10 - A Moment of Happiness

2050 Words
Loading Rayne into the wheelchair there was another small pool of blood on the backseat. The nurse was patting Rayne telling her to remain calm.  She reached out for Darius’ hand and as they rushed her inside. She had to release him when they got to the doors where she was transferred to a cot and rolled in to see what was going on. Dimitri pulled in and Darius was waiting there for him. He explained they were examining her and they would be let back as soon as everything was stable and ready. Rayne had lost a decent amount of blood and her blood pressure was low. The baby’s heart rate was in distress and they were prepping her for an emergency c-section. They had Rayne set up in a room prepped and on an IV. The brothers had two seconds to see Rayne and say their piece before she was taken back. She however demanded to see them before the surgery.  The doctor was talking to her about what might happen as the brothers walked in.  “I am sorry this is for her husband only…one of you…”  Rayne sighed. “They are both my husband’s doc. I need thirty seconds please.”  The doctor looked at her and to both of them. He nodded leaving the room. The nurse was still prepping her IV line and a few other things.  “Alright you two. First get that f*****g look off your faces. Second, I will be fine and so will our child. Don’t argue like children and be patient. I am going to go bring this kid into the world and that is that.”  “But what if something happens…” Dimitri started. “Look. The only thing that is going to happen is you are going to piss me off by saying stupid s**t. Be tough. Be strong. Go get coffee and wait. I will see you after this is over and we can hold our child. Got it? Dimitri?” she waited and he smiled and nodded. “Darius?” He smiled and nodded too.  “Good deal now let’s do this.” Rayne said as they rolled her out of the room. “By the way, I love you two.” She hollered back as the door closed behind her. The nurse that heard the whole conversation with the brothers leaned into Rayne while wheeling her down the hall.  “You have your hands full there don’t you?”  Rayne nodded and smiled widely. “Yes but they are worth it. We get so many rude reactions because of our lifestyle but it really works and we are truly happy.”  The nurse, name tag Melissa – RN – Labor & Delivery, touched Rayne’s arm. “You don’t have to tell me, I am engaged to best friends. I love them both too. You aren’t alone and I am happy to have met you all.”  Rayne relaxed knowing she was in good hands.  Waiting is agony. Is all Dimitri could think. All the money in the world couldn’t solve the problem of having to wait for some things. It was annoying to Dimitri.  He looked at Darius who was just staring blankly at the television playing some sort of loving romantic comedy.  “How long has it been?” Dimitri asked. “An hour and thirty exactly.” Darius said not looking at Dimitri. “This shouldn’t be taking this long.” As Dimitri was about to speak the doctor, they saw in the room previously came walking into the waiting room. His face looked blank and unresponsive.  “Mr. Drakos?” He said addressing them both.  “Yes?” They said at the same time.  “Your wife is doing well and has been in recovery for about thirty minutes. I apologize for the delay we had another emergency arise as I walked out of your wife’s c-section.” “She will live? She is ok?” Darius asked quickly.  “Yes, she lost some blood but all her vitals are good and she did really well during the c-section.”  “And our child?” Dimitri asked a little more quiet than normal.  “Your daughter is fine. She is quiet and came in at about six pounds -eight ounces.  Good heartbeat, ten fingers and toes, quite a little fighter.” The doctor smiled and shook their hands before leaving. “Oh and the nurse will come get one of you to sit in recovery with her now. But for now you can follow me to the nursery to see your daughter.” Dimitri was teared up and Darius was in shock. A girl? Most of their family line, if not all in the last three generations had been boys. She would be the first girl in quite some time. They followed lead to the nursery and there she was quietly laying all bundled up with the name ‘Drakos’ on the end of her little bed.  The brothers hugged for a moment and just watched her intently.  “Damn she is cute.” Dimitri said softly.  “That she is brother. Your daughter is going to be such a beauty.” Darius said patting his arm.  “OUR daughter. She is …beautiful.” Dimitri teared up a bit more.  The door to the nursery opened and a nurse in purple scrubs stuck her head out. “You two must be Mr. Drakos’? If someone would like to accompany me to the recovery room, I am sure Rayne is dying to see you.”  Dimitri poked Darius’ arm. “You go. This is a you moment. I am just going to stand here and stare at our daughter and figure out how I am going to hold her and not melt or break her.” Darius laughed and followed the nurse into the recovery area. Rayne was half awake and looking quite drugged still. She was beautiful none the less.  “Darius! You won out. Did you take out your brother or something? How did he let you first here to check on me?” She giggled lightly.  “He is looking at our daughter. I think he is smitten. You scared me Rayne. I am glad you are alright.” Darius kissed her forehead.  “I am jimdandy. So excited to have been fileted on a table recently. Isn’t she beautiful? Her hair is so dark like mine was as a child.” Rayne said smiling.  Darius took a moment without speaking and ran his hand down her cheek. She looked like hell but was still the most beautiful creature he had ever known. The thought of losing her was not an option. He had suffered torture and solitude for years but seeing her face smile at him, washed it all away.  “Yes love. She is beautiful like her mother.”  “Excuse me if you can go back out into the waiting area or to the nursery, we are going to get Mrs. Drakos settled in her room.” The attending nurse said kindly.  Darius nodded and placed a long wanting kiss on Rayne’s lips. She moaned and smiled at the warmth. He held her hand for a long moment and walked out to check on his brother at the nursery.  ~~ Dimitri was in awe. For the first time in his life he was intimidated by something so much smaller than he. His daughter was so tiny and his big arms and hands overpowered her little form. The nurse found it funny how intimidated this massive man was by a baby. She had seen it time and again with new fathers but the air of confidence Dimitri gave off normally made this moment particularly amusing.  “Well I believe for the third time in my life I am humbled and tamed. You need a name little one. So dainty and beautiful. You remind me of your mother. We are both so lucky to have her.”  The little girl just lay content in his arms quietly breathing and allowing Dimitri to fawn over her entirely. His eyes kept producing small tears for the love he felt. Looking up to the window he saw Darius standing there watching. All he could do was smile at his brother and look back down at the daughter that would consume their lives and heart.  “Sir I need to get her ready to take into Momma. She is in Room 46 if you would like to meet her there.” Dimitri nodded and kissed the forehead of their daughter before reluctantly giving up his hold. Walking out of the nursery after stripping off the gown, Darius went in for a brotherly hug. The two brothers hadn’t embraced since they were children. It was a moment long coming and well worth the wait.  Heading down the hall they made it to the room Rayne was stationed. She was in the upright position and smiling, looking much more away than before.  Darius could tell she even fixed her hair in a messy bun and had applied lotion to her slightly pale face.  “Now there is a sight I needed to see. My men looking sexier than ever and smiling like they won the lottery. “  The both laughed, one after the other kissing her fully and taking seat to her side.  “Well blue eyes you did good. That little thing is so beautiful and delicate. I was afraid I would break her.”  “You got to hold her? I am glad to hear it. I can not wait to hold her. C-sections are no fun. I missed everything. I do have something to tell you both. There was a small complication during the c-section, something ruptured and they made the call to give me a partial hysterectomy. I will go into more detail later because I am not sure how to handle the fact I can not have more children but I am thankful for the two we have.” Rayne said trying not to tear up.  “My love, we have our children and you here with us. That is all that matters. While I am sure with your s****l appetite we would have had a dozen kids if not careful, better to have you here with us and no more scares like this morning. You do realize that we love you entirely and no more children isn’t even a factor, right?”  She smiled and looked to Dimitri. He rolled his eyes and laughed. “Well I guess you will do. Silly little girl. Of course that doesn’t matter. YOU are our love; you are what we need. Now. Let’s talk names. She is so beautiful…”  Before he could finish the nurse came in rolling a quietly crying little baby. Her sound was so petite, it was almost as if she wasn’t crying at all. The nurse placed the tiny baby in Rayne’s arms and she quieted immediately.  “Just hit the buzzer if you need anything Mrs. Drakos. I am just down the hall.” Rayne nodded not taking her eyes off the little miracle in her arms. Her hair was coal black just as Rayne’s had been when she was born. Her skin tone was all Drakos genetics, Mediterranean and tanned.  “So names…I have already decided.” Rayne looked at them both and watched their faces contort slightly. “Her name is Sophia Rayne Drakos. Being the first girl born for some time in the family line and hearing the beautiful nature and exquisiteness your mother portrayed, I wanted our daughter to start her life with the best name possible and I think your mother would approve.”  She had never seen so many tears of happiness and love from either of her men at once. Sure they had both had emotional moments in the past months but this was awe inspiring to watch. They elbowed each other and laughed talking about things they did as kids to their mom and how she always found out.  They remembered the way she cooked, the way she lost her temper in Greek and even the day she passed away. It was a revealing and heart wrenching twenty minutes. Their lives had come full circle and finally they both had what they needed.  Looking at Darius, Rayne offered Sophia. “You haven’t held your daughter yet. Would you like to?”  Darius looked at Dimitri for a moment and he shook his head smiling. Standing Dimitri lifted Sophia from Rayne’s arms very gently and lay her in Darius’. He looked at Rayne and then back down to the little life held in his arms. Darius kissed her forehead and just stared in disbelief.  Likely in all their lives thus far, this was the most emotionally charged and happiest moment they had spent together, all three.  Rayne knew this was going to be a lifetime to remember and the children they raised together would be fortunate to have the parents they did.
