Her mother’s illness

1560 Words
Phillip felt chill throughout his body to see Elijah smiling like this and swallowed hard in nervousness. He pitied the girl thinking that his boss would fire her very soon. At that moment he recalled her words that she said when she came there to work for the first time ‘I need money to treat my mother’s illness. Please let me work here in her place.’ He wanted to help her, so he said “Boss, she is very good at work. Until now she is working quietly. If she made any mistake then I will warn her but don’t fire her.” Bruno’s smile faded away instantly and looked up at him in confusion, eyebrows creased slightly. ‘Why should I fire her? Here I am thinking about how to approach her and this man is babbling nonsense. Was Elijah so cruel, who used to expel anyone from the job without any reason?’ Feeling very perturbed by the thought, he glared at Phillip and snapped “Who told you that I will fire her? Don’t assume anything on your own? Go and busy yourself.” Phillip trembled a little hearing his angry tone and turning around, he left the room quickly. On the other end, Mollie Taylor received a call from her neighbor while she was cooking lunch. She heard a panicked female voice from the other end of the phone “Mollie, come to the city hospital quickly. Your mother had developed severe pain, so I bring her here. Don’t be late, OK?” “Yes… I am coming.” Mollie looked at the door of Elijah’s room in a complicated way after disconnecting the call. She wanted to go to the hospital as soon as possible but she was scared to ask for leave early. While she was pondering how to approach Elijah, she saw Phillip, coming out of the room. She hurriedly walked to him and said “Mr. Russel, my mother’s condition is not good and she has rushed to the hospital. I need to go there now.” Phillip frowned and said “Oh… then you should leave. But have you finished cooking?” “It’s almost done.” “Then finish it quickly and leave.” Mollie hesitated for a while as she thought about Elijah. She could still feel the chillness on her back recalling those deep black eyes staring at her. She asked warily “Sir will not get angry if I leave early, right?” Phillip chuckled and patting her head, he said “Don’t worry. He won’t get angry. He is not as heartless as you think. The circumstances have made him cold and ruthless. Otherwise, he is very easy to approach. Now go and don’t waste time.” Mollie nodded and went to the kitchen. After finished cooking, she headed to the hospital directly. She saw her mother lying on the sickbed in the general ward and a middle-aged woman was sitting on a stool beside the bed. She was the one who informed her about her mother, Marina Taylor. Mollie walked there and looked at her mother who was sleeping calmly. She could imagine how much pain she might have endured by seeing her pale face. The woman started saying the moment her eyes landed on her “You have arrived. I am relieved now. I was wondering why you are late.” Mollie turned her head to look at the woman and asked “Thank you aunt Ruby for bringing Mamma here. I don’t know what would have happened to Mamma if you didn’t help her.” Aunt Ruby waved her hand and laughed softly, saying “Don’t worry about it.” She abruptly stopped laughing and looking at her, she said seriously “Doctor has told me that she needs surgery as soon as possible. Her condition is getting worse.” Mollie plopped down on the sickbed hearing this. She knew that her mother needed surgery and day by day her condition was worsening. But the irony was that she couldn’t gather enough money for her surgery. Her mind was buzzing unable to find any solution. Aunt Ruby was looking at her attentively and frowned slightly to see her dazing. She called her for few times but Mollie was so engrossed in her thoughts that she didn’t hear her at all. Aunt Ruby was worried to see her like this and tapping on her thigh, she called her again “Mollie… Mollie… What are you thinking?” Mollie’s trance broke and she looked at aunt Ruby. She stood up and said “Aunt, can you stay here for a while with Mamma. I will be back soon.” She turned and left the ward as soon as she finished speaking. Aunt Ruby was dumbfounded and raising her hand, she called her “Mollie… where are you going?” But Mollie didn’t hear her and strode out of the ward. Aunt Ruby’s face turned glum and lowering her hand, she muttered “It is not like that I don’t want to stay here but you should tell me where you are going. Now when your mother wakes up and asks me where you are then what should I answer her?...” Her mumbling continued nonstop. Mollie went to the nearby bus stop and boarded a bus. Her expression was pensive and her eyes were fixed outside blankly, but some sort of excitement was there in those eyes. Nearly an hour later, she got off the bus and started walking ahead in a daze. After walking for around fifteen minutes, she reached a luxurious villa. She stood in front of the giant iron gate and stared at the villa resentfully. The guard noticed her standing outside the gate and asked arrogantly “Hey, who are you? What do you want?” But Mollie didn’t reply. She even didn’t look at him. The guard gazed her up and down disdainfully and chased her out “Go away. This is not a place to explore. Go…”  “I want to meet Mr. Carter.” She said those words robotically. “What did you say?” The guard frowned deeply and looked at her attentively. The people who came to visit Mr. Carter were either his business delegates or his friends. She looked almost Mr. Carter’s daughter Alysia’s age and whoever came to meet Alysia were all rich noble girls who wore expensive branded clothes. But this girl was wearing a simple pink t-shirt and a pair of trousers. Though this simple outfit couldn’t hide her beauty she didn’t look like a high-class noble lady that used to visit here. He never saw someone so lowly came to meet Mr. Carter before. Just as he was dawdling in his mind, he heard her saying again “I want to meet Mr. Carter. It’s urgent.” The guard was taken aback to hear her arrogant tone and got angry. He snapped “Do you have an appointment? Without an appointment, you can’t meet him.” Mollie, who was staring at the villa until now, finally, looked at the guard and said coldly “Tell him that Mollie Taylor has come to meet him. He will call me inside.” The guard's eyebrows creased and looked at her incredulously. After a while, he picked up the intercom and dialed a number. He straightened his body as soon as the call connected and said sincerely “Sir, someone called Mollie Taylor has come to meet you.” There was a long silence on the other end. When the guard didn’t get an answer, his lips curled up mockingly as he thought that his master would ask him to chase her out. Just then, he heard Brandon Carter’s cold voice “Send her in.” The call disconnected immediately. The guard was stunned and his smile faded straight away. Unwillingly, he opened the gate and let her in. Mollie didn’t delay a second to rush inside the villa. But her steps froze when she saw Brandon Carter chatting and drinking with three people, sitting on the couch in the living room. When Brandon’s eyes landed on her, his smile disappeared and his face darkened. He looked at her coldly and asked “What do you want?” “I need to talk to you.” Mollie stared at him indifferently. There was no expression on her face. Brandon didn’t want to create a scene in front of his friends. He called one of his servants and very quickly one maid came running there. Brandon commanded “Take her to the study. I will be there soon.” The maid then looked at Mollie and sneered in her mind looking at her outfit, but in front of her master, she didn’t show her emotion. She gestured to follow her and Mollie trailed her after quietly. Brandon looked at her back coldly for a while before turning back his gaze to his friends and saying “Where were we?” One of his friends laughed softly and asked “Brandon, who is this lovely girl? I have never seen her here.” Brandon’s heart sank to hear this question, but he concealed his anxiety with a fake smile and said “Oh, she is no one. I know her parents. They are very poor. I am sure that she has come to ask for money.” “Is that so?” The man again spoke. “Is she lacking money? If it is like this then let me help her.” He cleared his throat before continuing speaking “You know how lonely I have become after the death of my wife. I want to get married again but I don’t want to pick any random rich woman who only likes my money. This girl seems very pure and innocent. I will be happy If I get her.”
