* * * Then one afternoon, the knocking was accompanied by a voice coming from the other side of the door. “Auden. It’s me, Richard. Richard Townes.” Faith hid behind the couch. I had been riding Toronado and making quite a bit of noise, laughing, and screaming, while Faith cheered me on. And though I had stopped riding as soon as Richard knocked and was standing perfectly still and silent with my pretend horse resting on the floor, it was likely he had heard the commotion coming from inside the apartment. There was more knocking and Richard’s voice was much louder. “I know you’re in there! Come to the door!” I wanted to yell, “You came all the way to Mexico to see me?” but thought he would perceive it as the beginning of a dialogue with me and encourage him to try even harder to ruin
