Chapter 3 - Change of plans

1774 Words
Adam left Sally’s house feeling desperate. His efforts to convince Lina that he had regretted his actions had failed. He got into his car and slammed the door, punching the steering wheel angrily. He never expected Lina to find out about his cheating. Cold sweat ran down his neck, soaking his shirt. Adam cursed and wiped the sweat away. “Fuc.k. If my father-in-law finds out about my cheating he will shoot me. The man is crazy. He had warned me that if I ever made Lina unhappy he would come after me. I am sure he will do anything to strip me of my rights at the company. He is the major shareholder with the money he invested when we started and all his stocks will go to Lina in a few years. If Lina insists on divorcing me now, I won’t get the chance to transfer some assets to my name. I will be in deep trouble,” he murmured, running his fingers through his hair nervously. A message on his phone made him turn. “Baby, is everything all right?” Fu.ck. Didn’t I tell that bi.tch to disappear for a while? He thought. Picking up his phone he called his mistress. “Baby, I…” “What the fu.ck are you trying to do, Emma? Ruin me? What if Lina was here next to me?” He shouted over the phone leaving his mistress speechless for a moment. “Adam, I was worried about you,” she whispered but he was too angry to listen. “I will only say it once, Emma and you’d better listen this time. Do not call me, do not text me. Not until I get back to you, understood? Do not appear anywhere near me or my wife. I can’t afford to lose everything I built for a fling.” “A fling? Is that all I am to you Adam? A fling? Weren’t you the one who promised to divorce Lina and marry me? Didn’t you tell me that your love for your wife died long ago?” Emma screamed on the other side of the line. “Change of plans, Emma. I won’t divorce my wife even if I am no longer in love with her. Not now. I will try my best to win my wife back. I can’t afford to lose everything I’ve worked for,” he replied coldly. “You are a manipulative as.shole, Adam. Do you want to throw me in the pit with the lions all alone? I lost my job because of your empty promises, scumbag. How am I going to support my family without that money?” Emma screamed. “I may be an assh.ole but I will secure your future, Emma. I won’t leave my baby with nothing. Be patient, darling. I will remain married until I get what’s rightfully mine,” Adam cut her off. “Adam, you creep! You scared me, do you know that?” Emma cried on the phone. “Nothing changes Emma. I just have to stall my plans for a while longer. Until I am back in a safe zone.” “All I need now is for Lina to show up at the office for the deal we will sign today. That represents a sizable amount of revenue for the company, Emma. And then, I will be the one asking for a divorce, not Lina.” Adam said, a crooked smile on his face. “My God, you are ruthless, baby. I love that about you.” Emma giggled and Adam disconnected the call. “I must think of something to force Lina to join the meeting today or else I am toast.” He shook his head, desperately trying to figure out a solution. And then a wide smile appeared on his face. “I am sure she won’t dare to call and complain. Not now at least, so I may just as well try,” he whispered, dialling a foreign number. “Hello, yiayia, (grandmother in Greek). It’s Adam. How are you?” “Adam? Is everyone okay, son? Why are you calling me so early in the morning?” The old lady sounded worried. “No, grandma. Everyone is in good health. We have an appointment with that Greek businessman this morning. Can you please call Lina and remind her?” Adam bit his lower lip, knowing he was not convincing at all. “Why? What did you do to her, you brat? Is Lina angry with you? Is that why you are calling for my help?” The old lady sounded angry. “No, yiayia, I promise it’s a minor misunderstanding. You know Lina. She is overreacting as always. And now she refuses to show up for the meeting with your acquaintance. Don’t you think it will be a loss if she doesn’t show up? We have been trying so hard to become their law firm for the past three years, yiayia. It will skyrocket our firm if we manage it.” Adam closed his eyes, praying that it would work. Silence. A dead silence followed that lasted a few minutes. “I will call Lina. But if I find out that you hurt my baby, be sure I will deal with you,” came Lina’s grandmother’s cold reply and then the old lady ended the call. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ On the other side of town, the constant knocking on the door made Lucas open his eyes to find himself alone in bed. He stretched and looked around, looking for the crying beauty who had seduced him the previous night. She was gone. He jumped out of bed and put on his underwear. Barefoot, he checked the bathroom and realised he was alone in the room. Scratching his head, Lucas opened the door to find George, his cousin and secretary, waiting for him impatiently and holding a brand-new suit for him to wear. “I called, but you didn’t answer, boss. After that, I visited your room and when I didn’t find you in it, I figured you had spent the night here. I hope I didn’t disturb you,” George said, a smug smile on his face. “Don’t be an as.s, George. I am alone. Come inside,” Lucas said grumpily and returned to the bed closing his eyes feeling annoyed with the way the woman had quietly left. He felt used and abandoned, a s.ex tool. “Lucas? What’s all that money doing here?” George’s tone made Lucas turn to face him and he saw a stash of crumbled banknotes on the nightstand. Laughing, George took the money and waved it in front of Lucas’s face. “Did the lady pay you for your services, Lucas? Wow! I never thought a woman would ever see you as a paid escort!” Still laughing, George wiped the tears from his face. “Shut up, George or I will reduce your bonus for this year to minus zero,” Lucas growled, grabbing the money from his cousin’s hands and throwing it on the floor. “Ok, boss, sorry about that. It just surprised me to think the lady mistook you for a gigolo,” George apologised, afraid that he was about to lose all his benefits. However, Lucas's thoughts absorbed him so much that he didn't hear a thing George said and the latter exhaled, grateful that his boss had paid no attention to his words. Anger surged through Lucas. Who did that woman think she was to leave money for the night they had spent together? She was the one who begged him to sleep with her and he did her a favour by sleeping with her. Other women would do anything to get into bed with him. He didn’t even get her name last night, thinking they would have time for a proper introduction the following morning. For some strange reason, Lucas found the woman familiar. Her eyes made him feel like he knew her from somewhere. It was the first time in a long time that Lucas had lost control of his feelings. He gave in to his lust as he held that woman in his arms. The lady had been an unexpected wildcat in bed and had drained him physically. Lucas had lost count of the times they made love. She wanted to prove herself to him and did everything in her power to do so. Despite being tricked a few years ago, Lucas failed to adhere to his rule of not sleeping with strange women the previous night. That bi.tch was already pregnant and tried to force her child onto him after a one-night stand while Lucas was drunk. Good thing the test results revealed he was not the biological father when the baby got sick right after it was born, otherwise she would still be in his life, deceiving him with the fake paternity. That old story still pained Lucas because he grew to love the unborn baby for seven months before it was “prematurely” born. Despite never liking the baby’s mother, Lucas had planned to marry her and recognize the baby. He came from a broken home and had never met his father, so he would never abandon his biological child. “Lucas? Are you listening to me?” George’s voice brought him back to the present. “What?” George’s disturbance annoyed him. “We are meeting with the law firm Madam Angelina told us about. We must leave the hotel in two hours. The owner is her granddaughter. Do you want me to reschedule?” “No, let’s do it. In the meantime, I want you to find out everything about that woman from last night. I have something to return to her,” Lucas said, narrowing his eyes as he gazed at the money scattered on the floor. Leaving George alone in the room, Lucas went to the bathroom and came out half an hour later, dressed and ready. The cold and aloof Greek investor was back. “Let’s go,” he told George and left the room. Entering his hotel room, Lucas engrossed himself in work, forgetting everything else. George followed suit, trying to find out as much as possible about his boss’s previous night's fling. “Boss, we’d better be going if we don’t want to be late for our appointment. We have a two-hour drive.” George looked at his wristwatch and Lucas stopped typing, closing his laptop. “Bring the documents we need, George.” With that, Lucas left the room and headed for the hotel lobby.
