Magic and An Escape
Isabella POV
I Never really understood why we held the dance on Samhain, just that they believed that you would find your spouse on that day or in our case your mate. Samhain was the Irish New Year, but we didn’t live in Ireland. Many packs around the world held their annual dance or ball on this day. It was a custom for many to travel to other dances, looking for their mate. I couldn’t care less, really. Sure, I respected our pack rules and way of life, but with mates, I believe we should fall in love like humans do. It was all so superficial, anyway. I knew many happy humans who didn’t have to worry about mates, they just fell in love the old-fashioned way.
“Excuse me, but how much longer until we are there?” I asked the driver, my escort, to the dance. We had been driving for over thirty minutes. They held the dance in different areas every year, around the State.
“About fifteen more minutes,” He answered me back.
I realized I didn’t even know his name, not like it mattered, he was only driving me there. I had to drive by myself since I was the betas daughter. My friends all drove together. Normally the Alpha’s son would drive with us, but he had found his mate already. He would be there, but he would have driven up with his mate. It was also the biggest party of the year for our kind.
As I gazed out the window, I could tell we were getting out into the Country, as the houses became further apart. We passed cornfield after cornfield.
Last year they held it in a big city. This is only my second time going. My parents sent me last year to observe how it’s done, though I could have found my mate there, they said. I felt elated when I didn’t.
The driver pulled into a long winding driveway. This isn’t anywhere I thought they would hold a dance. There were fields all around, some grass looked overgrown like it hadn’t seen a lawnmower in a few weeks. An old shed was to the left. He pulled to a stop in front of the biggest black barn I had ever seen. There were three stories connected to what looked like another barn. The property looked abandoned except for the Barns, which looked almost new.
“Here you are, Miss,” The driver pulled up outside of the double doors.
A few guys are standing at the door in Tuxedos. They were older, and I knew they were the doorman and mated. They always had the mated one’s guard outside the doors. I put on my stupid purple mask that covered my eyes and took a breath before exiting the limo. When I got out of the car, a doorman immediately approached me.
“I need to see your pack signet,” He said as he stood in front of me.
Sighing, I took out the necklace I wore that had my pack’s signet on it. It’s shaped in a crescent moon, with a single ruby gemstone in the middle. On the back of the moon is my pack’s name engraved on it, The Blue Crescent Pack. The Ruby was my birthstone. He nodded his head, then took my arm and led me inside.
They covered the place in decorations with many things to represent each pack in our State. It looked great. We had four packs in our State. Modest, compared to some States that had ten or more. I guess Oregon wasn’t all that big compared to some States, though. There was a parlor area, with a bar to my left. I remembered it for later, as it may be a great place to hide. I walked further in and looked around. There were lounges set up around the room, and the lights are dim. I didn’t see anyone dancing down here, so I figured that was on the next level. This level seemed like it was more for socialization, and I noticed many of the older pack members were in groups talking.
I wanted to look for a familiar face my age, so I headed up the steps. As I reached the top, I saw Kyle, my best guy friend, dancing with a cute little brunette girl. I guess he found his mate. I already felt nauseous, looking at all these mates. A few of my friends had already found their mates, but it was guys from the pack. He gave me a teasing wink, knowing I did not want to be here.
I noticed a small bar area, so I went and ordered a strawberry-banana smoothie. At eighteen I’m old enough in Were law to drink alcohol, but I needed a clear head tonight. If my mate was here, I had to find a way out of this. Taking my smoothie, I head towards the table when I see Melly waving her hands wildly at me. My eyes lit up, and I walked up to her. She was one of my best friends. Melly wore a flowing, black dress that accentuated her pale skin. Her hair was blonde snd tonight she had it in curls that framed her face. She was tall; she stood at five feet, nine inches, and had a slim build. Her best asset, she always said, was her boobs, but I thought she had many. Her bubbly personality is my favorite thing about her. Melly always made me laugh.
“Izzy, I have been looking for you for the past thirty minutes,” she put her hand on my shoulder as she steadied herself and caught her breath.
I imagined she was having trouble with her heels, Melly hated wearing heels. She said they hurt her feet. I was used to wearing heels.
“Can we go outside a bit? I want to take off these shoes, my feet are killing me!” She asked me.
“Sure. But let’s stay away from the main entrance.” I looped my hand in hers, and we walked towards the steps.
I didn’t want to take any chances of being near the door when my mate showed up. So far he was not here, whoever he was. I did not sense him or smell him like my mother always told me I would.
“Izzy, how long are you planning to avoid him, one day you are going to meet him, and you will fall madly in love just like the rest,” she said with a dreamy look in her eyes.
“Melly, I will not fall head over heels; I don’t want a mate. Now let’s go before I have to embarrass and break someone’s heart,” I pulled her along faster, feeling bad as she tried to hobble along with me in heels.
As I reached the bottom step, the smell hit me. It was intoxicating and seductive. Dammit, my mate was here. I looked around frantically for a place to hide. A couple of feet away, I spotted a bathroom. I hurried towards it, dragging Melly with me. Once we both are safely inside, I shut the door and sighed with relief. Now I had to figure out how to get out of here. I would just reject him if I saw him, but I was not heartless. Looking around, I noticed there were no windows to escape. Panic set in, and my face felt flushed.
“Izzy, what’s wrong?” Melly said as she removed her heels. “You about broke my ankle you know.”
“I’m sorry Melly, but he is out there, and I need a plan fast,” As I paced back and forth, trying to come up with a quick plan.
The door opened, and a woman walked in, I sighed in relief. There were a few people in here. I glanced around, suddenly worried one would be from my pack. My father would flip if he knew I was hiding in the bathroom from my mate. If I avoided my mate tonight, I could tell my father he wasn’t here. Then, after graduation, I was going to travel. He would think I was trying to find my mate. It was perfect. My father would support my traveling, especially if he thought I was looking for my mate. Maybe I could visit my Aunt’s house in Greece. I’ve always wanted to go there.
“Izzy.” I heard in my head. It was Melly. You got to love werewolf pack links at a time like this.
“What’s up? Sorry, I’m just thinking.” I replied through our link.
“Well, I wanted to make sure it’s what you really wanted, but I have something that may help you get out of here,” she said back to me as she removed a small perfume bottle from her purse.
“What is that?” I asked her back again through our link so no one could hear us.
“I have a friend who is a witch, and she made it. It will mask your scent. Just spray it all over you. She said it doesn’t have a scent so just go into the stall and spray it.”
“You know a witch? Does she go to our school?” I asked her, unsure if it would work.
“You are running out of time, any minute he could come in here looking for you, you have little choice if you really want to leave here mate less tonight,” she said.
I sighed and took the bottle; I knew she was right, besides if it didn’t work, I could always reject him. Opening up an empty stall, I went inside and locked the door. I then began spraying it all over me, making sure I covered everything, except I could not reach the back. s**t, I would have to have her spray it.
“Melly, I cannot reach the back to spray it,” I said to her through our link.
“Hurry come out, no one is out here right now.” She replied.
I flushed the toilet for good measure and went out, handing her the bottle as she sprayed the back of me. I’m was ready to get this over with. I handed her back the bottle as I did not bring a purse and we headed towards the door. Time to tell if this magic s**t would work.
We walked out of the bathroom, and I knew he was close. I tried not to look for him. No need to attract attention.
“Take my purse, my keys are inside. Don’t worry, he was there and didn’t notice you. You can use my car to leave. I hope you don’t regret this. He was very good looking.” Melly’s eyes fell on mine, her eyebrows raised, and I resisted the urge not to laugh as she gave me her best stern look.
I resisted the urge to ask what he looked like and took her purse. I hugged Melly, “Thank you, you’re the best friend ever,” Without another look back I went straight for the door and to Melly’s car.
Unknown Male Point of view:
I knew she was here, I could smell her scent, she smelled like flowers blooming on a warm spring day. Her scent was getting further away. I tried to follow it but came to a stop when I noticed a faint smell of lavender leading into the bathroom. That’s it, she must be inside. I’ll just stand here and wait for her.
It had been three years since I have been looking for her, but I was running out of time. I needed to find my mate. Year after year I attended, trying to find her. I even went to another State last year. She had been here the whole time. One by one woman came out of the bathroom, but not her. What was she doing in there, probably her makeup? I had a little sister, and she could be in the bathroom for hours, applying that s**t to her face. I never really understood it all, but that was women for you.
I was getting impatient, and her smell seemed to fade. When a woman came out, I asked, “Is anyone else is in there?” She shook her head no.
Dammit, I knew she went in there. Worried, I went in. What if something happened to her? I pushed open the door, “Is anyone in here?” I hollered.
No answer. I went and opened all the stalls empty. Dammit, where did she go? A few women were eyeing me oddly as they stood at the door wanting to come in. I would check this whole place and find her.
I mind linked my Beta, “I want you to tell the doorman no one is to leave here until I have inspected the place. My mate is missing,”
“You found her?” I could hear excitement in his voice at the thought of meeting his Luna.
“Yes, but she’s gone. Now go, immediately! I will not lose her, do you understand me?” I asked him.
“Yes, Alpha. Don’t worry we will find her, what does she look like?” He said back.
That was just it. I didn’t know; I knew she was close and followed her scent to the bathroom. I didn’t even know the color of her eyes or hair. I would find her if I had to go to every pack in this State.
