Mack wound his hand around my hair and held it back while rubbing my back gently as I threw up like there was no tomorrow. I didn’t know what was wrong with me or why my body was suddenly expelling everything. It never happened to me before.
When I stopped vomiting, at least that’s what I hoped, I rested my head against the edge of the toilet and tried to catch my breath. I could feel my limbs shaking due to the lack of energy and I knew I wouldn’t be able to get up.
He continued rubbing my back and I hated how grateful I was that he was here with me. He could’ve left or stayed outside but he chose to be with me.
“I’ll just get you a wash cloth, okay?” He said, softly before he let go of me. I heard the sound of the water running before he dabbed the wash cloth on my face, making sure to clean my mouth. The cold fabric felt good, so I let him do whatever he wanted. Once he was done, he flushed the toilet and wound a strong arm around my waist and helped me stand up. I barely had the energy to cling to him, but I managed to clutch his shirt.
“I need to brush my teeth,” I mumbled, though I wasn’t sure I’d be able to walk all the way to the sink, which was only three feet away from where I stood.
I didn’t protest when he lifted me off my feet. “Wrap your legs around my waist,” he commanded and due to sheer miracle I managed to do it. The next thing I knew he was setting me on the counter next to the sink, pushing me back until my back met the wall next to the giant oval-shaped mirror. He handed me a toothbrush with a dollop of toothpaste and I wasted little time in putting it in my mouth and using whatever strength I was left with to vigorously brush every corner of my mouth. After a while I rinsed my mouth and sighed in relief.
Mack took me in his arms once again and walked back to the bedroom where he lay me down and pulled the duvet over me.
“Adan is on his way,” he said and perched on the edge of the bed.
“Why is he coming?” I asked, surprised that the words left my mouth.
“He’s a doctor. You know that, right?”
“I don’t need a doctor. I don’t even like doctors. Tell him not to come,” I said and closed my eyes.
“You feel warm and I need to make sure you’re okay,” he replied.
“I am okay.” I opened my eyes and glared at him for exactly five seconds before I closed them again. “Tell him not to come.” The knock on the door had me groaning in frustration and I pulled the duvet over my head. “Tell him to go away. I’m not letting him near me.”
I felt him leave the room only to hear voices outside. Great, so much for keeping him away. I didn’t want Adan to come here. I wasn’t lying when I said I didn’t like doctors. They gave me the creeps.
“It’s okay, I’ll just give her a thorough check up and hopefully she’ll be fine,” I heard Adan’s voice which sounded louder and closer than I’d liked. The next thing I knew Mack tugged the duvet off me, leaving me no choice but to look Adan in the eyes. “I swear I’m fine. There’s nothing wrong with me.”
He gave me a soft smile, which was supposed to put me at ease but considering he was a doctor, it only freaked me out.
“Well then you won’t mind if I check, do you?” He said before pulling out a stethoscope from his bag.
“There’s really no need for it. I told you I’m fine. I just ate something that didn’t agree with me. I’m fine now… I think,” I said but he just placed the chest piece on me. I wanted to smack him away but Mack’s presence beside me prevented me from doing so. He kept a firm hold on my hand and I knew he wouldn’t let go even if I told him to.
Adan removed the stethoscope after a couple of minutes and took a hold of my wrist. I watched him with bated breath, hoping everything was okay. I hated being sick and worse, having to deal with doctors. Why was my worst nightmare coming to life right now?
“Will she be alright?” Mack asked as Adan took my blood pressure and temperature.
Adan nodded and I released a sigh of relief. “Yes, but I think an IV drip would help her get back on her feet. I’ll go and get it from the car and then she can rest. She has a slight fever but I think its just the bad food. She’ll be fine by morning.”
He left the cottage and came back a moment later with the IV kit. “There’s really no need for that. I feel fine now,” I said but once again he ignored me and with Mack’s help got the IV drip up and running.
“I’ll give you something to help you sleep and by morning you should be okay.” He smiled and I didn’t know how or why it helped me relax. Whatever concoction he’d given me, it began working immediately and it became difficult for me to keep my eyes open. I really didn’t want to sleep with these two in the house but my body was having a hard time fighting the drug.
“The fever should break by morning. But if it doesn’t call me or bring her straight to the hospital and we’ll take it from there,” Adan said as the edges of my vision began to blur.
“What do you think could’ve caused this?” Mack asked.
“I have a hunch but I need to go and test the food in the house. Only then I’ll know for sure,” Adan said.
“Why? The food was fine. I’m alright,” Mack said.
“Still. I need to test it,” Adan said. The last thing I heard before my body lost the battle of wills was something I never thought was possible. “I need to test the food for poison.”

Hushed voices broke through the fog of oblivion keeping my mind captive. I forced my eyelids apart to see the sun streaming loud and bright through the window and the first thing I did was touch my stomach, to make sure it was okay.
“Are you sure?” This came from Mack who didn’t sound pleased.
“I had the food tested,” Adan replied. “The mushrooms were poisoned. Considering you don’t eat mushrooms, you’re okay and she wasn’t.”
“But who could’ve done that? Who made the mushrooms? I need to go and deal with the cook immediately,” Mack said on a growl as I sat up. Poisoned? The food was poisoned? Why? Why would anyone try to poison me? Were they even trying to poison me? What if they wanted to kill Mack?
“No one will accept what they’ve done, Mack,” Adan said. “We need to proceed with caution. Do you have any suspects?”
“N—no. I don’t. The staff is on rotation for this reason only, so I don’t know who it could be,” Mack replied. As much as I wanted them to continue talking so I could listen and get information, I also wanted Adan to come and remove the IV snaking out of the top of my hand.
“Vivette?” Adan said and I froze at the possibility of her attacking me. He was right to suspect her and I wanted to blame her as well but a voice in my head told me that she wasn’t the culprit. She hated me, that much was obvious, but I didn’t think she would actually kill me. She cared about Mack’s happiness and she told me she’d do whatever it took to ensure a smile on his face. So I didn’t think she was behind this. But if she didn’t poison me, then who did?
“No, it can’t be her. She’s under my control. She won’t dare do anything like this,” Mack said with a confidence that irked me for some reason. It was obvious he trusted her and I couldn’t help but wonder again why he wanted me. Trust was the basic element of any relation and he clearly had that with Vivette. So there was no point in taking me. I thought by knowing Aston I knew the Diamandis’ but I was wrong. I couldn’t make sense of Mack’s actions and that man refused to give me any answers.
“Are you sure about it?” Adan asked.
“I’ll kill her myself if she’s responsible. I’ll have a talk with her once we get back. I’ll go check on Nia.”
He entered the room and my jaw dropped at seeing the dark circles under his eyes. “You look terrible. Did you not sleep last night?”
“I’m fine, thank you,” Mack said as he sat down on the edge of the bed. I rolled my eyes as he placed a hand on my forehead.
“I feel fine now. Why is Adan still here?”
“He came to check on you, of course. She doesn’t have fever anymore.” I turned to see Adan striding over and the next few moments passed in a blur of him checking my vitals and removing the IV. He told me to take it easy the next couple of das and not to do or eat anything that would be too much for my body to handle. I wanted to tell him I wasn’t a wimp and I could handle everything but my new Master didn’t give me a chance.
“Don’t worry. I’ll keep an eye on her.”
“Good. If there’s any problem let me know. Otherwise I’ll see you at home, Delphinia,” Adan said. “I’ll see myself out.”
“Are you able to get up or do you need me to take you to the bathroom?” Mack asked. As much as I appreciated him being so kind and considerate towards me I couldn’t trust him. I couldn’t forget how cruel he could be if I said or did something to displease him.
“It’s alright, I can manage.”
“Okay. I’ll go and make breakfast for you,” he got up but I grabbed his hand before he could leave.
“Wait. Why would you make breakfast for me? I’m the slave, remember? I should be making you breakfast. I know how to prepare your favorite breakfast.” I realized a little too late that I was still holding on to his hand and by the time I pulled away, both of us knew what had happened.
“Oh I’m well aware of both our roles, little nymph.” I pressed my back against the headboard as he leaned forward. “However, right now you’re in need of me and as your Master it’s my job to take care of you. But once you’re back on your feet, rest assured you’ll have to make up for what I’m doing for you.”
“H—how?” I couldn’t believe what he was saying, but then again, I could. It wasn’t like him to do anything for free.
“That I’ll tell you. For now go and freshen up. Change your clothes and come to the dining room which is at the end of the hallway. You have fifteen minutes,” he commanded.
“I need more than that.”
“Fifteen minutes, or else I’ll come and drag you out. I won’t even care if you’re naked…” My breath hitched as he trailed a finger down my neck and came to a stop at the top of my cleavage. “In fact, it’ll be interesting to have your naked body spread out on the dining table and I can extract p*****t by having my fill of you.” He chuckled, darkly and I couldn’t even find it in myself to breathe for the fear that he would make good on his threat and extract p*****t right here. It was only when he stepped back did I finally released a breath and judging by the smirk playing on his lips he knew what was going on inside me.
I watched him walk out of the room and took a few deep breaths to calm the storm raging in my mind and body. What was wrong with me? I needed to stop his words playing on repeat in my mind. He was bluffing. He had to be. There was no way he wanted to do what he said he would. I wouldn’t let him. My boy belonged to me and I had the right to decide who got to see it and who didn’t.
No, you don’t. And you know it.
I wouldn’t let him touch me. I’d attack him if he tried to get close to me.
He’s closer to you than any man would ever be.
“You have five more minutes until I come,” Mack hollered from outside, forcing me to abandon my my solo argument and spring into action. I dashed in the bathroom and locked the door for good measure before stripping off my clothes. I quickly brushed my teeth and did my business before stepping into the shower. I wanted to be quick but my hair was a piece of work. But even then I managed to get out in record time and nearly swore out loud when I realized I’d left the clothes Mack laid out for me outside.
“s**t. s**t,” I muttered as I thought about what to do. I didn’t want Mack to see me naked. I pressed my ear to the door, hoping to hear him but when silence greeted me I softly unlocked the door and peered outside. My heart relaxed a little when I took in the empty room.
However, just as I opened the door wider and stepped out, Mack entered the room and I froze as his deep, amber eyes locked on my naked body.
