Casey's POV
It was close to midnight when I decided to leave. I slipped on my jacket, grabbed my packed bag and, took the stairs down to the front door. I reached for, the handle when someone suddenly, spoke up.
“Are you leaving?” I looked over my shoulder and, found the person to be Abby. She was dressed in her PJs, sitting at the dinner table, holding a cup in her hands.
“I’m going to stay at a hotel. You made it clear that, what we had, is over.” I heard her sigh loudly before she stood up. “If it has with something I said this afternoon…” She trailed off.
“It has everything to do with this afternoon. You left me, I came here to find out why when you only treat me as if I’m an intruder.” I shook my head in disappointment. “We used to be a couple but, you are treating me as if you never knew me.” She just stared at me without saying a word. “My dad is selling the farm.” She informed me. “What?” I asked, surprised. She nodded, crossing her arms in front of her chest, and then brushed her hands up and, down her arms.
“I’m like this because of what he is doing. He is trying to sell my home-our-home. He thinks of it as a piece of land. When it means so, much to me.”
“Abby, I’m so, sorry,” I replied, dropping my bags and, taking a step towards her. She shook her head in disbelief. “I can’t worry about the farm and, still you.”
It became all clear to me, why she left me. “You found out about it, the weekend you returned home.” She nodded. “And you thought that it would be a big, pile of junk between us. So, you then made the call.” She nodded, once again. Confirming my suspicion.
“So, what you said earlier today, was a lie?” She quirked an eyebrow.
“You didn’t stop loving me.” She shook her head.
“But, we can’t be together even though it is true.” She said. She was battling to keep her emotions in line. “Abby, just give me a chance to show you that we can work this out.” She shook her head. “Just, please. Give me a second to explain myself,” I said, finally reaching her and, taking her face between my palms. “Let me show you with this free time, I have on my hands that I belong here with you. Teach me the things you know and I will prove to you that we belong together.”
She didn’t fight me, she just stood there looking at me. “And, when you realize that we can’t work it out?” She asked, drawing back, away from me. “Then, I’ll leave and never come back.” Even if it means breaking my own heart. “I’ll stop to convince you.” She nodded and then turned her face away. “Fine.” She said, turning back to me. “But, no, funny business. No, doing stuff to convince me either wise.” I nodded.
“Good, now go to bed. We have an early shift.” She said, slipping past me and making her way towards the staircase but, stopped midway. “You are going to beg me to stop. Living on a farm is not as easy as it looks.” She said before she disappeared upstairs.
All of that might be true but, I’m just smiling because I got my second chance to get her back.
I picked up my bag and made my way back to my room.
Abby wasn’t joking when she said we have an early rise. She woke me up before my alarm could go off. She was already dressed and ready for, whatever was about to go down. I met her in the stables after she has woken me up and given me some time to get dressed. We started off with the normal duties, cleaning the stables, feeding the horses and cleaning their hooves.
She then handed me a horse, already saddled up and ready to leave. We mounted our horses and made our way, away from the farm. This could have been the earliest I’ve risen out of bed but, it was worth it. To see the sun peeking out from behind the mountains. To hear the calls of the birds and, then to feel the breeze on my face.
But, one thing that truly stole my heart, was the fact that I was with Abby. Our horses walking side to side. “This is absolute, breath-taking,” I told her. “One can never get tired of this.” She replied, with a small smile. We reached the fence, and Abby was already unmounted from her horse and, digging through the bags for, supplies.
“My dad normally fixes the fence. But, his age is catching up on him.” She said handing my pliers. “Today, we are going to fix it.” I nodded and, followed her.
“Thieves?” I asked when I noticed the holes. “No, coyotes.” She answered. “They keep on coming through the fence. My dad has lost a handful of cattle.”
“Why, not. Put up a stronger fence?” I asked, looking alongside the fence. “It costs money and, I don’t know if you have noticed but, that is something we don’t have.”
“What, if I do it?” I asked. She only laughed at me, thinking that I was making a joke. “I’m serious, Abby,” I told her. She looked up from the fence and, noticed my facial expression. “Casey, I don’t think…” I held up my hand to silence her. “This is not some kind of way to convince you to give me a second chance. This is me, wanting to fix your problem.”
“There has to be a catch.” She said. I shook my head. “No, catch.”
“Fine, I’ll have a word with my father and, if he agrees. The fence is all yours.” I nodded smiling, her father will definitely approve of this.
A few hours later, we returned to the farm just in time to see that her father has brought another buyer to the farm. “Hey, guys.” Her father greeted, wanting to introduce the buyer to us but, Abby ignored him and, walked off into the house.
“This is not her home.” I heard her father, mutter. “Someone else can give her a better home.” He said, looking directly at me. “I can’t give her a home.” I began. “What person would I be, if I took her away from her home and, then expect of her to still love me?”
