Work dragged by and I was only half way through my shift. I was so distracted and annoyed. It was stupid of me really to think that I could form some sort of relationship with my step brother, let alone Liam the womaniser. Maybe I was just being too sensitive and jumping to conclusions. He could just be trying to make her feel welcome.
“Good evening, welcome to The Mariot, can I please take your surname?” I greeted a couple that looked like they were in their 50’s, rich and pretty snobby. It was the usual type of customers I served on a daily basis.
“Saunders” the man said gazing down at my bare legs.
“Ahh, yes Mr Saunders, I have your booking for 8pm and your sightly early. Could I persuade you into taking a seat in our lounge area and I would be happy to bring over some drinks for you both whilst you wait” I politely suggested and they flashed a quick smile of acceptance and I led them to a set of sofas in a different part of the building. I could feel his eyes watching my arse as I walked, I was so use to it now that I just ignored it. I kind of found it flattering that so many men found my body attractive and took it as a compliment.
“If you would like to take a seat and have a look through the drinks menu and I will return shortly to take your order” I said and handed them the menu before greeting the next customers. After finishing with the couple at the desk I took the Saunders couple’s order and returned with their glasses of Prosecco. I felt my phone buzz that I stuffed in my bra and hid behind the front desk to check it.
Liam
Elle... why are you acting so weird?
I quickly scouted around to make sure that mo one was watching and replied
Elle
I’m not, I can’t talk Liam. I’m at work.
Liam
Just talk to me. Is it about Tess?
Elle
I don’t care about Tess or what you do with her.
Liam
I’m lost. What are you talking about?
Elle
You know, displaying public affection in a coffee shop is bound to be noticed by other people.
Liam
I honestly have no idea what your talking about
Elle
Liam, your constantly flirting with her, being all touchy feely and rubbing it in my face. I don’t care anymore, just do what you want.
Liam
I wasn’t flirting with her Elle. She’s had a tough time, just like you have. I’ll admit it’s nothing like losing a father but she has had a bit of a tough upbringing and I’m trying to make her feel comfortable so she can find some new friends. Just like your mother asked me to do.
Elle
Well she seems to be extremely comfortable with you.
Liam
Your being stupid
Elle
Oh so now I’m stupid. Well I will leave you two to have your little one night stand so you can go and move on to the next damsel in distress
I was getting more and more angry with him. Defending her, over me yet again! I’m sick of being led on and then chucked aside. I’m not being his quickie anymore and I’m not falling for his charms. He will never change.
Liam
Fucking hell, I haven’t done anything wrong Elle. Your just looking at it completely wrong
Elle
Your a player Liam. Always have been and you always will be. This was a mistake.
Liam
Cheers Elle. Glad to see what you truly think of me. I’ll leave you to your assumptions because you’ve clearly made up your mind
I put my phone into my bag with force and grunted. He makes me so furious! And now I’m going to be in a s**t mood for the rest of my shift, maybe even the rest of the week!
The next customer walked in and I didn’t look up from the screen in front of me until I was half way through my usual greeting.
“Welcome to The Mariot, could I take your surna...”. A man that was roughly in his late 20s was standing there alone in front of me. He was handsome, clean shaven and tall. His hair was slicked back and had a chestnut tinge to it. I gazed up into his deep blue eyes and gawked at him.
“Hey, I don’t have a booking, I’m just here to drop something off” he explained. I was still staring at him, stunned by how gorgeous he was. He started smiling at my pathetic attempts to snap out of my gaze.
“Uh, oh... okay. What are you dropping off?” I asked.
“Well, my sister left her phone at home earlier when she left in a hurry, so I thought I would drop by after work...” he was interrupted by Annie rushing over with excitement.
“Dan!” She yelled and hugged him. This was Annie’s brother?!
“Don’t lose your head next time” he chuckled and handed her the phone.
“Ugh, your the best!” She exclaimed and he smiled.
“It was nice to meet you...”
“Elise... well, Elle” I stuttered and he pressed his lips together.
“Elle” he repeated and headed towards the exit. I was still slightly hypnotised and stood there staring at the door.
“You okay?” Annie asked and I blinked.
“Yeah, I’m fine”
My shift finally ended, but I was in two minds of going back to Annie’s or not. I didn’t want to face Liam and I certainly didn’t want to fall back into his charm. I had decided to get dropped home, but only for a short while whilst I packed some of my things. I thought that maybe some space from Liam would help me clear my head. I hopped out of Annie’s car and turned to her.
“Cheers for this, I will grab some of my things and head over to yours in about half hour” I informed and she smiled.
“No problem, but when you get to mine we are putting our pyjamas on, grabbing a glass of wine and then you’re going to talk about everything to me” she commanded and I smirked at her then closed the door.
Once I entered the house, I made my way to my room. It was fairly quiet due to it being 10:30pm. I was about to walk into my bedroom when I heard Liam talking. I couldn’t help myself but eavesdrop by his door. I placed my ear close to the frame and realised he was on the phone.
“Yeah I know... that was so funny. He completely buckled and his papers went everywhere” he laughed. He must be on the phone to one of his mates from work. I was about to walk away when I heard him say her name.
“Tess, you can come and talk to me whenever you want... your not hassling me at all it’s what I’m here for” I bit the inside of my mouth in anger.
“Just come to my office at 1pm, that’s when everyone goes to lunch. You can show me then” he continued. I could feel my mind running wild with dirty images of them two together in his office. What was he implying? And why wait until everyone goes to lunch? I went to move away from the door, the floor creaked and Liam paused to listen.
“I’ve got to go, I’ll see you tomorrow okay?” He said before hanging up. I could hear him scuffling across his bed and I creeped as quickly as I could into my room. Thankfully I made it before he knew I was listening and started packing a bag.
“Elle?” He called out and entered. He looked surprised when he saw me packing frantically.
“What are you doing?” He asked. I didn’t bother to look at him, I just wanted to get my things and go without being persuaded to stay by him.
“I’m leaving” I bluntly growled. He narrowed his eyes and replied in a more desperate tone.
“Leaving?! Why?”
“Because I need some space from here, I’m going to stay with my mate for a bit” I explained and he was silent for a moment.
“Elle, just stop”he demanded but I ignored him. He walked up to me and held my wrists gently.
“Stop!” He sternly said. I looked at him with a blank expression.
“Just talk to me and stop running away”
“I don’t want to talk to you Liam, I just want to get packed and go. I’m not going to a bar alone and getting into trouble, I’m staying with a friend”I reassured him with a slightly raised tone.
“Elle, stop this, just come and sit down” he said cupping my face. This is what I was frightened about. The way I am drawn to him, the fact I can’t resist him and the affect he has on me. It took every ounce of strength I had to move his hands away from my skin. It felt like tearing a rip into my heart, especially with the look of surprise he gave me.
I said nothing and finished grabbing a few things from my draws and brushed past him to collect some toiletries from the bathroom. He followed me and stood at the door but his body language was more stiff and aggressive.
“So that’s it then? You’re just going to f**k off to your friends house when things get difficult?” He gritted his teeth.
“You know Liam, I genuinely thought that your sister was right. That you were a kind, gentle person beneath your ‘arsehole act’ but she was wrong. It’s not an act, it’s who you are and you’ll never change. You love to flirt with women, you charm them into your bed, f**k them and then once you’re bored you move on. Your not capable of having feelings and you definitely have not got any kindness in you. It was all an act to get balls deep and then f**k off when something prettier came along” I ranted and he scowled at me.
“Fine Elle, if that’s how it’s going to be then by all means, run off to your friends house” he groaned and walked into his bedroom. I rolled my eyes and zipped up my bag. I walked upstairs and wrote my mum a note explaining where I was.
Throwing my bag onto the passenger seat, I sat in my car and took one last look at the house before I drove away and headed to Annie’s.
