Chapter Four

-Mason's POV-  Oh my God, she is in my car right now! I am good at hiding my dumbness when I am with her but I have such a crush on her. I have, ever since I saw her for the first time back in middle school.   She is quiet and always keeps to herself. She only has one friend, Rylie. Every time I talk to her, she gives me quick responses that completely shut down a conversation but I’m not letting that happen this time. We are finally going to spend some time together thanks to my stupidity in science and I am not letting that go to waste.  She looks a bit distracted as I drive to my house but I can’t help take glances at her. I have never seen eyes like hers. They are so bright and beautiful. When she looks at me, my heart leaps.   Ok, don’t ruin this Mason. She finally is giving you the time of day... Oh god! She said yes to going to the festival with me. I can’t believe she actually finally said yes. Jesus, I have to wipe this stupid smile off of my face before I start to creep her out.  I clear my throat. “So, are you hungry?”  She looks at me confused. “You already asked me that... no.”  You i***t! I say to myself in my head.  I want to hit my face but then she’ll notice.  I smile awkwardly. “Yeah sorry, just making sure.”  She smiles and looks away.  As we drive up to my parent's mansion, she doesn’t look impressed at all, unlike most girls that come here. And no, I don’t mean I bring a lot of girls here. Mostly my ex-girlfriends or when I have a party. I am not a f**k boy. I like relationships but unfortunately, most of my relationships have ended badly.  I park and start to head to her side but she gets out before I can open the door for her. I look at her and I freeze.   God, I like her so much.  I smile and walk to the front door of the house with her following me. I go to open the door but the door swings open. My eyes go wide when I see my demonic ten-year-old little sister standing there.  “I thought you had gymnastics today after school.” My voice is strained.  She looks at me and then looks behind me at Sasha. She gives a mischievous smile and I give her a warning look.  “It was canceled...” She looks at Sasha again. “Sasha, right?” She asks.  (f**k!) Sasha nods surprised that she knows her name. My sister is like a secret spy agent. She has a way of finding out things that no one should know. Like how the hell did she find out that I had a crush on this girl. She’s been teasing me for a whole year with Sasha.  “We have stuff to do, so go away.” I say walking in.  She squints her eyes at me. “If I were you, I’d be nicer.” She mumbles but I heard her and I know that I am f****d.  “Hello dear, how was school?” My mom says walking from the living room.  I look at her and immediately can smell the booze on her.  I sigh. She started to drink earlier again.  My parents are all about keeping appearances in the public eye but at home, they are a mess.   “It was fine. This is Sasha, she’s helping me with my science class.” I say.  “Oh, that’s nice.” She gives Sasha a smile and turns back to the living room wobbling around a bit.  (We should have gone to the library instead, dammit.) I look back at Sasha and she smiles as if nothing happened. I know she noticed it. The smell was strong but she is such a nice girl that she acts like she didn’t noticed. I smile back and start walking into the kitchen with her.  “Let’s get some drinks before we start.” I say.   To my horror, we hear my sister Sophia speak. “And for the love of God, keep It down when you are up there. Your room echoes every girl’s moaning throughout the house.” I hadn’t noticed that she had followed us to the kitchen.  My eyes go wide and I want to kill her. I look at Sasha and her eyes are also wide and her face is pink.  “She’s a liar!” I shout out. “I, I don’t do that... I mean, I have but... it’s not like that... you can’t hear that from my room... I...” I'm a mess. Panicking, I point at Sophia. “She’s adopted and her family comes from a psyche ward, don’t believe anything she says!” I shout.   I am out of breath and I can feel my face heating up. Sasha stares at me and then doubles over laughing.   “Demon spawn.” I mouth out to Sophia. She gives me a wicked smile and skips out of the kitchen as if she was a sweet innocent child.  I look over at Sasha who is still laughing uncontrollably. I find it cute but I am still flustered. I scratch my head and wait for her to finish. When she does, she takes a deep breath and looks at me.   “Your sister is ruthless.”   My eyes widen and I nod. “You have no idea. She is the devil incarnate.”  She giggles.   I head to the fridge and hold a soda up. “Is this good?”   She nods and takes it. After, we head to my room. I close the door to make sure no unwanted pest enters. Especially one named Sophia but unfortunately my lock is busted because that little demon broke it trying to get in, that was two days ago when I was at school.  (Please let Alex come home soon.) I plead in my head.   If Sophia gets bored, she’ll come and bother us.  I watch as Sasha looks around the room. I am excited that she is here. Good thing I am not a slob, my room is fairly clean.   “So, what exactly are you having problems with?” She asks still looking around.  “What problems?” I ask a little dazed as I watch her.  She looks back at me. “Science?”  “Science... Oh! Yea! Yea uhm... almost everything, but that last assignment really kicked my ass.” I say.  She smiles. “Can I see it?”  “... See what?” I ask very stupidly.  She stares at me for a few seconds with an unreadable expression. “... The assignment.”  I snap out of it. “Oh! Yea!”   I am definitely living up to the stupid jock stereotype right now. I start looking through my bag pack.   (Get a f*****g grip Mason!)  I find the paper and hand it to her. She takes it and sits on my bed looking through it. I watch her and this is when I start to think that maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to have her help me with this. I am too distracted with her... I am definitely going to flunk this class.  I sit next to her and look at her. I like her curly long hair. She looks so sexy. Her skin is beautiful, it’s like this tanned caramel color.   I know I sat a little too close to her. She looks up at me and our eyes meet. My stomach goes in knots but I push it aside as we keep looking into each other's eyes.   I look at her lips and I really want to kiss them. She looks at my lips too and to me that is an invitation. I lean in and kiss her softly. She stays motionless but doesn’t back up however, the door flies open and we both jump back.  “Oh, s**t, sorry.” Alex says.   (Dammit mother fucker son of a b***h!!)   My head feels like it’s going to explode with anger.  He smiles apologetically. “Sorry bro, need to borrow one of your hockey sticks. Mine broke.”  I take a deep breath and nod. He goes to the closet and picks one of the hockey sticks and leaves but not before he gives me another apologetic look.  I take another deep breath and look at Sasha who now has moved further away from me and doesn't even look at me. She stares at the paper intently with her cheeks red.  (Dammit!)  I know the moment is lost but on a plus side, I know that she does not, not like me if that makes sense.  She stays for an hour and helps me with the paper but nothing she said stuck. I was too distracted and after that kiss, I could tell that she was flustered the whole time too.   “Rylie is here.” She says picking up her bag.  I nod and walk her out.   “Hey, you guys don’t look messy or sweaty, so I assume nothing happened.” Rylie says as we walk to the car.  “Shut up stupid!” Sasha says annoyed.   I smile and wave at Sasha.  She smiles.  “See you at school.” She says and gets in the car. I nod.   Rylie looks at me as she gets ready to drive off. “Next time, we should have a study party all four of us.” She says and I smile nodding knowing that that is a good idea.  “Maybe tomorrow. "I say but then think. "Oh no wait, I have a game tomorrow.”  “Oooh, can we come?” Rylie asks.  “Of course, that would be awesome and much more motivating.” I say with a big smile.  “Then we’ll be there... Daren will be there, right?” She asks and I laugh.  Sasha looks at her squinting her eyes. “Yea, he’s part of the team dummy. So obviously he’ll be there.”  I laugh again.   “I know, I was just asking.” Rylie mumbles. “Anyways, we can do study date the day after.”   I nod. “Yea, that’s fine.”  “Ok, see ya.” She says and drives off.   I watch as they leave and another car drives up. My dad.  Fuck, please tell me that Mr. Henry, the science teacher didn’t call him.   They have been friends since high school and Mr. Henry sometimes comes here for dinner.  “Mason, how was school?” He asks as he gets out of the car.   I watch him but he doesn't look angry so I relax. “It was fine.”  “Good, classes are going good?” He asks.  I nod and look away.   “Good. Tomorrow is your hockey game right. I’ll make it through halftime.” He says and I nod.  My dad can be... a piece of s**t sometimes. He cheated on my mom and that’s why she drinks so much now. He said it’s over with the other woman but mom can’t trust him anymore and I don’t blame her. I’d be ok if she wanted to leave him too but she doesn’t want to.   As I said, he can be a piece of s**t sometimes but he always makes time for me and my siblings. I still hate him a little though.  We start to head back inside but then someone honks their car horn. We look back and see Rachel’s car.   I groan. My dad pats my back knowing that this conversation is not going to be a pleasant one and then he walks back to the house.   I wait as Rachel gets out and walks over to me with her long brown straight hair all made up and looking overly dressed in a tight short red dress as if she’s ready for a party.  “Hey.” She says smiling. Her green eyes shine as she looks at me.  “What is it, Rachel.” I ask a little irritated. This is the eighth time in two weeks that she comes here. We broke up four months ago. I even had to change my phone number because of her.  “I just wanted to see you.” She says in a sweet voice.  I sigh. “Rachel come on. We broke up-”  “No, you broke up with me.” She says cutting me off.   I cross my arms. “Because I didn’t have any feeling for you. Did you want me to just string you along? I couldn't do that.”  “But you liked me, we dated for four months.” She says.  “And that is what dating is for. When you like a person you date and eventually fall in love if there is a connection. But there wasn’t a connection.” I say.   I do feel guilty too, I still had a crush on Sasha but she would never acknowledge me so I would try to date other girls thinking that that would make me forget her. I wasn’t trying to use them but that’s exactly how it feels and now I feel like a douche.  At first, I thought that Rachel was nice and I could fall for a girl like her but then she was too dramatic and we had nothing in common. That’s not a bad thing but when you want to be with someone, even if you don’t like what they are into, you at least try to be a part of it like I did for her and her interests. But she is too self-absorbed and I recently learned that she is a little obsessive too.  She looks away looking pissed. “Four months is not a lot of time. Give me another chance.”  “I said it before and I’ll say it again. No, sorry.” I shake my head.  She starts crying. “Please, I can make you happy. Just give me a chance.”  (f**k me.)  The waterworks always make me feel bad. I sigh and I want to hug her to comfort her but that would send mixed signals. I cross my arms tighter so I don’t give in.   “Sorry Rachel.” I say softly.  I turn around and start walking to the house.  “It’s Sasha, isn’t it.” She says.  I stop frozen in my tracks. Her voice is cold.  “That bitch.” She mumbles and walks back to her car.  (Dammit!) I know that she is going to be a problem.
