturdy, even after all the years. His father built houses for a living, so I guess that’s why the clubhouse and swing set he built were still sturdy. We always used to joke that Brian’s kids would use them someday. Brian always said it would rot away by the time he settled down. He was probably right. Unfortunately, Brian’s father had been long gone. “Brian smelled smoke on me and wanted to know why I was smoking.” I finally answered her. “Izzy it’s no secret you only smoke when you’re upset, or super stressed. What’s going on?” She asked as she stopped her swing. “I can’t talk about it here,” I said, making my swing go higher and higher. “Then let’s find someplace you can.” She said as she grabbed the chains of my swing, making it come to an abrupt stop. Rachel has been my friend for seven years now. She was the only human that knew my secret, that I was a werewolf. Last year her Aunt Violet and her husband Leo came to visit her, and he’s a werewolf, like me. Violet is human.  They decided that since we were such good friends, that maybe she could know my secret, and Leo’s. Leo petitioned his Alpha and mine to tell her the truth. His Alpha agreed immediately, but Alpha Stevens, my Alpha, took a while longer to decide. We rarely tell humans, but Rachel’s mother was sick, and between staying with her Aunt in summers and with me during the school year it got complicated hiding the truth from her. Eventually, he agreed. Her mother is better now, though. So she stays with her now. It was nice having someone who wasn’t a part of the pack to talk to.  We went up to Brian’s clubhouse. It had been years since I had been here. It looked the same. There were beanbags set up in the corner and a mini-fridge. The inside walls are midnight blue, Brian’s favorite color. I could still remember the day we painted it. That was when Brian and Rachel were still close. They hated each other now. He still invited her to his parties, because well, she would just come anyway. Rachel didn’t put up with anyone’s s**t. “So we are all alone now.” She giggled as she opened up his mini-fridge, releasing a moldy smell. I guess Brian hadn’t been here lately. “Well, I had to go to that dance, you know, to meet my mate, and let’s just say It ended up with me in a bathroom hiding then frantically driving away to get away from him,” I said “Was he hot?” She asked me, laughing. “I didn’t even see him; I learned he is an Alpha. This only means he is an egotistical, testosterone-filled asshole, no doubt. I just think it’s stupid. You should have seen all the girls, Rachel; they were like love at first sight, falling all over the guys!” I exclaimed, rolling my eyes. She began fumbling in her purse and pulled out a small bottle. She took a swig and passed it to me. I took a drink without thinking, as I felt the burn in my throat. “What is this s**t?” I asked. “Just a little bottle I took from inside, its vodka. Come on, a little alcohol will not make you drunk.” She laughed. Alcohol affected us just like humans; sure some of us could drink more before getting drunk, but not all of us. The humans were the same in that aspect. Rachel, however, assumed I could drink like a fish and not get drunk. It made me laugh every time. I downed the little bottle that equaled about three shots. I knew my limit, and that was it. Rachel only smiled. She wasn’t an alcoholic she didn’t drink often just at parties sometimes. “So he didn’t find you. I thought they could smell your scent or something?” she asked me. I debated rather to tell her about the magic perfume Melly got from the witch. Humans know witches exist, so I decided it’s ok to tell her. “I used magic perfume a witch made to mask my scent from him,” I answered her back. “Leo says you can’t run from the mate bond, not even a human can. I don’t know how you think you will.” She stated. No one despised the mate bond more than me. They would not force me to love anyone. Besides, he’s gone now and doesn’t know where I live. So I win. Looking at Melly’s phone, I saw it was almost 1 a.m. It was time for me to put my plan into action. I snuck in and tiptoed up to my room. I was almost there, just a few steps more. As I made it to the top step, the light switched on. They would wait, I thought they were all too eager to make sure their daughter found her mate. “Hey, hun. Your home a little early, did you have fun?” My mother asked. She was standing in her pink bathrobe. My mother loved pink. Her dark hair was in a messy bun on top of her head. “Yea mom it was fun. It’s after one in the morning. I didn’t want to miss my curfew.” I said as I continued to walk towards my room. “Did you find your mate?” She asked excitedly. Here goes, time to put on my best sad face. I turned towards my mother and said as sad as I could, “No mom.” I even lowered my head for good measure. “I think I just want to go to bed, goodnight,” I said as I went into my room. Thankfully, she did not follow.
