Dinner together

Lord Emerson's POV The stunned look in her eyes, accompanied by her fear of me, was evident. Unable to withstand my glare, she swallowed hard and looked away. “I will take my leave,” she hurriedly said to Austin and hurried away while I watched her until she disappeared from my sight. “You just scared the young lady.” Austin grumbled and went back to his seat, while I descended the stairs and took the seat across from him. “You don’t have to be rigid with her, Emerson; she is your niece,” he said. “She's not,” I grumbled and looked away. “Well, she bears the family name; you can't take that away,” he smirked, which I found really annoying. I signaled a servant to get me a glass of wine while I relaxed on the seat. “What information have you gathered?” I asked, and he sighed and shook his head. “I think you need to be in China,” he announced, and I frowned. It hasn't been a month since I arrived in China. “Why do I need to be there?” “Our partners in China have a new CEO, and he wants to see you,” Austin explained. I sighed and took a sip of my drink. “I believe that's not the only reason you're here,” I urged, and he nodded, remaining silent for a while. After a moment of silence, he spoke, “The ship transporting container two was attacked,” he announced, and I took a deep breath. “How many were injured?” I asked, as that was the most important thing. “Two men were injured, but there was no record of deaths on our side.” I released a sigh of relief and took another sip of my drink before asking, “Was Michael responsible for it?” Austin nodded, and I clenched my fist around the glass of wine in my hand, and then I stood to my feet. As I paced around, I began to think, with so many thoughts buzzing in my head. The thoughts of killing Michael played in my head, but he was a powerful vampire, and killing him wouldn't be easy, especially given that we are fraternity brothers. “The container was saved, and it's in the warehouse,” Austin announced, and I nodded before turning to look at him. “Don’t think about that,” Austin said. Obviously, he had read my mind about wanting to kill Michael. “We are fraternity brothers, and you know it's against the rules to harm one another,” he pleaded with me, and I groaned. “This is why he is stepping on my toes and going scot-free, but I won’t let him go off this time…” I paused and took hold of my emotions before saying, “Tell our men we will attack his ships. Let him feel the wrath of my anger,” I declared, and Austin didn't object or agree; he just remained silent. While we both pondered in our thoughts, a maid walked to us and bowed. “Sir, dinner is ready.” I sighed and gestured for her to leave, then turned to Austin. “Will you have dinner with me?” I asked, but he shook his head. “Catherine is making dinner, and you know she will kill me if My stomach is filled,” he said, and I nodded, fully understanding him. “So when are you getting married to Catherine? It seems you love this one,” I teased, and Austin chuckled. “I'm waiting for you, Emerson; get married, and I will follow your steps,” he patted my shoulder, and I frowned and watched him walk away. When he left, I sat back on the couch, playing with the glass of wine in my hand, pondering in thoughts. He may have sounded it as a joke, but I knew I had to get married and raise a family. But how do I do that when I haven't found the woman my heart beats for? In order to push those thoughts from my head, I stood on my feet and walked over to the dining room. I took my normal seat at the edge of the table. As usual, the table was empty, with empty seats, as it had been for years, unless Austin or any of my s*x mates ate with me, which was occasional. For the first time in the past few years, I felt lonely. The thought of marriage and starting a family brought up a sense of loneliness in me, but I wiped it off and buried my emotions and feelings. I watched as the maids set different dishes on the table. The aroma of the dishes filled the room, but it couldn't chase away the emptiness I felt. I picked up my fork and began to eat, but each bite seemed tasteless, and I had to drop the spoon and relax my back on the seat. My thoughts went to someone I had totally forgotten. “Where is she?” I asked the maid who stood in a corner. “She is in the kitchen eating,” she responded, and I frowned. “Tell her to join me at the table,” I instructed, and the maid hurried away. A glint of guilt hit my chest. She was my sister’s daughter, and even though she wasn’t related to me by blood, it was unfair to let her eat in the kitchen. A moment later, she arrived in the dining and stood, unsure of what to do. “Don’t just stand there; sit and eat,” I instructed, and she did as told, but she sat as far away from me as she could, not that I was bothered by it. I watched her slowly fill her plate with the dishes, and then she began eating so slowly, with her face buried in her plate of food before her. By her actions, it was obvious she was scared and uncomfortable around me, and somehow I didn’t like it. “Relax, I’m just a vampire, not a beast,” she lifted her eyes away from the plate and looked at me, giving me the opportunity to hold her beautiful set of innocent sea blue eyes. As we looked into each other's eyes, I realized that her eyes were boring into my soul. For the first time in my life, I felt uncomfortable around a woman, and not just any woman, but a young lady. Unable to hold her gaze, I picked up my spoon and began eating, looking everywhere but in her direction. Occasionally, I would look her way and saw that she was eating and looking only at her plate, refusing to lift her head due to how nervous she was seated at the table with me. As I watched her eat, my thoughts went to my sister, and I wondered why she would adopt a child and keep her away from me. My relationship with my sister has been good since we were little, and we basically didn’t keep anything from each other until this mysterious adopted daughter of hers. I was curious and eager to know why she would hide her away from me, and I couldn’t wait for her to wake up and explain things to me. Moments later, she finished eating, stood up, and bowed at me. “Thanks for the meal,” she whispered, and I looked at her. I wanted to caution her about bowing to me, but I let it be. “I will clear the table….” “Let it be, that is not your duty; there are servants for that,” I said, and she gulped and nodded. She stood at the spot, unsure of what to say and do. I realized she seemed so uncomfortable, so I sighed and said, “You can go back to your room.” The moment I said that, she nodded her head and walked away while I watched her, but then my eyes fell on her ass. Gosh, she had a well-rounded behind that fit the jeans she was wearing, and I couldn't help but stare. When I realized what I was doing, I groaned and looked away, feeling disgusted at what I had just done. I took a sip of my water and left the table. With a glass of wine in my hand, I walked around the dining area, but a loud scream from Emma caught my attention, and I ran to the stairs. “Someone, help!” She screamed in fear, and my heart pounded in my chest as many thoughts raced through my head. I was worried that one of my enemies had entered the mansion and had gotten into her room, or perhaps something worse had happened. Or maybe the lights in her room had tripped off, which I knew was impossible, and that wouldn’t make her scream in such a way. With quick steps, I climbed the stairs, with my men following me behind. In a swift motion, I opened the door of her room, and my eyes widened at what I saw.
