I might be a selfish, hot headed know it all but one thing I cannot stand is knowing someone poses a threat to my family’s safety.
I still cannot fathom why he would give me a black card and a ride if he knew who I was or maybe he doesn’t. Maybe it was really not him and I am just the one overthinking.
Well that’s why I’m out here, stalking in front of W company’s building and trying to decide exactly how to act when I go in. Audrey’s contact gave us a leaked information of W’s president schedule and here I am about to impersonate someone.
“Audrey, it’s really not that hard to act like a b***h. I will be fine.” I say into the phone only to hear her sigh.
“I know that.” She says softly. “I’m only worried about what you would do if our guess is true. You need to make sure you avoid a scene at all cost.”
“Definitely. Okay bye bye I’m hanging up.”
I dropped the phone, releasing a sigh as I put on sunglasses big enough to cover half of my face.
A scene? Of course I knew better than to cause one. My family’s name is already in the mud.
“Hello ma’am. How may I help you?” The receptionist smile was wide as I made my way towards her. I noticed how she took me in.
Today, I was purposely dressed in designer brands from head to toe which is usually not my thing. I was also chewing the gum in my mouth loudly.
“Don’t you recognize me?” I say as if I didn’t have half of my face covered.
She blinked twice and I huff, getting annoyed. “Employees these days are so arrogant. If you don’t want to get fired, show the way to the president’s office.”
Fear filled her eyes immediately knowing she has probably come across a psycho b***h that could cost her job.
“Do you have an appointment?”
“I wouldn’t be here if I don’t.” I decided to tone it out a little. “Kara Kriss.”
Her eyes widened in surprise once I uttered that name and she hurriedly got out from behind her desk. “I’m sorry for not recognizing you. Please this way. The president has been waiting for you.”
“Better.” I flicked my hair back, adjusted my sunglasses and followed her with a chick air around me. Inside me was a bunch of messed up nerves. I seriously wish this would go as planned and I don’t end up causing more trouble.
We took two elevators up and finally ended up in a conference room. The girl made a gesture to go in and the moment I did, she shut the door.
It was extremely quiet. I looked around the empty conference room. There was a lone chair sitting in the middle with its back to me. Whoever was on it was having a good time staring out the expanse glass windows.
“Mr. Gael?” I called, going closer then stopped when I noticed the strange smell in the air.
“Who are you?” deep husky tired voice sounded from where he sat. The little wind that flew inside from the little crack on the window scattered his hair around which was basically the only thing I could see.
And why is he asking who I am. Didn’t the receptionist say he has been waiting?
“Kara Kriss. In case you’ve forgotten we had an appointment.” I told him.
He chuckles but doesn’t turn around. “There are different kinds of people in this world. You know the one I hate most?” he drawled, leaving full three seconds of silence. “Liars.”
I swallowed hard.
He hasn’t even looked at me. How would he know I’m fake?
“Well then, I’m glad I don’t have to continue with the pretense.” I try to act like my heart is okay. Like I’m not intimidated by the way he talks.
“What are you doing here Ariel Gold?” He turns his chair around and I finally see his face. Dark wickedly carved brows caught my attention first and then straight nose and lips that pulls up into a displeased smirk the moment our eyes met.
It was him!
Shock fills me instantly.
I shouldn’t be this surprised since I already suspected it but I was anyway. He knows my name and probably every other thing about me if Avery was right about him sending that death note to Dad.
“It’s you.” I whispered.
“You still haven’t answered my question.”
Like last time, his face was stone cold and emotionless.
Now I understand why he helped a total stranger. The anger built up inside me slowly but I remind myself for the thousandth time I couldn’t cause a scene.
“I wondered who would give out a black card so easily to a stranger. Turns out it was you.”
He tilts his head, hawk like eyes staring at me like it was trying to see into my soul. His lips curved up slightly. “I didn’t know the Golden heiress would behave like a beggar.”
Oh f**k. Embarrassment covers my face instantly especially when the scene enters my mind and I realize I truly acted like one back there. Now I regret it.
“I was in a complicated situation if you didn’t check.”
“Like running away from your own wedding?”
“That’s not news.”
“Of course it’s not.” He says. “Cheating is.”
And he just had to remind me.
My fist closed as the image of that one night I try to forget came back sneaking into my mind.
“You’re very easy to hate you know?” I already want to shred him to pieces.
“I’m going to ask for the last time, what are you doing here?”
“I thought you wanted me here. Isn’t that why you gave me your card.” I snickered. “So I could come find you.”
“No.” he answers almost immediately. “I gave you the card because I could give out that much to charity.”
“I told you I’m not a beggar!”
“Oh yes. You made it pretty clear last time but that’s what most of them say.”
I gritted my teeth in annoyance before the door flew open, almost making me jump.
“I hear we have a little intruder.” An unfamiliar figure walked in. This one was tall. Handsome. If Gael was lethally handsome then this would seem kind of cute and innocent if I hadn’t seen the glaring tattoo on his half naked chest.
“Kara is currently outside and then there is another Kara inside.” He walks closer to me and I put my hands inside my bag to retrieve my Taser gun in case things gets violent here.
His gaze sweeps me up and they only get menacing the closer he got. I grip the Taser in my back tightly ready to pull it out any second. He gives me a bad vibe even though his face might look so misleading.
“Stop it, Jake. She’s mine.”
Jake stops and looked at Gael who merely tilted his head.
“What should I do with Kara then?” Jake asks and Gael looks at me. There was something in his eyes that made my heart beat differently. Like I should run now.
And what was this freaking smell in the room? Almost like… blood.
“She will do the job and I’m guessing she will do it perfectly well.” Gael says and I see Jake’s lips curl in amusement before he takes himself out and shut the door, leaving my heart thumping louder than ever.
