5: From Oil To Fire

1696 Words
Freya The night was cloaked in a velvety darkness, the full moon hanging high in the sky like a glowing beacon. It was supposed to be a night of quiet reflection, where I could finally come to terms with the turmoil that had been brewing within me. Instead, it became a night that changed everything. I could feel the pull even before I saw him—an invisible thread tugging at my very soul, drawing me toward Alpha Asher Black, the father of my child. I had always known there was something more to the bond we shared, something beyond the physical connection that had brought my baby into this world but tonight, as I stood under the full moon, I felt it for the first time, the unmistakable certainty that Asher was my mate. When I laid eyes on him, my heart raced uncontrollably. The air between us crackled with an energy that was both exhilarating and terrifying. His presence was overwhelming, and for a moment, I allowed myself to believe that perhaps, just perhaps, there was hope for us. "Asher," I whispered, my voice trembling with the weight of the truth I had just discovered. "You're my mate." The words hung in the air, charged with a significance that I knew he couldn't ignore. But instead of the acceptance I had yearned for, Asher's expression hardened, his eyes narrowing as he took a step back. "You're mistaken, Freya," he said coldly, his tone laced with an iciness that sent shivers down my spine. "I’m not your mate. And as for our night together... it never happened." His words were like a dagger to my heart, each syllable slicing through the fragile hope I had clung to. I felt the ground shift beneath me, my world unraveling as he denied the truth that I could feel so deeply in my bones. "Asher, how can you say that?" I asked, my voice breaking as I fought to hold back the tears that threatened to spill. "We were together. You know we were. And now you're telling me it meant nothing?" He turned away from me, his shoulders stiff with resolve. "It didn't mean anything, Freya," he repeated, his voice devoid of emotion. "I have chosen someone else as my mate, and you need to leave this pack immediately." The finality in his words hit me like a tidal wave, and I felt my heart shatter into a million pieces. How could he do this? How could he reject me so easily, without a second thought? My mind raced, struggling to comprehend the cruel twist of fate that had led us to this moment. “But Asher," I pleaded, my voice barely more than a whisper, "I'm carrying your child. Doesn’t that mean anything to you?" He didn't even flinch. "No, Freya. It doesn’t. This is your last chance. Leave now, or face the consequences." The coldness in his voice was like a slap to the face, and I knew then that the man I had thought I loved was gone, replaced by the ruthless Alpha who now stood before me. My heart ached with a pain that was almost unbearable, but I knew I had to protect my baby, no matter what. I turned to leave, my steps heavy with the weight of rejection and despair, when a new voice pierced the night. "Asher, darling," came the sickly sweet tone of his new Luna, a woman whose name I didn't even want to know. She appeared from the shadows, her eyes glinting with malice as she looked at me with pure disdain. "You can’t just let her go. She’s a threat to us, to our future." I froze, my blood running cold as I realized the danger I was in. Luna's gaze was fixed on me, and I could see the murderous intent in her eyes. "You need to eliminate her, Asher," she continued, her voice dripping with venom. "She’s nothing but a liability. Kill her, and be done with it." I looked at Asher, my heart pounding in my chest. Would he really do it? Would he kill me, the mother of his child, just to appease his new mate? For a moment, his eyes met mine, and I saw a flicker of something—doubt, hesitation—but it was gone as quickly as it had appeared. "Do it, Asher," Luna demanded, her voice taking on a dangerous edge. "End this once and for all." My breath caught in my throat as Asher stepped toward me, his expression unreadable. This was it. This was how it was going to end. I braced myself, closing my eyes as I waited for the inevitable. But then, something inside me snapped. I couldn’t just stand here and let this happen. I had to fight, for my life, for my baby’s life. "No," I said, my voice trembling but resolute. "I won’t let you take this from me. I will survive, and I will protect my child, no matter what." I turned and ran, the sound of my own heartbeat pounding in my ears as I fled into the night. I didn’t know where I was going, only that I had to get as far away from Asher and his new Luna as possible. The forest loomed ahead, dark and foreboding, but it was my only chance. I had to disappear, to find safety, to survive. As I ran, tears streamed down my face, mingling with the sweat and fear that coursed through me. This wasn’t how it was supposed to be. I was supposed to have a mate who loved me, who would stand by me through thick and thin. Instead, I had been rejected, cast aside like I was nothing. But I wasn’t nothing. I was a mother, and I had a life inside me that needed protecting. And no matter how much it hurt, no matter how broken I felt, I would keep going. I would survive this. I would survive him. The full moon illuminates my path, a cold, indifferent witness to my pain, and as I disappeared into the darkness of the forest, I vowed that I would find a way to protect my child from the monsters who had once been my family. I didn’t think I would ever make it out of that prison alive. The dark, damp cell had become a second skin, the cold stone walls pressing in on me, suffocating me, reminding me every second that I was nothing more than a prisoner. I had to escape. For my child, for myself. My heart raced with fear and determination as I planned my escape, knowing that one wrong move would mean death. But luck, or perhaps sheer desperation, had been on my side that night. I slipped through the guards' watch, every step feeling like a miracle. I thought I was free. For a moment, I even allowed myself to hope that I could start anew, away from all the pain and torment that had defined my life. But that hope was short-lived. I barely had time to taste the sweetness of freedom before it was ripped away from me. It was as if the universe was laughing at my foolishness, my naïveté in believing I could truly escape. They found me. Or rather, he found me. Connor Kane—the Hybrid Alpha King—descended on me like a shadow, his presence suffocating, his power overwhelming. I’d heard stories about him, whispered tales in the darkness that made even the most hardened warriors tremble. They said he was merciless, that he held grudges like a curse, and that he would stop at nothing to see his enemies suffer. And now, I was in his grasp, a prisoner once more. "You really thought you could escape, didn’t you?" His voice was like velvet wrapped around steel, soft yet deadly. I could feel the hatred in every word, the venom that dripped from his lips as he stared down at me with those cold, unforgiving eyes. "You must be more foolish than I imagined, Freya." My heart pounded in my chest as I stood before him, my body trembling with the weight of his presence. I didn’t want to show fear, I didn't want to give him the satisfaction, but it was impossible not to. "I had no choice," I whispered, my voice barely audible, as if speaking too loudly would shatter whatever fragile hold I had on my courage. "You wouldn’t understand." His laugh was cruel, a sharp sound that cut through the air like a blade. "Understand? Oh, I understand more than you think." He stepped closer, his towering form casting a long shadow over me. "Your father—both of them—have wronged me in ways you cannot even begin to comprehend. And now, I have you." His hand reached out, fingers brushing against my cheek with a gentleness that belied the malice in his eyes. "You’re going to pay for their sins, Freya. Every. Single. One." I swallowed hard, fighting the tears that threatened to spill over. I wasn’t just afraid for myself—I was terrified for my child. What kind of life could I offer them if I was bound to this man, this monster? "Please," I whispered, hating the way my voice shook. "Don’t do this. I’ll do anything. Just… spare my child." Connor’s eyes flickered for a moment, something dark and unreadable passing through them. But then his expression hardened, and I knew any hope I had was futile. "Your child? Do you think I care about your child? I will use you, Freya, until there’s nothing left. And your child—well, they’ll learn the same lessons you will. Pain. Suffering. Despair." He smiled then, a cold, twisted thing that sent chills down my spine. "Welcome to your new life. I promised I’d make it a living hell, and I always keep my promises." At that moment, I knew I was doomed. All the rumors, all the stories—they didn’t even begin to capture the darkness that was Connor Kane. And now, that darkness was mine to endure.
