LUNA SKYLAR POV.
I wrung my hands anxiously as I stood on the steps of the packhouse. Lycandra has been gone for hours now, but that didn’t worry me to much as she always used to go for long walks in the woods, but I was terrified now for her safety when Devon abruptly left the house without a word with warrior wolves in tow. He wasn’t answering any of my mind links and that was when my fear started to set in. I was startled out of my thoughts when Missy came running from the house with her medical bag. “Missy! What is it?” I ask as panic starts to build up from my stomach. “The alpha summoned me… there’s been an attack.” Was all she said and just as I started to run after her I halted in my steps as Devon came running out of the woods, smeared with blood, but that wasn’t what almost had my heart stopping in that moment, it was what he carried in his arms that did.
“LYCANDRA!” I screeched and I was running full out to them. Missy and I met him halfway from the woods and started crying hysterically as my daughter looked dead in his arms. “Wh-what happened? Devon?.... H-how…” I started to speak but Devon’s attention was only on his little girl so the rest of my words wouldn’t come out. He was heaving as he held onto our daughter and Missy immediately started to go to work, checking her wounds where the blood still dripped onto the grass. She grabbed padding from her case and pressed to her neck and to her shoulder as she looked almost as pale as Lycandra.
“We need to get her inside… NOW! Quickly!” She said and we all started running back to the house since it was the closest. Curious wolves who came out, parted immediately as their alpha came running into the house and he ascended the stairs to her room. There were so many questions I wanted to shout at them, but I knew it would have to wait. Lycandra needed all the medical attention that she could get, and I didn’t want to interfere with it. I shot ahead and opened her room door for them and I pulled back her covers of her bed. Devon carefully laid down our daughter and I felt hope swell in my heart when she groaned in pain in her unconscious state. Missy closed the door and had to push the both of us aside so that she could tend to her, and I wiped at the tears that was still streaming down my face.
I looked at Devon who was staring worriedly at her and I could see him also clos to tears and I only now noticed with a shock that he was naked. I quickly turned around and entered Lycandra’s bathroom and grabbed a towel and brought to him which I think he took without realising it and wrapped it around his hips. Missy was quiet as she worked, and I was getting impatient. “What happened out there Devon?” I asked and his head snapped to me. He opened his mouth to speak but no sound came out. He took a deep breath as he looked away from me and back to Lycandra. “Th-there was a rogue attack. They already had her when we arrived.” He said, his voice full of emotion. “I tried to reason with him, but he would not let her go. He… he demanded that I hand over Damon’s old pack to him as he claims that is rightfully his.” He said meeting my eyes again andi gasped as shock rippled through my body at my previous abuser’s name. “What?” Missy and I said in shocked unison, but she turned back to Lycandra as her attention was once again drawn back to her patient as she started to jerk again. Devon and I jumped in fright at the sight and Missy yelled to us to help her hold her down.
Missy was applying pressure one again with each hand on her wounds as Devon and I jumped forward to restrain her remaining limbs and a pain pierced my heart when Lycandra screamed in pain. “What the f**k is happening to her?” I screamed as her jerking lessened and she slumped back against her pillows. “She… She’s having a reaction to the bite. I have to stop the bleeding before I can give her anything for the pain.” Missy utter through clenched teeth as she still held pressure to her wounds. “Bite? What are you talking about?” I said as I wildly looked from Missy to Devon, and he bowed his head in shame. “Devon? What happened?” I asked as panic started to fill me again.
“A f-fight broke out and even though she managed to get away from him… I… I wasn’t fast enough to stop him from biting her.” He said with a voice full of remorse. “But… but… She’s not a werewolf.” I stuttered and my head snapped to Missy. “What will happen to her?” I ask and I dreaded the answer, but I had to know. Missy refused to look at me which made my heart sank, but she answered none the less. “I’m not sure. I’ve never treated a bite on a human before.” She said and finally lifted her head to meet my eyes. “All I know is that a bite from someone who isn’t your mate can be deadly and from the amount of blood that she has already lost… it’s difficult to say if she will.” She said and I broke down in hysterical sobs again and I fell against Devon’s chest as he shifted to take me into his arms.
LYCANDRA POV.
My body felt heavy, but my mind felt surprisingly clear. The burning pain in my body that felt as though my blood was on fire has also subsided and only left an aching feeling behind. I don’t know how long it’s been, but it felt like a good couple of hours or perhaps a day?, as voices came and went as well as images of Missy, my parents and my brothers and even Tracy standing over me, al having worried looks on their faces. But it was the face of Max that I saw the most when I fell asleep. Was he really my mate? A big part of me told me it was true… the way his touch made my skin shiver as tingles ran wildly over my skin, the way I felt inexplicably drawn to him that I actually got lost just looking into his eyes. Like now… just thinking about him makes my body heat up in a way that I was unfamiliar with. I mentally shook my head to clear my thoughts and I was sure that if I could actually move my head, I knew that I would be shaking it physically.
I heard a door open and close. Someone’s here again and I wished I could open my eyes to see who it was. It’s not the first-time people came in, but most of the time they kept silent as I felt them hold my hand. Other times I could make out who the person was by the perfume they wore or lotion they used, but seeing as werewolves were sensitive to smell, most of the wolves didn’t use any but, in this instance, the person smelled of disinfectant and I knew it was Missy. I felt her fiddling with the bandage on my neck where Max had marked me. Marked! No matter what the circumstances were, I knew that in the werewolf culture you had to consent to be marked and he didn’t even ask. Not that there was time for any pleasant conversations, and neither did he looked please to have me as his mate and that thought kept piercing my heart painfully and I didn’t know why. It’s not like I even liked him. He was cruel and cold, and I guessed he bit me to spite my father in the hopes that I would die. That turn of my thoughts hurt more and I felt my body physically jerk in fright when I heard a growl.
“Lycandra?” I heard Missy’s shocked voice and I could feel her hands cupping my face and turn it towards her. What the hell was that? I asked myself. As far as I could tell, it sounded feminine, but there was no one else in the room with us and if it wasn’t Dr. Missy that growled, then who was it? I felt confused as fear started to grow in my stomach. The door opened and closed again, and the steps halted. “Missy? What is it?” I heard the voice of my mom asking before her steps hurried to my other side and took hold of my hand. I heard Missy sigh and release my face. “It’s nothing… I just… I thought she made a sound but it’s just her body still trying to adjust to the bite I think.” She said and sighed again. I felt my mother’s hand tighten around mine as she brought it up to her lips and I felt her place a kiss on my fingers before taking a shaky breath.
“You know, this brings back so many bad memories of me when I was her age.” My mom said. My heart sped up at hearing this. My brothers and I knew my mom was mistreated when she was a teenager but we were never able to find out what actually happened. There was a hesitation before Missy spoke. “Yes. Unfortunately, it does, but this isn’t the same Sky.” She said. “I know, but…” My mom started to say but sighed before speaking again. “An alpha did this to her. He forcibly claimed her for h-himself.” She said and I could hear her starting to choke up with emotion. “Damon.” She said and took another breath. “Damon did a lot of horrible things, but he never marked me. Wh-what life is my daughter going to have now with being forced into a mate bond with that psychopath? I don’t even want to think about what he can do to her if… if..” My mom said and I felt my heart break at the devastation in her voice. I felt like screaming because I wanted to open my eyes and tell her I was alright, that I wasn’t forcibly marked, and that Max was my mate and I wanted to take her in my arms and comfort her more than anything.
“Don’t even think that way, Skylar.” Missy said sternly. “You know that Devon would never allow that rogue to come near her ever again. He has already tripled the guard to the grounds and there has been no sighting or sniff of them for days now.” She said and if I could, I would have gasped in shock. Days? So, it has been days that I have lying here in a coma like state even though it didn’t feel like it to me. “And neither would both your sons allow just some random guy to stake claim of their little sister.” Missy said trying to lighten the mood and I could feel that it did when my mom tried to sniffle back a snicker. “Now come on, it looks like you haven’t slept in days, and I know Lycandra would not want you neglecting yourself like this.” Missy said as I heard her leading my mom out of the room and shutting it behind them.
I was all alone again. I hated this. I wanted to wake up! I was so sick and tired of feeling helpless like this… My thoughts screamed inside of my head and I was so absorbed in my thoughts that I didn’t feel the tear that escaped my eye and rolled into my hair.
