Chapter 4: Invading My Place

822 Words
In the narrow hallway, he paused for a moment when he noticed me. Then, he straightened his clothes and said, "Miss Brown, I'm here to treat Camilla." Benjamin was Dylan's best friend. There was a saying that one could know if a man cared for her judging from his friends' attitude towards her. But for me, it wasn't necessary to judge from his attitude. Just by the way he addressed me, I, Lacey, seemed to always have one single title, ''Miss Brown''. What a polite yet distant way to address me! Being too sensitive to the details would only cause distress. Trying to keep myself from sinking into my thoughts, I smiled and gave way to him. "Go on in!" I said. Crying was all Camilla had to do to have the warmth and gentleness that I could never get despite all my hard work. And sometimes, I really envied her for that. In the bedroom, I found a set of clothes that Dylan had never worn. I then went down to the living room holding it in my hands. Benjamin took Camilla's body temperature and prescribed her medicine to cool her fever. His work was soon done so he was going to leave right after. When he came downstairs and saw me standing in the living room, he put on a smile meant for a stranger. "It's getting late, Miss Brown. Aren't you going to sleep yet?" "Yeah, I'll go to bed later!" I handed him the clothes in my hand and said, "Your clothes are wet and it's still raining outside. Maybe you should change into some clean ones before leaving so that you won't catch a cold." For a second there, he froze. He was probably surprised that I would give him clothes. Then, a smile spread on his handsome face as he said, "It's okay. I'll be fine!" I put the clothes in his hand and said, "Dylan has never worn these clothes. Look, even the tag is still here. Your stature is similar to his, so wear them if you don't mind!" After that, I went upstairs and walked into the bedroom. I wasn't that kind-hearted of a person. Giving him those clothes was just returning a favour. When my grandma was in the hospital, Benjamin was her surgeon. If it wasn't for the Thomson family, a world-famous doctor like him wouldn't have agreed to be in charge of my grandma's surgery. The next day. It was a brand new day after a stormy night. The air was filled with the fragrance of soil. As how I was used to, I got up early, brushed my teeth and washed my face. When I went downstairs, both Dylan and Camilla were in the kitchen. Dylan had a black apron on him. His slender figure was standing by the stove, frying eggs. His usual cold vibe was nowhere to be found. All that was left was the vibe of a cook. Camilla looked at him with her sparkling black eyes. Her cheeks were pinkish because of her high fever that had just subsided. With shades of pink on her beautiful face, she looked adorable and fascinating. "Dylan, I want my fried egg to have more burnt edges." While speaking, Camilla stuffed a strawberry into Dylan's mouth and continued, "But not too much or it will taste bitter." Dylan chewed on the strawberry and glanced at her with his pair of black eyes. Although he didn't say anything, that brief glance was clearly filled with love and care. A handsome man and a beautiful woman like them made a perfect match! A scene like this, warm and romantic, was really sweet. "Aren't they a perfect match?" A voice came from behind me. I was a little frightened. But then when I turned around, it was Benjamin. I forgot that it was raining heavily last night and that Camilla had a high fever, so Dylan wouldn't let him go back home in a situation like that. "Morning!" I said as I smiled. Then, I looked at his clothes, which were the ones I gave him last night. Noticing my gaze, he raised his eyebrows and smiled. "These clothes suit me very well. Thank you." I shook my head. "No problem!" I bought them for Dylan, but he had never bothered to lay a finger on it. Hearing our voices, Camilla called out to us, "Lacey, Benjamin, you're up. Dylan has fried eggs. Come and join us!" Her tone was like that of a hostess. I chuckled. "No, thank you. There are some bread and milk in the fridge that I bought yesterday. You've just recovered. Be sure to drink more." After all, this was a place where I had lived for two years. The real estate ownership certificate had the names of Dylan and me. No matter how weak I was, I didn't want others to claim something mine as theirs.
