Wake Up

“No!” Ada quickly jumped up from her sleep panting heavily. She quickly pulled up her nightgown to check if she was bleeding. Panting heavily, “It’s just a dream,” she mutters with her hand placed on her head. Suddenly there was a gentle knock at her door. She did not bother to ask who it was as she quickly made her way to the door. Opening the door, she saw one of the imperial guards standing by the door with his spear in place, “My princess!” said the guard as he took a low bow.  “What’s the matter?” she asked sternly.  “The king was brought in this morning by an old man. He is unconscious,” said the guard.  “What!” Ada exclaimed. “What happened?” she asked.  “He was found by the old man in the woods, my princess. That’s all I know,” the guard replied calmly lowering his head.  “Where is he now? Take me to my brother,” Ada said.  “Of course,” said the guard as he led the way to the king’s chamber. Walking into King Afa’s chamber, Queen Afi was seated next to the edge of the bed gazing at his son who was lying unconscious. As Ada makes her way to the bed, Kay quickly rushed in, “I came as soon as I heard what happened?” Kay said moving towards the bed.  “I am glad you are here,” Ada replied as she glances at Kay. She never wanted to look at her mother the Queen. She avoided eye contact with her and backed her. With her eyes fixed on her brother, King Afa, she gently took his hand, “He’s getting cold,” she said.  “The healer is already on the way coming,” said Queen Afi but she was rudely ignored by her daughter Ada who paid no attention to what she had to say. Not quite long, the healer walked in bearing his wooden long staff and was dressed in a white robe with a small leather bag across his shoulder. “I am glad you are here,” said Queen Afi as she quickly stood to her feet to welcome the healer.  “What’s wrong with the king?” Ada cuts in sharply with her eyes fixed on the healer. The healer moves closer to the king and places his right hand on his forehead, he slowly shuts his eyes. After a while, he releases his hand from King Afa’s forehead and glances at the Queen and the Princess. Inhaling deeply, he fixes his eyes on Queen Afi, “He was attacked by Dybbuk,” he said.  “And what is that?” Kay cuts in with curiosity. "A Dybbuk is the wandering soul of a dead person. An evil spirit or the wandering soul of a dead person and can control a living body until exorcised,” the healer narrates.  “What!" Ada exclaimed fixing her eyes on the healer. “Does it mean my brother is possessed by this Dybbuk?” she asked sternly. The name Dybbuk is new to them except for the queen who has been hearing about the creature. When the queen was a child, she has heard many travelers tell stories of Dybbuk and how the spirit preys on their victims. It is a malicious possessing spirit believed to be the dislocated soul of a dead person. It supposedly leaves the host body once it has accomplished its goal, sometimes after being exorcised. “From the look of things, the Dybbuk did not succeed in possessing the king,” the healer said.  “Then what are you talking about?” Kay cuts in.  “The Dybbuk has its fragrance inside the king and will come back to finish what it started if not handled,” the healer said. He then switches his staff to his right hand and started observing the king once more. “What are we supposed to do now?” Queen Afa.  Although she was the first to get to the king after his attack, the princess doesn't want to believe her mother was acting in good fate to see the king well. She made up her mind to keep a close eye on her mother and watch her every mood. “We need to cleanse the king and make him whole. If not we will lose the king to the land of the dead forever,” said the healer.   “What then are you waiting for? Get to work,” Ada said. This is the best part of the healer coming and this was exactly what the princess has been waiting to hear, 'the solution, not the problem.'  “I need to get the ingredients for the cleansing, my princess,” he replied.  “How much time do you need for that?” Queen Afi cuts in.  “It won’t take long if I go now,” he said.  “Very well then, do your best to come back because the king’s life depends on it,” said Queen Afi. On hearing her mother refer to her brother as king, she glances at her with a surprised look and then turned away from her. It's as if things are getting personal. She just had a dream of being killed by a creature only to wake up with her brother lying unconscious. 'Will this dream mean my brother will die? I don't understand the dream and I don't want to lose my brother.' Ada's thoughts were interrupted when Kay whispered to her. “This shouldn’t have happened if not for that maiden.”  “I don’t want to talk about the maiden ever again. I need to respect my brother’s decision as my king and a brother to me,” Ada replied.  She blamed herself for what happened. 'My brother wouldn't have gone after the maiden if I did not send her away. What if the dream I had was about him and not about me? I will never forgive myself if he ends up dead for my mistakes and interference with his affairs.'  Kay interrupted her thoughts again as she whispered to her. “At your command, I can have that maiden arrested." “This is not what my brother wants now,” Ada replied with a glance at Kay. “My brother is fighting to defeat death and we need to support him not just as our loved one but as our king. As good people of Maxis, we owe the king our life, honor, and respect. Please respect that,” Ada laments in a mean tone. As the night was drawing near, there was no sign of the healer. Ada became worried that she paces up and down in distress. “He said it wouldn’t take long,” she said.  “Give him time, he will be here soon,” said Kay.  “There is no time! We need to revive my brother!” Ada yelled.  “Yelling will not revive him, just relax,” Queen Afi cuts in. There have been in the king's chamber all day waiting for the healer to return. Ada never talked to her mother since she has been in that chamber. She ignored her mother anytime she says something to her. She couldn't keep calm as she turned towards her mother with a frowned face and lambasted her. “So your plan is to let the traitor take my brother's throne huh? No wonder you aren’t moved by this because you wanted the throne for Drew.”  She started drawing close to her mother angrily. She was ready to face her and face the consequences.  “Watch your mouth, I am still your mother and the Queen of Maxis."  “My mother is dead long ago and you are no queen of me,” Ada replied with boldness standing face to face with her mother. Suddenly the door of the king’s chamber slammed open startling them. Swiftly they all turned only to see a shadowy figure with glowing red eyes standing at the entrance of the king’s chamber.
