Sora woke up all warm and comfy with a small smile tugging at her lips as she stretched out her limbs, her eyes opening to be met by an unfamiliar ceiling unlike the one in her bedroom this was white and not lilac.
The night before came back to her and an involuntary blush warmed her cheeks as she thought about how Ashton had read to her and she remembered falling asleep on the couch so he probably carried her here too.
He was sweet.
Sora's gaze landed on the wall clock and she blinked twice to confirm she was seeing straight and unfortunately she was because it did indeed read twelve thirty noon.
She had slept half the morning, it was very unlike her, she usually woke up at six forty five but more importantly, her grandmother would be worried if she didn't get home as soon as possible.
She got right out of bed and changed out of Ashton's shirt into her outfit from the day before.
She headed out of the room with her stuff to find Ashton sitting on the couch using his phone.
"Hi" she greeted not knowing how else to make her presence known.
Ashton turned around and found her standing with her handbag and everything.
"Hey, you slept well" he teased slightly making her blush in embarrassment.
"I am sorry, I didn't mean to over stay like this, I didn't realise I'd slept for that long, don't worry I am gonna call and be out of here, just need the wifi password" she said explaining herself.
"It's okay, relax, I didn't mind at all and no need to call an Uber, I'll drop you off to your place" he said standing up from his place.
"I don't wanna impose"
"You're not, I have to head out anyways, it's no problem. Do you want something to eat first before heading out?" He asked.
"Oh no it's okay" she replied even though she was kind of hungry.
"Wait here, I'll fix you something, you miser breakfast and it's about lunch time" he said disregarding her response and going into the kitchen with the intention of getting her a peanut butter and jelly sandwich because that's mostly all he had.
He fixed her a sandwich and wrapped it up while she watched him.
Sora felt so spoilt. She couldn't have imagined that someone so brooding could be so sweet and caring, it was heart fluttering.
"Thank you" she said taking a hold of the sandwich as he handed it to her.
"Lets get going then"
He walked out with Sora following behind him, munching on the sandwich.
"Soooo... just to be clear, we're absolutely friends now right?" Sora asked, trying her luck as they drove back to her place.
"Yes" he simply answered making a grin spread on her face.
"So we can hangout whenever we want then right?" she asked again.
"Sure" he replied again, blatantly.
"Good" she took another bite of her sandwich with a simply smile on her face as she watched him drive.
His phone rang, cutting off the brief silence in the car.
He fetched it out with one hand from his pocket while keeping the other on the steering wheel.
"San Antonio street, third warehouse" there was no greeting, just an address to a job.
"I'll be there in thirty" Ashton said and was about to hang up but was stopped when the person in the other side spoke again.
"You alone, no other crew, not even Vincent, just you, orders from the higher ups no later than thirty minutes Hayes"
This was odd. Another job alone, without Vincent just like his last one.
"Fine" he hung up knowing there was no point in asking more, it would just land him in trouble.
The atmosphere in the car had definitely changed after the call as Ashton was brought back to his harsh reality, to the harsh reality of what he did for a living.
Even Sora understood what the call was probably about from the way his mood had darkened but she had decided not to pry, it would do no good.
She wondered why he continued to do this if he didn't like it, unless he did like it, in that it was a while different story but she doubted he did cause of the way his jaw clenched when he received the call and his mood darkened, he did not look happy about it at all.
Soon enough, they were pulling in front of her house and the car came to a halt.
Sora undid her seat belt and turned towards him.
"So I just remembered that I have a book reading done by Nicholas Carmicheal at my book cafe tomorrow at 11, will you come?" She asked.
The crease in between his brows smoothened as he looked at her big hopeful blue eyes.
"I'll try" he replied because he didn't know for certain if he'd be free, his job required him at the most uncertain of times.
"Okay, I really hope you can make it, we can have lunch together after that if you're free. Thank you for the ride and letting me stay the night" she said sincerely and leaned forward in her seat, feeling bold, she placed a small kiss to his cheek.
He gulped at her sudden action but before he could respond, she was bolting out the door.
He could see the red hue on her cheeks and ears due to her own actions.
This time he couldn't help the smile that tugged at the corner of his lips as he drove away to clean up a bloody mess.
Ashton just stood there for a moment, staring at the scene in front of him.
There were twelve dead bodies in front of him. All male, bound, gagged with clear cut bullet holes on their bodies, so many that it seemed as if someone bound them, gagged them and forced them on their knees before piercing every which part of them with bullet holes using machine guns.
For all he knew that was actually what happened.
And he was suppose to ask care of this alone. It would take long hours.
"I know it's a lot but the money is thrice of what you get paid. The boss really trusts you to let you in on this and he is making it worth your while. So you better do a spotless job" one of the men who worked for the mafia and was possibly responsible for this g******e said while resting a hand on Ashton's shoulder.
What other choice did he really have any ways.
And so Ashton put in his suit and opened the all too familiar bottle of bleach.
