Matthew's POV
I walked into school and most people from my pack I walked past smiled at me. Perks of being next alpha. I opened my locker, pulling my English binder from out of it. I felt someone next to me, so I shut my locker. I jumped when I saw Jack.
"C-can I talk to you?" He whispered. I nodded, following him into the band room where the teacher usually left it open.
"What's up?" I asked, making sure all the practice rooms were empty, so we could talk.
"I'm sorry, Matthew."
"Jack, it's totally fine-"
"No, it's not. You didn't kiss me back and-"
"Jack-"
"No, don't talk. I'm so sorry. I know you couldn't possibly like me that way. We're best friends, not m-"
"Jack, let-"
"Listen to me, I know that-"
"JACK!" I yelled. He jumped, looking at me with a confused look. "Shut up for a second. I don't regret it."
"W-what?"
"I don't regret the kiss."
"But you didn't kiss me back." He said, confusion clear in his voice.
"Because I was shocked. I never expected you to kiss me."
"Why do you say it like that? Why wouldn't I kiss you?"
"I didn't know you liked me like that. I didn't know you felt the connection too."
"Connection?"
"I talked with my father last night. He told me that you can't feel the pull of your mate until your 18, but you still have feelings for your mate before you've matured fully."
"Y-you think we're mates?"
"I don't know, but I hope so."
I watched as he smiled, a light blush coming to his cheeks. "I hope so too, Matthew."
"We'll find out on my 18th birthday."
"Isn't there like an elder we can go to to see if we're mates?"
I looked up at him, shocked on his elder knowledge. "Yeah, there is."
"Well, your dad's the alpha. Wouldn't he be able to set up a time for him to tell us if we're mates or not?"
"Sure, come home with me. We'll ask."
"I can literally walk to your house from mine."
"Oh, right." I said, mentally face palming myself. He chuckled, kissing my cheek.
"Let's get to class."
Once it was time for lunch, we sat at our normal table. We sat with some of the other pack members and they usually question me about the pack.
"So any news on the pack?" Forest asked.
"No, my dads don't have any news and if they did, I'm not at liberty to say."
"That means there's going to be a pack meeting soon and there's news." Jack inferred for me.
"He's right." I said and they all chuckled.
"You two would be good together." Parker said, looking at Jack and I. I saw a blush forming on Jack's face and had to stop myself from laughing.
"Yeah, thanks, Parker." I said, making the guys chuckle again.
Jack leaned over so he was whispering to me. "So we're talking to your dads after school today?"
"If you want too, we will."
"Yes, I want to know."
"Why do you want to know so badly?" I whispered to him, noticing that the rest of the table had started a new conversation.
"I don't want to start a relationship, then be crushed when I find out we're not mates."
"We can talk about what'll happen if we're not mates if it happens, okay?"
"Okay." He said, giving me a soft smile.
We walked into my house after school, finding my parents in their bedroom. We walked through the open door, them looking up at me.
"Hey, guys, what's up?" Father asked. Jack and I sat next to each other on the bed, glancing at each other quickly.
"W-we need your help." Jack stuttered in a soft voice.
Father closed his laptop and Dad sat up. "What do you need?"
"We want to know if we're mates or not. We don't want to get into a relationship that won't last if we aren't mates."
Father looked at us with a shocked expression. "Guys, there is an elder you can go to, but he can hurt you guys. He makes you two go into each other's heads and go through a quest. You can get really hurt. I don't want to risk it. Maybe-"
"I want to risk it. I want to know." Jack whispered, cutting Father off. They were so used to each other by now that Father doesn't even get mad when he does that.
"I don't want you two to get hurt either. I think you two should just wait." Dad said.
"We can handle it." I said, taking Jack's hand. Father looked at Dad and he smiled.
"Okay, I'll set up an appointment."
We nodded and went up to my room. We sat on my bed in silence, thinking. "What if we aren't mates?"
"Let's not think about that." I whispered to him.
"But I really like you, Matthew. I don't know if I could stand not being your mate."
"We'll deal with it if that happens, okay? Just don't freak yourself out, okay?"
"C-can I sleep here tonight? It's really freaking me out." He whispered.
"Yeah, yeah, of course." I whispered.
I saw tears starting to form in his eyes, so I hugged him to myself. I rocked us back and forth as he sniffled into my shoulder, trying to keep his emotions down.
"It's okay to cry, Jack. It's a stressful situation."
My door opened and my parents stepped in. Jack pulled away from me, wiping his eyes. Dad gave us a soft smile as I took his hand in mine.
"I just talked to Elder Cherish and he can get you two in tomorrow. You're gonna have to skip school because it's like a two hour thing." Father said.
I nodded and Jack gave me a broken look. I saw more tears forming in his eyes and I wrapped my arms around him again. This time, he let his emotions go and started sobbing into my shoulder.
Dad gave us a confused look. "What's wrong?" He asked, sitting next to Jack.
"He's scared that we're not mates." I whispered. My emotions started to spiral too.
"Don't worry, Jack. I bet you two are if you both feel this way."
"But if were not-" Jack started.
"I told you not to think about that until that comes up, if it ever does."
"Right, sorry."
"Don't apologize." I whispered, stroking his hair as he laid his head on my shoulder.
"Get some sleep, guys, okay? We'll wake you up in the morning." Dad said, ruffling my hair. I nodded to them as they left, closing the door.
"Do you want to go to bed?"
"Yes, please." He whispered, his voice breaking from the crying.
"Lay down, I'll get you some water, okay?"
"Don't leave me, please." He pleaded and I could see that he was about to get emotional again, so I laid down next to him.
"I'm not leaving. Don't cry, Jack, please." I whispered, wrapping my arms around him. I kissed his forehead and he caught my lips in a kiss. Once we pulled away, he gave me a soft smile.
"Thank you." He whispered.
"Anytime, now sleep."
