“This doesn"t make s-sense.” My eyes fluttered open. Fragments of a dream demanded attention, but I ignored them, and the visions faded. A single star twinkled high in the still-dark sky. The beginnings of bird songs floated through the air. One tune started another until the forest erupted into a din of melodies and bathed me in peace and contentment, my body light, my mind at one with nature. It was the cusp of dawn and soon the rest of the sleeping world would rise. I rolled over and propped my head on my hand. A small campfire crackled. Beth sat on the other side with a blanket draped over her shoulders, her figure blurred and distorted by the heat rising from the flames.
