Alastair’s POV My angry growl reverberated in the pack house. After the attack, I was quick to react and tried to push the man away but it was no avail. The man sunk his teeth deeper into my leg. Trevon, my beta, walked in. “What the hell?” his eyes flashed angrily. He immediately took a nearby vase and hit the man on his head. “Aah” the man clutched his head in pain and left my leg. Clutching his leg, he stumbled a little. His eyes moved towards Trevon. I was quick to react. Even though the pain was too much, I managed to get up. The man’s full focus was on Trevon. Before he could attack though, he fell face flat on the floor. “You okay, Alpha?” Trevon walked towards me. I looked at my bleeding leg. “I will be,” I muttered. “Let’s go to the infirmary”. Trevon helped me walk towards the medical wing. “How the hell did he get in?” Trevon muttered once we reached the medical wing in the pack. “Dr. Sophie” Trevon called out to the doctor of our pack. She is a woman in her mid-forties. She and her family have been looking after the pack since I was a child. “Oh my god, are you alright, Alpha?” she looked worried as I sat down. She quickly cut my trousers to check on the wound. “Thankfully, it is not deep” she murmured as she started cleaning the wound and disinfecting it. “How is the situation?” I asked her while she tended to me. “Worst Alpha” she told me as she wiped the wound. I don’t need to ask how much worse it is because it is nothing new. “This time the packs teenagers and children were the ones who attacked each other”, she informed me. “I saw that. I guess there were only a few elders.” “You got that right, Alpha” she nods at me. “It's all done” she said once she had bandaged my wound. “Trevon ask someone to get the man here. I don’t want anyone else to get attacked”, I said to him. Even though the man was unconscious, we cannot take the chance of anyone getting hurt. “Sure, Alpha. I will be right back”. With that, he excused himself and went to do the work. “Make sure the wound does not get wet. If you start feeling any kind of pain in your leg, then immediately come to me”, Dr Sophie instructed me. “I will do that” I nodded at her. She sat on the chair beside the bed and let out a sigh. I let her take time to gather her thoughts. She is, after all, the doctor of this pack and has seen many of the pack members dying. “Don’t blame yourself for not saving the ones you could not”, my voice soft and firm at the same time. She gave me a nod and wiped her eyes. “There were many children who could not make it today” she whispered. I could see the emotional turmoil she was going through. This is always the case. We are helpless. As the Alpha of the pack, I don’t like it one bit. Placing my hand on her shoulder, I gave it a comforting squeeze. “You are not God with powers, Dr Sophia. You can only do so much” I muttered. She looked up at me as I continued, “you have been one of the strongest pillars of this pack.” “I wish I could do more” she murmured. “You are already doing everything” I assured her. “Dr Sophia, there are many things in our life which we have no control over. Life is not a fairy tale and roses. There will be thorns to prick us. What we do with them is up to us.” “This curse might not be a thorn but a big setback. But that’s alright as long as we never stop fighting”, I said to her with an encouraging look. “So many children were yet to live and enjoy life. They were innocent” she cried. “I know that. All of us are innocent. I promise you Dr. Sophie, I will find the cure” I said with conviction in my voice. “I hope that you succeed Alpha” she said to me. “Mom” Dr. Sophie’s daughter Chloe walked in. “Alpha” she greets me with a smile the moment she saw me. I give her a nod. “Mom, the small boy is reacting badly. He is having tremors”, she informs Dr Sophie. Dr. Sophie looked towards me. I knew what she was going to ask: “I will be alright. You go and attend your patients” she breathed a sigh of relief before following her daughter. I decided to lay down here itself as I need to keep weight off my leg. That way there won’t be any pressure on the wound. I had just laid down and closed my eyes when I heard a familiar voice. “Not even a week since I have gone and you are already injured”, I shot up and looked at Fae. “I have to be there to save your ass right” she smirked at me. I rolled my eyes at her. “Stop wasting my time. Come and heal me already”, I ordered her. “Alright, you grumpy Alpha” she muttered before walking towards me. She moved her hand on my leg where I was bitten by the pack member. A blue ray of light passed through her hand. Within seconds, my leg was healed. “Thanks” I smiled at her. “You are welcome” she nods and hugs me. “You should always be alert” she chided softly in my ear. I hugged her back. She is my closest friend whom I care deeply about. She is the fairy of this pack. No one knows it except for Dr Sophie, beta Trevon and myself. Given the situation in all the packs who are powerless, they would not be happy about it. It was better to keep it hidden. Not even my parents knew about her. When she had appeared for the first time, that was the secret she wanted me to keep. “You are late Seraphine”, Trevon walked into the room. Sera moved away and narrowed her eyes at Trevon. “You could not even protect your Alpha in my absence, Trevon”. Sera’s tone was accusing. “It is not his fault. The attack happened in my office”, I informed her. She got up and sat on the chair. Trevon was standing near the edge of the bed. “isn’t your office locked during the full moon?” she inquired with a tilt of her chin in my direction. “Someone broke in through the window of my office. He attacked me the moment I stepped inside”, I informed her. “hmm” she looked like she was in deep thought. “I need to check your office” she said to me. The three of us started walking towards the office. There were still cries in the pack. It was the after effects of the full moon. Many of the pack members who were attacked were reacting violently. Every time Dr. Sophie had to sedate them. This way, they will heal properly. We have Fae sera with us. She goes and makes a round at night when there are no prying eyes. She heals the pack members around fifty percent and lets the doctor do the rest of the work. This way there won’t be any suspicion on our pack. We reached the office. The pack member who attacked me was no longer present in the room. We were alert this time and kept an eye around so that there wouldn’t be any sudden attacks on us. Sera walked further into the room. Her footsteps were light as she surveyed every corner. She moved towards the bookshelf and we followed right behind her. My eyes moved towards the guy who looked like a teenager. He was not alive. He looked like he had been severely attacked. There was a flow of blood below his body. My fist clenched tightly as I walked away from the horrific sight. “I reckon that the guy might have stumbled here through the window to save himself. The man must have followed him and attacked the guy to no point of saving him as there was no one around”. Sera concluded the scenario that might have taken place behind closed doors. “You are right. Looking at the mess, the guy might have tried to protect himself but was not able to”, I muttered darkly. “Don’t beat yourself for a situation which is not in your control Alastair”, Sera’s voice was firm as she spoke to me. “I can’t help it” I mumbled. “After all, it is because of my ancestor’s mistakes that we are all suffering with no cure whatsoever.” There was anger, frustration and disappointment in my tone. I don’t like this feeling of helplessness. “We have finally got a break through Alastair”, Sera spoke to me. I looked up at her. “What is it?” I sensed that she might have found out something during her trip to meet the council. “Trevon, why don’t you ask the guards to take the body away?” she said to Trevon. Trevon noted the seriousness in her voice and gave her a nod “Join us once you are done”, she told him, before turning to me. “Let’s go to your room” she said to me. Both of us left the office. We reached my room five minutes later. As I don’t have my werewolf speed ability, it will take time to climb the stairs. Once we had settled down, I turned to Sera. “So, what did you find out?” there was urgency in my tone. After such a long time, there was news. I have no idea whether the news is good or bad. Whether the news would help us or not was still a question mark. “The witch that we are searching for is around. The council said that the coming days won’t be easy. The witch will not really come with us. A reason is unknown to us. We need to find out what they are.” “Are the neighboring packs aware of it?” I inquired. “As much as I have gathered, no” she shook her head at me. “Then it might be possibility that she is around but has kept her identity hidden” I stated. “That could be the possibility,” she affirmed. “From where do you think we should start?” I gave her a sideway glance just as Trevon walked in. “We can start from the city”, Sera suggested. “Fill me in, will you?” said Trevon as he took a seat. “The witch is around the neighboring packs. No one is aware of it. We should find her before the other packs do”. I filled him in on the situation. He gave me a nod and turned to Sera. “Why do you suggest that we start from the city?” he asked with a questioning look on his face. Even I wanted to know the reason. “Because she can use her powers only on human grounds. The werewolf's territory is surrounded by the curse. So that is one of the reasons she won’t be using her powers on the packlands”, she informed us. “We need to get a list of the members who go outside of the pack” I said to Trevon. “There will be many of them as there are teenagers who are attending colleges outside the pack territories. There are men and women working in the city”, Trevon said to me. “I know that, Trevon, but can you get the report this week” I asked him. He looked from me to Sera before giving a nod. “That’s settled then”. I turned to Sera. “Anything else have you found out?” I inquired. “The witch is in hiding. There is a possibility that she can be in any form” she informed us. “You mean to say she might have changed her appearance to male or any other species?” I asked her with a frown. She gave me an affirmative nod. I let out a sigh. “We will find her.” Turning to her, I said “You need to check the city with your powers. It will be easy” she was about to reply, when the door opened and Dr. Chole walked in. By the looks on her face, I knew something bad had happened. “What is it?” I asked her. “We have bad news, Alpha” I froze at those words.
