As Seth looked over at me with that familiar smile, I savored the warm, comforting taste of my dumpling. In that quiet moment, it felt like everything around us faded. His dark brows and black lashes framed his face so perfectly against his pale skin, and I found myself wondering how someone could look so striking.
"Why did you bleach your hair?" I asked, curiosity bubbling up inside me.
He chuckled softly, but there was something behind his eyes, something a little heavier. "I didn’t want any part of my father on me. This way, there’s no resemblance."
I smiled gently at him, wanting to take that burden off his shoulders, even just a little. "Trust me, you don’t look a thing like your dad."
That got him to laugh—light and free—and it made me giggle too, rolling my eyes playfully to cover the fact that hearing his laughter felt like sunlight breaking through the clouds.
But then, a strange prickling sensation crept over my skin. My wards. Something wasn’t right.
"Are there any other students in this building?" I asked, my voice lowering.
Seth shook his head, his expression growing serious. "No. My dad bought the whole place so I wouldn’t have any distractions."
That made me feel a little better, but still, I couldn’t shake the feeling. "Stay here," I said, standing up. "I need to check something."
He raised an eyebrow, grinning that charming grin. "Sure thing, boss lady."
I left the apartment, disguising myself with a simple spell, just blending in as another student. As I moved towards the disturbance, my heart started to pound a little faster. I ran into Kia on the stairs—my best friend, or at least, that’s what I used to think.
"Hey, Thomas!" she greeted me, clearly mistaking me for another reaper. "Did you hear Leia’s calling that human her soulmate? Can you believe it?"
I clenched my jaw but forced a smile. "I’m here for a Jack who trips. What about you?"
"Seth Lockwood," she said, far too casually for my liking. "Breaks his neck on the stairs."
I felt a surge of anger. My friend was here for Seth, and she seemed to enjoy the idea. I turned away and rushed back to the apartment, barely keeping it together.
"Seth, there’s a reaper here for you. They think you’re going to fall down the stairs and… well, die. So, stay put and let time pass, okay?"
He nodded, but something in his eyes shifted when smoke filled the room.
"What the hell?" I muttered. Flames were licking up from the kitchen. My heart slammed into my ribs as I grabbed Seth’s arm and, without thinking, teleported us both to a safe spot in a downtown alley.
Seth stumbled, wide-eyed, looking terrified and dazed. I held his face in my hands, trying to calm him. "It’s okay. The feeling will pass. Next time I teleport you, just… close your eyes."
His breathing steadied, and then he chuckled, leaning in close. "You’re incredible," he whispered, and when he kissed me, it wasn’t like anything I’d ever felt before. It was soft and sweet, but something inside me ignited, and it was like we were sharing more than just a kiss—it was something deeper.
When he pulled away, he grinned like he’d just discovered something wonderful. "That was… wow."
I blushed, my heart still racing. But then reality hit hard as I glanced over his shoulder at the thick, black smoke rising from his apartment.
"Everything I had… it’s all in there," he said, his voice heavy with loss.
Without thinking, I wrapped my arms around him, holding him close. "I’m so sorry," I whispered, hoping it would be enough to soothe even a fraction of the pain he was feeling. But then, from the corner of my eye, I saw him—Reaper Legolas, coming around the corner. A cold reminder of the danger we were still in.
"Do you want to meet my great-grandfather?" I asked, trying to think quickly. "He’s retired from reaping. Super nice, but we’ll need to bring him some human-made pastries."
Seth smirked, still trying to process everything. I called Elrond, and, as usual, he already knew. He told me to bring Seth, that he wanted to meet the human who had somehow captured the heart of a reaper princess.
I swallowed nervously. "By the way, do you know who the Angel of Death is?" I asked.
"Damon," Elrond said, and I swear, the floor dropped out from under me. I fainted on the spot. When I woke up, Seth was holding me.
"You fainted… because Damon is the Angel of Death?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
I sighed. "Yeah, and he’s more powerful than I thought." An idea sparked in my mind. I needed my brother, Alex. I called him, asking for help with binding our life forces together.
"Are you serious, sis?" Alex asked, half in disbelief.
"Yes, Alex. Seth’s my soulmate, and I need him to stay alive."
Alex sighed, but in the end, he agreed. We teleported to the dark elf tribe, and despite the eerie beauty of the place, I felt a knot of unease in my stomach. Seth looked around, awestruck, but all I could think about was keeping him safe.
Alex set up the spell, and as we sat there, chanting, I felt my soul stretch towards Seth’s, connecting us in a way that words could never fully explain.
When it was done, Alex gave us a serious look. "You’re now soul-bound. If one of you dies, so does the other. Be careful."
A reaper appeared, but I squeezed Seth’s hand. "Not this time," I said fiercely, and teleported us back downtown.
Seth smiled, relief in his eyes. "So… we need a place to stay, Mrs. Lockwood?" he teased.
I laughed, feeling lighter, even with the weight of everything looming ahead. "Yeah, Mr. Lockwood. Let’s figure this out, together."
